Chapter 12 Boss, you're amazing!
"Oh my god, boss, look what this is!"
Pete was the first to spot the half-meter-long carp.
He searched the boat for a harpoon, but unfortunately, he hadn't brought any fishing gear with him in his haste to leave.
This fish is so big, if we catch it, it'll be enough to eat for several days.
That's clearly what Pete was thinking.
He then discovered that the carp was not afraid of people. After rising to the surface, it kept circling around Shen Fei, its bluish-black back appearing and disappearing on the water's surface, unwilling to leave.
Shen Fei was carrying two oak boxes. Because he was leaning against the edge of the boat and Pete's attention was focused on the carp, no one noticed anything unusual about him.
Shen Fei's eyes darted around. There was a high chance that these two boxes contained valuable treasures, and it would be best if only he knew about them.
He quietly untied the rope from his back, then attached it to the chains of the two boxes. He took off his diving suit and threw it into the cabin. Only after doing all this did his attention return to the carp.
"Hey!"
Shen Fei waved his hand, secretly communicating with the carp through his mind, "Buddy, we need to part ways. There are no natural enemies of yours here, go find some food!"
Shen Fei patted the fish's back with his hand, and without getting on the boat, ordered Pete to start the small boat.
He hid in the water, clinging to the edge of the boat with both hands, secretly watching the two oak crates below the rope.
After receiving Shen Fei's command, the half-meter-long carp lingered, flicked its tail a few times, circled Shen Fei a few more times, and then quickly sank into the lake and disappeared.
Pete, however, seemed somewhat reluctant to leave, rowing and sighing with emotion.
"Boss, that's amazing! That carp doesn't seem afraid of you. Do you Easterners all have this kind of magical witchcraft? Ability to communicate with animals?"
Shen Fei shrugged.
Neither admitting nor denying.
"Otherwise, why would my grandfather have chosen me to inherit the Great Sage Fish Farm?"
After being integrated with the Heart of the Ocean, this magical phenomenon would recur from time to time, which pleased Shen Fei as he made the other party associate it with magical witchcraft.
As for why Shen Fei stayed in the water and didn't board the boat, Shen Fei explained that he was just getting familiar with the water today, and he would continue to check the netting later, but that was Pete's task.
Pete readily accepted.
He was worried that if he had a high monthly salary but nothing to do, it meant he was not far from being unemployed.
As long as there's work to do, I'll continue doing this high-paying job.
The two chatted as they went, and soon arrived at the shore.
"Pete, go tell James to prepare some ginger soup and check if lunch is ready."
"Okay, boss."
Pete had no doubts; his mind was still preoccupied with the magical scene he had just witnessed. He figured that after work tonight, the rumors that Shen Fei possessed magical powers and could communicate with carp would soon spread throughout his little family.
While Pete was away, Shen Fei hid the two oak boxes under some water plants nearby.
After packing up his diving suit and securing the small boat, he returned to the manor.
A sumptuous Chinese meal was already laid out on the table.
Shen Fei glanced at the food and saw a plate of shredded pork with green peppers, a plate of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, a piece of fried fish, and a large bowl of rice noodles with shredded pork.
These were all things Smith bought for him from the supermarket before he left yesterday.
As for green vegetables, I was in a rush today and didn't see any.
In addition to three dishes and a soup, there were also two large cups of thick ginger soup, which was pitch black in color and contained some cola.
Cola with ginger soup is a perfect way to ward off the cold.
One of the cups was already empty, presumably because Pete had already eaten some.
Shen Fei didn't stand on ceremony and drank the full cup of ginger soup in one gulp. Soon, a warm current surged through his body, dispelling the chill he had felt while soaking in the water.
In the bathroom on the first floor, Pete was humming a song while taking a shower.
Shen Fei went straight to the master bedroom on the second floor, took a refreshing hot shower, changed into a clean set of clothes, and when he came to the living room on the first floor, Pete was sitting nervously at the dining table, while James stood quietly to the side like a waiter.
Pete stood up somewhat uneasily. "Boss, thank you for your hospitality. I haven't had Chinese food in a long time."
Shen Fei smiled slightly, "Eating your fill doesn't preclude us from working, so don't be shy, let's eat!"
Then he glanced at James beside him and said, "Uncle James, why don't you join us at the table?"
The latter shook his head repeatedly, "I'll eat after you've finished eating, don't worry about me. By the way, boss, I've already contacted the housekeepers, they'll be over this afternoon."
"You handle these things as you see fit!"
Shen Fei didn't force the other person to sit at the table and eat with him, because the customs and traditions of China and Canada are very different. You might think that this shows your approachable manner, but others might not think so and instead feel that you are making things difficult for them.
This sense of hierarchy exists everywhere.
As for why Pitt was allowed to sit at the table, it may be related to his status.
James is the butler and must follow the rules. There is a red line between him and his master, and he should try not to cross it. Pete, on the other hand, is an employee. In order to please his employee and hope that he will work hard, the boss often offers small favors such as meals together.
Shen Fei first ladled himself a bowl of shredded pork soup, took a sip, and found the flavor to be rich. The shredded pork and vermicelli were stewed until very tender. As for the taste, it was just passable and not exactly delicious. However, the portion sizes were generous, and the style was somewhat like a combination of Anhui and Northeastern cuisine.
That's a bit strange.
It's amazing how a Canadian of Mexican descent has become so proficient in Anhui and Northeastern Chinese cuisine.
Pitt, on the other hand, was full of praise.
"Boss, this Chinese food is delicious! James's cooking is excellent."
This statement is not a lie.
Compared to the typical North American meals of corn, cola, and mashed potatoes for lunch, and hamburgers, fried chicken, and tacos for dinner, even a simple plate of Chinese fried rice can elicit rave reviews from these North Americans.
When it comes to food, China absolutely surpasses all other countries.
Shen Fei decided to tease Pete on purpose, and deliberately asked, "Are you praising Chinese cuisine or James's cooking skills?"
Pete picked up a skewer of vermicelli with his fork, stuffed it into his mouth with a clumsy effort, and mumbled after chewing for a while, "The food is amazing, and the cooking is superb. It's even better than the meal I had at a Michelin three-star restaurant in St. John's last time."
"This meal would cost at least 200 Canadian dollars if it were at a Chinese restaurant outside."
"And it's one of those inauthentic Chinese restaurants."
Pete finally swallowed the rice noodles in his mouth, then took a sip of the thick soup mixed with shredded meat and onions, and gave a thumbs up again.
Shen Fei glanced at James beside him. Although his expression remained calm, the crescent moon in the corner of his eye was impossible to hide.
Clearly, Pete wasn't a muscle-bound idiot. He didn't fall for Shen Fei's attempt to sow discord and praised both the Chinese food and James's cooking skills, making the three of them feel very happy.
Shen Fei took the opportunity to ask Pete about the Chinese food situation in St. John's City. He found that most of them were not authentic roadside eateries. The slightly more authentic Chinese restaurants required reservations in advance, and the prices were not cheaper than Michelin three-star restaurants.
In Canada, only wealthy people or those entertaining important clients will invite others to eat Chinese food.
Unbeknownst to many, Chinese food has become a symbol of wealth and status.
