Chapter 26 Exam
The examination room was quiet, with only the scratching sound of pens slicing across paper.
Ji Mo has a solid foundation and answers questions quickly. He's not a perfectionist academic genius who needs to get perfect scores; as long as his grades are in the excellent range, that's enough for him.
The questions weren't as terrifying as Mo Ruqiu had described. After all, this was a university, not a high school, and the teachers needed to ensure a certain pass rate for the students. There were quite a few easy questions on the exam.
Take this dish as an example.
"The history of human dynasties can be traced back to the Dasheng Dynasty more than 1400 years ago. There are four known ancient dynasties: Sheng, Shuo, Yu, and Jing. Please choose one of these four dynasties and describe its characteristics in terms of politics, culture, and economy."
This is a total freebie; even a high school student could answer it.
Ji Mo glanced at the bright 15 points and felt that the teacher was really trying his best to go easy on her.
Archaeology is a very complex discipline, which can be subdivided into dozens or even hundreds of sub-disciplines. However, since it is a discipline with the word "ancient" in its name, the questions will not contain information related to modern times, that is, the current world government.
Ji Mo twirled his pen. It was only after joining the Sanchuan Tailor Shop that he realized something: the current government was more of a world government than a national government.
The mortal realm is composed of a vast continent, and so-called nations are the people who have unified this continent. Nations strictly control the right to enter and exit the mortal realm, meaning the right to leave and enter the mortal realm itself. People's impression of foreign lands is that of island nations on the other side of extremely distant oceans. Because their land is too small and their resources limited, they focus all their efforts on developing technology, resulting in strange and wonderful civilizations.
This continent is so vast, and dynasties have changed hands many times. Most domestic archaeologists spend their entire lives studying it, yet they only scratch the surface, rarely devoting their time to thinking about the history of ancient foreign countries.
Moreover, foreigners are extremely resistant to the arrival of archaeologists.
Those ordinary archaeologists probably never knew the real reason why foreign countries refused to let them conduct archaeological work—the so-called foreign countries were actually the outside world, or another world.
If archaeologists, who are just ordinary people, were to realize something and it were to spread throughout society, those small worlds would be utterly unable to withstand the wrath of the world government.
It is said that civilizations once existed overseas, but as the saying goes, the land was too small and the continental shelf was unstable, so they were basically destroyed by natural disasters such as tsunamis.
Ji Mo's thoughts were racing when her gaze inadvertently caught sight of Mo Ruqiu's focused back as she answered questions in the row ahead.
As a 211 university, Mingjiang University has successfully excelled in specific fields after recruiting renowned industry leaders such as Professor Jiang. Its archaeology-related disciplines now rival those of 985 universities. The admission scores for Mingjiang's archaeology program are already significantly higher than the average for other programs, meaning that students who are admitted are generally quite capable.
Mo Ruqiu is a typical example. Although she usually indulges in games and anime, she always manages to get a mediocre grade in the final exams by cramming at the last minute, thanks to her excellent memory and comprehension.
It might sound a bit strange, but having gotten used to the daily, repetitive clicking of the blue switches, Ji Mo found the sudden quietness of the dorm these past few days quite unusual.
After all, this situation only lasts for less than ten days a year.
The bell rang for the papers to be handed in.
Ji Mo packed up her stationery and walked out of the examination room, where she ran into Mo Ruqiu, who had just handed in her paper, in the corridor.
"Great, another subject passed." Mo Ruqiu seemed to be in a good mood, as if she was very confident about her score in this subject.
"If you don't like archaeology, why did you choose this major?" Ji Mo asked casually. He had long noticed that Mo Ruqiu lacked enthusiasm for archaeology.
"It was my mom's requirement." Mo Ruqiu rubbed his aching wrist. He had applied to university as a liberal arts student. "When I was filling out my application, she gave me several majors that accepted both arts and science students. You know I hate math. Back then, I checked the course schedule, and archaeology had the lowest math requirements."
Ji Mo nodded knowingly, recalling Mo Ruqiu's advanced mathematics scores that needed to be retaken.
"And you?" Mo Ruqiu countered, "Why did you choose archaeology? With your abilities, you could have made more money by choosing a popular major."
He always remembered that Ji Mo often worked part-time. The job market for archaeology was narrow; graduates either went into tombs to investigate or worked as guides in museums, neither of which paid much. It was more of a major chosen for interest than for making a living.
Oh, except for those who plan to become tomb raiders. No, wait, if you're going to be a tomb raider, wasting four years slowly learning knowledge in school is just too much of a waste. Mo Ruqiu's thoughts drifted away.
"...People can't always rely entirely on others or things to obtain accurate information. There will always be some reservations or intentional concealment. That's the idea behind my application to study archaeology." Ji Mo added in his mind. He also needed this channel to understand the differences between the perspectives of ordinary people and extraordinary individuals on history.
Even extraordinary individuals may not know all of history; those who have lived from ancient times to the present are ultimately a minority, and they cannot possibly witness every major event firsthand. In this case, historical records kept by ordinary people are excellent sources of information, even if the recorders themselves may not realize it.
Do you believe that existing historical records are inaccurate?
"How many archaeological discoveries have been overturned in recent years?"
"That's true," Mo Ruqiu agreed. "Take our city for example. It was originally quite ordinary, but in the last ten years or so, a series of large tombs have been discovered, and it's said that a lot of groundbreaking things have been unearthed. Now, municipal construction is carried out with extreme caution, for fear of accidentally unearthing another ancient tomb."
After hearing these words, Ji Mo inexplicably recalled his first time practicing tomb raiding.
The school's explanation back then made some sense. Professionals from the city where the cemetery is located generally have higher priority, which also led to more internship opportunities for students like them.
The owner of that tomb was a famous scholar in history. Among the burial objects were many bamboo slips. Hundreds of bamboo slips placed together could be felt as heavy as they were.
When a group of students were overjoyed, thinking they could decipher ancient documents and that there were so many bamboo slips that everyone could have a job, reality gave them a harsh blow.
The bamboo slips were all empty.
Who would have thought that a famous scholar in ancient times would do the same thing as modern people, buying a bunch of books with only covers and putting them on their bookshelves to look sophisticated, and placing a bunch of blank bamboo slips as burial items.
My original plan to use the documents on the bamboo slips to further speculate on the culture and politics of that dynasty has turned into doubt about this historical figure.
By comparing the documents found in other tombs, the archaeologists finally realized that they had made the same mistake as the ancients who had praised this scholar back then—this scholar was just an ordinary person who knew a little about writing but was very good at marketing.
History has been corrected, and the scholars who published the papers have been honored, but who will compensate for the internship certificates that everyone originally had?
"Are you planning to do an internship this summer?" Mo Ruqiu asked.
The professors in the department are all good people and are happy to help students who want to pursue archaeology. Ji Mo spent the first two summers interning.
This time, Professor Jiang, a professional teacher, also invited him. The message is still on his phone. He said that in the western part of the city, less than 30 kilometers from the city center, an ancient tomb was accidentally discovered during construction half a month ago. It was very well preserved and, according to preliminary judgment, was at least a thousand years old.
"I probably won't go." Ji Mo was still thinking about the show. "You've been talking about me all this time, what are your plans?"
Like Ji Mo, Mo Ruqiu was also not a local student.
"Me? I'm going home, since it's just my mom there."
"Please give my regards to your aunt."
