Chapter 40 Thoughts
When Wei Xun arrived at the company, it was just past eight o'clock. The secretariat had already placed the organized documents on his desk.
He took off his suit jacket and handed it to Qinglin, turned to the page on precision machinery, his fingertip pointing to the clause on lowering tariffs, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Wei Xun was working at a high efficiency throughout the morning.
At the meeting, he pointed out two loopholes in the quotation, finalized the video conference time with E-Alliance's partner, and approved the new production plan.
As noon approached, he closed the last document, rubbed his temples, and called out to the door, "Qinglin."
Qinglin pushed the door open and came in: "President Wei, the tutor applicants are already waiting. There are 10 people in total. I have screened them according to your requirements. The minimum academic qualification is a master's degree from a 985 university, and three of them have taught in key middle schools."
"Okay, let's go now." Wei Xun stood up and walked quickly towards the small conference room.
Ten job applicants were sitting outside the small conference room. When they saw Wei Xun coming over, they all stood up to greet him.
Wei Xun nodded and got straight to the point: "Let's begin. Come in one by one, according to the list."
The first applicant was a young man, twenty-seven years old, wearing a neatly pressed white shirt, with delicate features and a handsome appearance. His resume stated that he had a master's degree in education from a prestigious university.
His answers were clear and logical, his speech was steady, and his explanation of the teaching plan was very detailed.
As Wei Xun listened, his fingers unconsciously tapped the table, his gaze lingering on the man's face for a moment.
After the other person finished speaking, he didn't ask any questions related to teaching. Instead, he casually asked, "Are you married?"
The young man paused for a moment, then said, "I'm still single."
"Alright, go back and wait for our notification." Wei Xun's tone was flat.
The man bowed again, picked up the resume, and left.
Qinglin frowned quietly and asked in a low voice, "President Wei, aren't you considering him? His resume and answers to the questions are excellent..."
"So young, and so strikingly beautiful." Wei Xun interrupted her, "Nan Yan is simple-minded and easily distracted."
Qinglin suddenly realized what was going on and chuckled to herself, knowing full well what was happening.
"What are you laughing at? Next one."
The second applicant was a woman in her thirties who wore glasses, spoke very quickly and in a serious tone, and her answers were always about grades and college entrance rates.
Wei Xun listened for five minutes before raising his hand to interrupt: "Next."
The third was a man in his early twenties, an outgoing person who spoke with great enthusiasm and would occasionally tell a tired joke to liven up the atmosphere.
Wei Xun barely spoke throughout, and when he finished, he only said, "Go back and wait for our notification."
Wei Xun was not very satisfied with the next few applicants.
The ninth applicant walked in; he was a man around sixty years old, dressed simply.
"Hello Mr. Wei, my name is Zhang Qiming. I just retired from a key municipal high school. I taught Chinese for thirty years and taught fifteen graduating classes." The old man's voice was loud and clear, his eyes were calm, and he was neither trying to please nor overly nervous.
Looking into his sincere eyes and flipping through the student comments and award certificates he had brought, Wei Xun made a decision.
After all the applicants had been interviewed, Qinglin stayed behind to organize the materials. She hesitated and said, "President Wei, Mr. Zhang's qualifications are indeed not a problem, but he is getting old. Will he be able to keep up with the energy? And..."
Moreover, Zhang Qiming had an ordinary appearance, and was even an old man. Compared with the previous young and glamorous applicants, he was really inconspicuous.
"Older is better," Wei Xun interrupted her, his tone certain. "He's experienced, and more importantly, he has high moral character as a teacher. Also, he's bald, have you noticed?"
Although Qinglin had received professional training, she still couldn't help but laugh.
"Choose him. Contact him. Classes start tomorrow, and he'll be paid the highest salary."
"Okay, Mr. Wei."
Wei Xun checked the time; it was 2 PM. "Finish the afternoon's work ahead of schedule. I need to leave work at 4 PM and take Nan Yan shopping."
Qinglin agreed and quickened her pace.
When the time came, Wei Xun left the company on time and drove back to Huayao Mansion.
Nan Yan was already waiting in the living room, dressed in a clean T-shirt and jeans. When she saw him come in, her eyes lit up: "Sir."
"Let's go, I'll take you to buy a game console." Wei Xun picked up the car keys and gestured for him to follow.
Nan Yan nodded and obediently followed behind him, getting into the passenger seat.
The car drove into the digital mall in the city center, and Wei Xun led him into a large digital product store.
The store was filled with various game consoles, controllers, and game discs. The staff greeted us warmly: "Sir, which game console would you like to see? The latest motion-sensing game console just arrived, perfect for young people."
Wei Xun pointed to the latest model of the game console: "Take it out and let him try it."
The shop assistant quickly set it up and handed a handle to Nan Yan.
Nan Yan gripped the controller, staring blankly at the flickering screen. Her fingers pressed a few stiff buttons, and the game character wobbled erratically on the screen.
He played for less than five minutes before putting down the controller and shaking his head: "Sir, I'm not very good at playing."
Seeing that he didn't seem very interested, Wei Xun asked, "Don't you like game consoles? Then what do you want to play, or what do you want to do? I'll buy it for you."
Nan Yan lowered her head, her fingers clutching the hem of her clothes. After thinking for a while, she said softly, "Sir, I'd like to... buy some things for making cakes."
Wei Xun smiled: "Okay, then let's buy baking supplies."
He drove Nan Yan to the baking section of a large supermarket, which was filled with all kinds of flour, butter, cream, molds, and tools. As soon as Nan Yan walked in, her eyes lit up, and her steps became lighter.
"Do you like this?" Wei Xun stood beside him, looking at his serious expression, and felt a warmth in his heart.
Nan Yan nodded, then picked up a star-shaped cookie cutter: "This one looks nice too."
Wei Xun didn't say anything, but simply told the shop assistant to pack up everything Nan Yan liked.
Nan Yan made her selections very carefully. She read the description of each item meticulously, and when unsure of something, she would look up and ask Wei Xun, "Sir, may I buy this?"
"Sure, buy it if you like," Wei Xun replied patiently. Seeing that his arms were full of things, he asked the shop assistant to push a shopping cart over.
When paying the bill, Nan Yan looked at it and whispered, "Sir, didn't we buy too much?"
"Not much." Wei Xun paid, had the shop assistant carry the items to the car, and said to Nan Yan, "All done. Let's go eat. What do you want to eat?"
Nan Yan thought for a moment, a hint of curiosity in her eyes: "I've never had hot pot before, sir. What does hot pot look like?"
Wei Xun laughed.
He had completely forgotten that Nan Yan had never had the opportunity to eat these things in her previous life.
"Then let's have hot pot today."
He drove Nan Yan to a well-regarded hot pot restaurant, which was bustling with activity and steaming hot.
The waiter led them to a seat by the window and handed them a menu.
Wei Xun took the menu and asked Nan Yan, "Can you eat spicy food?"
Nan Yan shook her head: "I don't know, I've never eaten spicy food."
"Let's order a hot pot with two broths, one half clear broth and the other half slightly spicy, you can try it." Wei Xun made the decision for him and ordered a bunch of dishes, including high-end beef and mutton, air-freighted mushrooms, and more.
The hot pot broth was served quickly; the clear broth was steaming with a fresh and fragrant aroma, while the spicy broth was floating with red oil, its fragrance irresistible.
Nan Yan stared curiously at the bubbling pot bottom, her eyes fixed on it.
Wei Xun demonstrated for him, picking up a slice of fatty beef and putting it into the clear broth. After swishing it for a few seconds until the meat changed color, he took it out and placed it in the bowl in front of Nan Yan: "You can eat it now, but be careful, it's hot."
The tender meat, infused with the savory aroma of the broth, caught Nan Yan's eye.
Seeing his happy expression, Wei Xun's lips also curled into a smile.
Nan Yan ate very attentively. At first, Wei Xun had to teach her how to cook the vegetables, but she learned it on her own later. Watching the vegetables tumbling in the pot, her eyes were full of excitement.
Curious, he picked up a slice of meat from the spicy pot, his cheeks flushed red from the spiciness, and he couldn't help but gasp.
Wei Xun sat opposite him, watching him eat until his face was flushed, a smile always on his lips.
