Chapter 2: Everything is so terrible
The headless man tucked his head under his armpit.
With his other hand holding a pen and notebook that looked rather old, he squatted down beside the mangled corpse and asked questions in a businesslike tone.
The head that was tucked under his armpit opened and closed its mouth.
"What are you standing there for? You, yes, you."
The uncle gestured with his chin toward Ye Ren; despite having no neck, his movements were remarkably agile.
"What's your name? Tell me everything that just happened."
Ye Ren's lips twitched involuntarily.
Forcibly suppressing the indescribable sense of absurdity within me, I tried my best to make my expression appear calm.
"My name is Ye Ren," he replied. "I just got here and don't know anything yet, and then that big eyeball suddenly exploded."
Ye Ren spread his hands. What he said was indeed true. In a sense, he hadn't done anything.
The uncle frowned, his eyes full of suspicion, and he circled Ye Ren twice.
"You're a God-forsaken one? It's quite rare to see someone look so normal, so you have no idea why this person suddenly died?"
"I don't know," Ye Ren replied sincerely.
A mere mortal dares to attempt to use his pitiful and pathetic power, bestowed upon him by some deity.
To seek the true nature of a supreme being?
His fragile brain and soul were simply unable to bear even the slightest bit of information revealed by Ye Ren's true form.
The result was naturally that it was instantly burst apart by that enormous, incomprehensible torrent, completely collapsing and self-destructing from both the physical and conceptual levels.
I told you not to look around aimlessly, now look what happened!
The headless man muttered "the forsaken by God" a few times and then stopped asking questions.
This word seems to refer to people like him who are outwardly normal and show no signs of divine favor.
The man then turned his attention back to the messy pile of corpses.
He used the tip of his pen to pok at the fragments mixed with red and white substances, observing them carefully, and even bringing his nose close to smell them.
"Tsk, the divine power has been almost licked clean by those scum... They're just a bunch of hyenas who come just because they smell it."
The uncle's head made a disgusted sound. He stood up and scribbled a few lines on his notebook, "The remaining bits and pieces are of no use anyway."
After saying that, he put the pen and notebook back in his pocket and waved impatiently at Ye Ren, who was still standing there in a daze:
"Alright, that's all for you. You can go now. Live well. In this world, every normal person who dies is one less to go. Sigh."
Ye Ren pointed in astonishment to the pieces of flesh and brains on the ground and asked:
"Um... are we just going to leave this body like this? Shouldn't we do something about it?"
Upon hearing this, the headless man seemed to have heard something amusing.
He put his head back on his neck, making a "click-clack" sound.
Then he pointed to a shadowy corner of the street in the distance.
"Just leave them there?" His tone was undisguisedly mocking. "See those guys?"
Ye Ren looked in the direction he pointed and saw shadows lurking in the alley, behind the windows of dilapidated buildings, and beside piles of garbage.
Their postures varied, with them on all fours like wild beasts, their eyes fixed on the pile of minced meat on the ground, their gazes filled with greed, longing, and an almost insane hunger.
You could even see several people drooling uncontrollably, the glistening liquid dripping down their deformed chins and onto the ground with a soft "drip-drip" sound.
"Those scavengers are practically drooling," the uncle said coldly and indifferently. "The moment we leave, they'll pounce on us like mad dogs."
"In less than three minutes, they'll have devoured this corpse, leaving not even a bone fragment. Ha, what a jinx. You know, in the old days, it was all about burying the dead for peace... Never mind."
After saying that, he ignored Ye Ren's strange and complicated expression and walked straight to his old, rusty motorcycle that looked like it could fall apart at any moment.
He hopped on the motorcycle, skillfully started the engine, and the motorcycle roared under its own weight, spewing out a plume of black smoke before disappearing into the distance.
Ye Ren stood there speechless for a long time.
The wind blew through the empty streets, bringing with it the stench of blood and decay.
He watched as the figures in the shadows began to stir, and finally, the boldest one rushed out first.
Immediately afterwards, all the lurking carrion-eaters swarmed forward and pounced on the still-warm corpse.
"Delicious! So delicious! Nobody can take my liver, it's amazing!"
"Ugh, I ate shit! How come this guy's intestines can't hold it in?"
"Where's the poop! I love eating poop! Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Ye Ren turned around and silently left this disgusting place.
Wandering aimlessly through the city, Ye Ren tries to understand the logic behind how this world works.
The scenery along the way constantly challenged his newly established understanding.
The architectural styles here are mixed, with modern reinforced concrete high-rises, but most of them appear old and oppressive, with walls covered with metal supports for reinforcement and strange patterns.
More often, there are low, dilapidated buildings, crowded together like slums.
What truly makes this world seem bizarre and fantastical are its inhabitants.
For now, we can still call them "humans".
Ye Ren saw a woman whose body was so rotten that her bones were visible, slumped on the ground, muttering praises to the god of decay.
A man with a giant mouth on his chest was arguing loudly with someone, occasionally spraying yellow liquid from the mouth on his chest.
A woman with the lower body of a spider nimbly crawls on the wall, occasionally shaking off a swarm of small spiders.
Most people no longer possess a standard human form; their bodies have undergone various mutations due to so-called "divine grace," becoming bizarre and deformed.
The few who retained their complete human form mostly behaved in a crazy and erratic manner, deviating from normalcy.
"This world of ditch."
Ye Ren felt nauseous.
As Ye Ren walked, his gaze was drawn to a magnificent, almost unreal wall in front of him.
It was a city wall built of some kind of dark, massive stone, towering into the clouds, as if dividing the entire world into two parts, inside and out.
The walls were covered with intricate and eerie patterns, exuding a subtle sense of oppression.
A similarly massive city gate was slowly opening, emitting a heavy and long creaking sound.
A group of people were slowly walking in from outside the city gate.
Unlike the strange and excited residents of the city.
The group appeared to be in extremely poor condition.
They were all dressed in rags, emaciated, their faces blank and lifeless, their eyes vacant like those of walking corpses, as if their souls had long been ripped from their bodies.
People hunched over, dragging their heavy steps, each step stiff as a robot's.
In the midst of this deathly silence, a suppressed sob suddenly rang out.
Ye Ren's gaze was drawn to it.
