"What? According to our assessment, your condition was already showing signs of stabilization and recovery, wasn't it?"
"The dosage has been gradually adjusted, so why has it suddenly gotten worse again?" Dr. Xu adjusted his glasses, his expression becoming serious. He gestured for Lu Mingfei to sit down and explain slowly.
The intern named Mai also stood quietly to the side with her whiteboard in hand, her gaze thoughtfully fixed on Lu Mingfei.
"Tell me, what happened? What triggered it that caused the previous symptoms to return?"
Lu Mingfei took a deep breath and organized his thoughts. He couldn't talk about time travel and war, as that would only be seen as an even more serious delusion. He needed to find a reasonable and understandable way to express himself.
"I had a very vivid nightmare last night. In the dream, I was on a battlefield of World War I. There were explosions everywhere, gunfire, and dead people everywhere."
"When I woke up, I found that I couldn't quite distinguish between reality and dreams. On the way here, a car honked its horn, and I immediately fell to the ground, thinking it was a cannonball —"
"Doctor, my body is still stuck in that dream. The slightest movement makes me tense up, and I can't help but want to attack. This feeling is more terrifying than the simple emotional outbursts and auditory hallucinations I had before. It has become an instinct for me."
Dr. Xu listened intently, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper. The nurse in linen beside him also slightly furrowed her brows; what Lu Mingfei was saying was simply too incredible.
"Lu Mingfei, what you described proves that your PTSD is already very, very severe. The nightmare content is so clear and continues to affect your behavior after waking up, which indicates that the traumatic memory is very invasive. You mentioned before that you experienced a serious accident in the Andes Mountains. It seems that the impact of that trauma on you is more profound than we initially estimated, and you may need to be hospitalized," Dr. Xu said.
"Is hospitalization absolutely necessary?" Lu Mingfei asked, frowning. He didn't want Caesar to find him in a mental hospital.
"Given your current condition, simply talking and adjusting your medication might not be enough. However, we can observe you for a while longer, and I will prescribe double the dosage," Dr. Xu continued.
"And should I stay home and control myself, or should I live a normal life?" Lu Mingfei continued to ask.
"Aren't you still in school? Just go to class as usual, and the surrounding environment will help you calm down."
"I understand, Dr. Xu. I will take my medicine on time and try to go to school normally." Lu Mingfei gave a wry smile, not expecting that he would still have to go to school.
Dr. Xu noticed the forced smile and exhaustion in Lu Mingfei's expression. He sighed. A perfectly healthy young man in the prime of his life had developed such a severe mental illness. He quickly wrote on the medical record and prescribed a new prescription, doubling the dosage from the previous one.
"Remember, if you experience any discomfort, especially if you have uncontrollable violent impulses or feel completely disconnected from reality, contact me immediately or come directly to the hospital. Your situation is very special and dangerous."
"Thank you, doctor. I'll be careful." Lu Mingfei took the prescription and got up to leave, but he could feel that the nurse named Mai was watching him, and there was something wrong with her gaze.
Lu Mingfei couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong, but his instincts told him that this woman named Mai was definitely not simple. However, he quickly shook his head and dismissed the thought. She was just an intern doctor; what could be wrong with her?
The atmosphere in the room seemed to change slightly the moment the door closed.
Dr. Xu looked at the closed door, sighed softly, took off his glasses, and rubbed his slightly swollen temples. Lu Mingfei's condition was indeed a cause for concern and worry for him.
The intern named Mai's expression immediately changed, and she turned to Dr. Xu, asking, "What exactly happened to him?"
"As you can see, it's PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder. Although his condition was severe before, with symptoms such as auditory hallucinations, nightmares, and emotional instability, it was still generally within a controllable range. Medication and psychological counseling could have some effect, but now it's beyond my capabilities," Dr. Xu said.
This woman named Mai was also a complete stranger to him; the dean had placed her here with him today and demanded that he cooperate with her unconditionally.
"To be honest, when I was pursuing my doctorate in the United States, I served as an observer and participated in a psychological counseling project for soldiers returning from the Middle East battlefields, alongside my mentor. Those soldiers had spent several years in Iraq and Afghanistan, experiencing high-intensity combat, and their PTSD symptoms were already very typical and severe," Dr. Xu continued hesitantly.
"But some of the qualities Lu Mingfei displayed today—especially his almost reflexive physical reaction to sudden threats, and the realism in his descriptions of battlefield details—made me feel that he seemed to understand the battlefield better than those veterans who had spent years in the Middle East, almost like—"
"It's as if he actually experienced the trench warfare of World War I firsthand, but how is that possible?"
After listening, Mai Shude remained silent for a moment. Dr. Xu's confusion confirmed her intuition during her observation. Lu Mingfei's abnormality could not be fully explained by mental illness.
"I understand. Let's stop here for today. I'll come back tomorrow." Mai nodded, her face expressionless.
She didn't ask any more questions or offer any explanation. She simply turned around, picked up her things, and left the department.
Dr. Xu looked at the door closing again, shook his head, and began to sort out Lu Mingfei's medical records, but a layer of doubt still lingered in his mind.
This boy named Lu Mingfei, and that mysterious intern Mai—made him feel as if he had unwittingly been drawn into the edge of a vortex far beyond his comprehension.
Meanwhile, Mai Shude had already driven a low-key but high-performance black sedan through the afternoon traffic to the most luxurious five-star hotel in Binhai City.
Instead of going through the lobby, she went directly to the presidential suite on the top floor via a private passage.
Mai Shude pushed open the heavy solid wood door of the suite, and what came into view was a wall made of high-tech monitoring equipment. Screens of all sizes were flashing, displaying real-time surveillance footage, satellite maps, and constantly scrolling encrypted data streams from various parts of Binhai City.
A woman wearing a silk nightgown, her hair loosely tied up, and holding a large bag of potato chips, was curled up in a huge leather sofa, her eyes fixed on several screens. When she heard the door open, she didn't turn around, but continued to munch on her chips and mumble indistinctly.
"Long Legs, you're back! How's that little white rabbit?"
"Little white rabbit? Potato chips, I suggest you change your name from now on. He's not a little white rabbit at all now." Mai Shude sneered.
Su Enxi finally managed to look away from the screen for a moment, still chewing on potato chips, and asked, "Oh? Our long-legged queen personally went to investigate and discovered something incredible? Tell me about it."
Mai Shude didn't beat around the bush and went straight to the point: "He said he had an incredibly vivid nightmare in which he dreamt he was on the battlefield of World War I. When he woke up, reality and the dream were severely confused. On his way to the hospital, a car horn made him take a standard battlefield prone protective action. This is not a simple PTSD symptom, and I sensed a murderous aura emanating from him. This kind of thing cannot be faked, nor can it be formed by killing a few people."
"Something must have happened to him that we don't know about. Chip Girl, have you discovered anything?"
Su Enxi put down the bag of potato chips, her lazy and teasing expression gradually fading. She sat up straight and began typing on the keyboard in front of her. Soon, the main screens switched, displaying a complex database interface, satellite images, and scanned copies of old news archives.
"World War I? Interesting, but what I've discovered here might be even more outrageous than the murderous aura you're sensing."
She zoomed in on a screen displaying a yellowed newspaper clipping, dated nearly forty years ago, with text in Spanish and a picture of the wreckage of a plane that had crashed in a snow-covered mountain, accompanied by a shocking headline.
"First of all, the Andean plane crash that Lu Mingfei once mentioned, which caused his PTSD, is real. It happened about 34 years ago. A passenger plane flying from South America to North America crashed deep in the Andes Mountains due to extreme weather and unknown mechanical failure. Most of the passengers and crew on board perished. However, according to the search and rescue team's report at the time and some sealed files later, two people of East Asian descent miraculously survived and mysteriously disappeared before the rescue team arrived."
Mai Shude's pupils contracted slightly.
Su Enxi continued, "More importantly, after digging deeper, I discovered that this air crash was not an ordinary aviation accident. It involved traces of hybrid races, and some of the subsequent cover-ups and information blockades were related to the Executive Bureau. Some of the data was also obtained from my Kassel College's encrypted database."
"Really existed? More than thirty years ago?" Mai Shude frowned.
"How could Lu Mingfei know so much? And even imagine himself as a survivor? Did he accidentally see some classified information, get triggered, and develop extremely strong empathic fantasies?"
This is the most logical explanation.
But Su Enxi shook her head, tapped the screen with her finger, and brought up another set of data and analysis reports, as well as several processed satellite images.
"No, long legs, if that were all, things would be simpler. While we were focusing on Lu Mingfei, I sent Sanwu and a few other reliable temporary workers to the Andes Mountains to conduct an on-site investigation of the theoretically forgotten crash site. Guess what? Two of them actually went there before us."
Mai Shude's movements froze instantly. She turned around abruptly and strode to Su Enxi's back.
Su Enxi typed on the keyboard, and a clearer screenshot of a surveillance camera appeared on the screen. It showed the faces of two young women at an airport in a small South American town. One of the girls had striking red hair, like flames, even in the blurry image.
"One of these two people, the one with red hair, is matched based on their passports and travel itinerary—she is Chen Motong, a freshman at Kassel College this year, with a bloodline rating of A, from the Chen family, and has a complicated background. The other is her companion, also a student at Kassel, Susie."
"Based on the scattered information collected by Sanwu and others and the vague memories of a very small number of elderly people in the area, Chen Motong was one of the survivors of the plane crash more than 30 years ago. She looks exactly the same as she did back then. Their purpose in coming to the Andes Mountains was also to find someone, to find another Easterner who came down from the Andes Mountains with her back then—that person's name was Lu Mingfei."
"Long legs, this is no accident. Chen Motong, this A-level freshman who should have been enjoying campus life at Kassel College, traveled halfway around the world to find someone who theoretically doesn't exist in her life trajectory. Moreover, she firmly believes that the other person is still alive, and—like her, experienced that plane crash more than thirty years ago, yet has retained the appearance of a teenager!"
Mai felt a chill creep up her spine. She had initially thought Lu Mingfei was just having a mental breakdown, but she never expected that something even more unbelievable was about to happen.
"Has the boss still not been reached? If this involves time, then it's not something the two of us can handle alone—"
"I'm getting a little anxious," said Mai Shude.
Su Enxi's face also showed a rare look of anxiety and helplessness. She grabbed her fluffy hair hard and said, "No!"
That damn guy has been out of contact for almost a month! He doesn't reply to emails, and there's been no response to any of our agreed-upon emergency contact methods! It's always the same; he disappears at the most crucial moment!
Although she complained about the boss, there wasn't much real worry in her tone. In their minds, the mysterious and omnipotent boss was almost a god. His safety was never an issue. However, now they needed someone to guide them through this troublesome matter.
"What do I do now?" Mai forced herself to calm down, her brain racing.
"Chen Motong and Susie have returned to Chicago and have likely reported their findings to Kassel College. Lu Mingfei's mental state is extremely unstable—we—"
Before she could finish speaking, another photo popped up on another screen. On that screen, an automated scraping program had just captured and marked a newly uploaded high-resolution scanned photo from an extremely obscure European history website that specializes in collecting rare photos and private albums from World War I.
The photo is black and white, bearing the marks of time and the roughness of the photographic technology of that era. The background is a ravaged fortress top, with cracked concrete and the smoke of battle not yet completely dissipated. A group of soldiers wearing Prussian grey uniforms, their faces showing a mixture of fatigue and excitement, are huddled together, facing the camera.
In the center of the photo, in the C position, stands a young military officer. His posture is upright, and even through the blurry image, one can feel a composure and sharpness that is inconsistent with his age.
Around his neck was a magnificent medal that stood out even in the black and white photograph; it was Prussia's highest military honor, the Order of Merit, commonly known as the Blue Max.
And the young officer's face. ————
Su Enxi froze completely, and Jiu Demai's breathing suddenly stopped. Her icy blue eyes widened to the extreme, filled with unprecedented horror and disbelief.
Although that face showed more of the fortitude honed by the battlefield than the weariness of daily life, they would never mistake it!
That's Lu Mingfei!
Below the photo is a line of handwritten Prussian text, which, after being translated, reads: "A group photo of the heroic company on the day of the fall of Doumont. The man in the center wearing the Order of Merit is Lieutenant Wilhelm Hans, the most meritorious, February 1916."
1916, World War I, Battle of Verdun, Doumont Castle.
Lu Mingfei, or rather William Hans, wearing the Blue Max Medal, stood atop the captured French fortress.
Jiude Mai and Su Enxi stood frozen in place, like two statues instantly petrified, their gazes fixed on the photograph that had traversed a century of time, yet brought a perspective that was enough to overturn their understanding of reality.
