The dream of becoming a Pokémon master
35. Goodbye, Rayquaza!
After rescuing Eevee, Kyosuke also learned that the underground base was about to self-destruct, so he naturally had to leave with Charmeleon and Mai as soon as possible.
Seeing that Kyosuke had destroyed the culture tank to rescue Eevee, the old man, who was clearly the highest-ranking officer on site, ran straight towards the secret passage without hesitation. Almost all the researchers also rushed over there to prepare for their retreat.
Although he wanted to catch up, Kyosuke knew that his Pokémon were more important.
Just as the old man and his companions were about to disappear, Kyosuke suddenly turned his head as if by telepathy, and their eyes met. Both conveyed the same message: I'll remember you.
The old man disappeared into the secret passage, and Kyosuke rushed towards the center of the Pokémon battle.
Kyosuke thought that even if Charmeleon hadn't lost its fighting ability, it would still be a tough battle with Mai, but reality gave him a pleasant surprise.
The Grimer and Zubat in the arena have lost their fighting ability, and only a few Beedrill are still struggling to hold on.
As for why it looks like this, we have to mention Kyosuke's actions just now.
At the beginning, Caterpie Dance controlled half of Team Rocket members, and with Charmeleon, it was able to fight back and forth with the remaining summoned Pokémon.
However, after the people who were tied up broke free of the silk with the help of others, the addition of another batch of reinforcements made the battle more difficult. Caterpie Dance could only use its silk-spitting ability in conjunction with Charizard's flame-breathing attack to deter others, but dared not take the initiative to attack.
The tide of battle turned with Kyosuke's first punch.
One punch caused an earthquake, startling all creatures except Kyosuke and his Pokémon. Charmeleon seized the opportunity to stand still and unleash a barrage of attacks on a fixed target, dealing massive damage.
Once the tremors subsided and Team Rocket regained their senses, they prepared to launch a counterattack with their Pokémon, only to be met with an even more intense tremor.
If the previous events were an earthquake, then what followed was a ground fissure!
Large swaths of mud were instantly wiped out, and the beaked bats, which rely on ultrasonic waves for navigation due to poor eyesight, could no longer fly normally in this confined space; some even accidentally crashed into the ground.
With such an advantage and still unable to win, Charmeleon and Caterpie Mai should really retire from the team.
Thus, the scene that Kyosuke is seeing now has come to be.
Since they had the upper hand, Kyosuke wasn't in a hurry to give orders, but instead walked toward the Team Rocket members standing to the side.
Now there isn't a clean spot on their bodies, either with remnants of insect silk, burns from flames, or the smell of burning protein.
"Aren't you going to retreat?" Kyosuke couldn't help but ask, seeing their calm expressions.
"We can't retreat," one person answered, his voice low and somber. Though he seemed nonchalant, in the final moments of his life, he couldn't help but feel despair.
"Why? What happened to that passage?" Kyosuke was a little dumbfounded. He thought the other party had a way out, which was why he was sitting here so calmly.
"The secret passage will definitely be destroyed; that's the organization's rule," another person replied. At this point, people actually became more talkative.
"But your organization always abandons you, doesn't it?" Kyosuke couldn't understand what was so good about such an organization.
"You're too young to understand." Kyosuke punched the new person who answered the phone on the head, and the person immediately passed out.
A silence fell over the room.
"Where are your families?" Kyosuke suddenly asked.
"I have no family." "They..." "The organization will take care of them." "Yes, our friends in the organization will also take care of our families." "Our organization's benefits are much better than those so-called alliances!" "Yeah, we don't care about those alliances!" "Exactly!"
The conversation veered off-topic, and suddenly a group of people started chattering amongst themselves.
However, Kyosuke also understood why the Rockets were so attractive, and what their general goals were.
At this point, Charmeleon and Mai had dealt with the other Pokémon and returned to Kyosuke's side.
Kyosuke knew it was time for him to leave too. Looking at this group of pitiful people, he finally couldn't help but ask, "Are you really not leaving?"
The group of people chuckled. Despite being burly men and members of an evil organization dressed in ugly uniforms, their laughter wasn't offensive.
"That's settled then. If you're going to leave, then leave now."
"We've done so much evil that we never thought we'd have a good outcome."
"Yes, this ending is already pretty good for us."
Knowing their determination, Kyosuke said no more. He needed to find a way out and didn't have time to waste with them any longer.
Searching around for any possible hidden doors, and checking the tightly sealed entrances and secret passages, Kyosuke felt a sense of despair.
Standing where the incubation tank had been, feeling the ground and the steel plate on top shaking more and more violently, Kyosuke suddenly realized that he might have misunderstood his location.
Previously, we went down about ten meters underground, and this experimental base was about seven meters high. The destruction of the incubation tank caused the entire base to collapse, which means that the area above us was not as solid and thick as we had imagined. The steel plates used to build it were only better than ordinary materials, not some top-grade material.
That being the case...
"Mid-fire, unleash your full power Flamethrower on this area above your head!" Kyosuke commanded Charizard.
Knowing the situation was urgent, Charmeleon didn't say much and unleashed its maximum flame output upwards.
However, while a horizontal jet can produce flames up to ten meters high, it can only reach five meters upwards, and it only has a heating effect on steel plates.
Kyosuke knew he might be going to die here, but looking at the Charmeleon still breathing fire and the Caterpie pacing anxiously beside him, he couldn't bring himself to say anything to blame it.
They've already done a great job, going through a major battle and dealing with the aftermath. It's just that I, as a trainer, haven't done enough.
It seems those two agreements can't be kept.
"Mid-fire, that's enough." Kyosuke said with a smile to Charmeleon, holding Eevee in one bloody hand and taking out two Poké Balls with the other. "From now on, you'll have to practice your moves properly." He was about to recall him and Mai.
A wisp of silk stopped him, binding his hand to two Poké Balls and a rock.
Kyosuke subconsciously looked at his hand; it was an unchanging stone.
"Mai! You..." Kyosuke looked at Mai in shock, but her body had now turned into a white light...
Finally, a five-meter-long Butterfly appeared.
"So it wasn't Rayquaza after all... Mai did her best, but it's all because of me..." Kyosuke blamed himself for his weakness. As a trainer, he didn't even have the ability to protect his Pokémon and help it evolve into the form he wanted!
But seeing Mai flapping her wings and flying freely in the air, Kyosuke felt relieved. No matter what form she takes, even if she's not a legendary Pokémon, as long as he likes his own Pokémon, that's all that matters!
