Zhang Yong and his companions found a fork in the road on the main road outside the city and turned onto a side road.
The winding path was hidden in the darkness, becoming increasingly remote the further one went.
"Brother Yong, didn't you say your regular customers unloaded their goods at the docks outside the city? How did you end up bringing me to a place like this?"
The handsome young man looked around. It was pitch black in front of him, and he could barely see the road under his feet. He felt a little scared.
Zhang Yong, who was leading the way, turned around and said, "Du Fei, don't you think I'd tell you the exact location directly? I certainly won't tell you the truth until you've decided to join us."
Hearing this, Du Fei's fear lessened somewhat, but he still frowned and said, "But this place is too remote. Could it be that the customer is doing something shady?"
"Haha." Zhang Yong couldn't help but laugh. "Of course it's for shady dealings, otherwise why would I pay you such a high wage?"
Du Fei nodded, finding it reasonable, but he still pressed on, "Brother Yong, won't the authorities arrest us for doing this?"
"Pfft."
Sun Hao, who was following behind, couldn't help but pat him on the shoulder: "Don't worry, no one can see us in this secluded place. I trust Brother Yong!"
Li Han snorted coldly: "Your family is so poor they can barely afford to eat, yet you're still here being afraid of this and that. Since Brother Yong is helping you make money, he considers you a brother. If you're really scared, just go back!"
"This..." Du Fei's lips moved, and he turned around to see that the road he came from was already shrouded in darkness. Apart from the whistling wind, the only sound was the mournful cries of crows circling in the air.
He shuddered, a fawning smile spreading across his face: "Yes, I'll go! I believe in Brother Yong too!"
"That's right, you'll live a good life from now on if you follow me." Zhang Yong nodded in satisfaction.
No one noticed the strange smile that appeared on his face as he turned away.
The group fell silent and walked forward in silence. For some reason, Du Fei felt increasingly uneasy.
About an incense stick later, they climbed up a small hill.
Zhang Yong took out a tinderbox from his person, blew on it sharply, and a cluster of sparks scattered, the orange flame rising slowly and swaying uncertainly in the night wind.
The other three stood still, waiting quietly.
Du Fei watched anxiously as Zhang Yong raised the tinderbox overhead and drew a strange pattern.
He followed Zhang Yong's gaze and suddenly saw a lantern lit up not far away.
He squinted, barely able to make out a small, covered boat moored at the ferry crossing with the help of the dim light.
"How much can such a small boat carry? Does it require four men?" he wondered.
Sun Hao grinned and said, "You're only realizing this now? Too late!"
Upon hearing this, Du Fei's eyes widened instantly, only then realizing that the three of them had already surrounded him in a triangular formation.
They wore smiles, but their eyes were fixed on him as if he were a dead man.
"Wha...what do you mean?"
His jaw was chattering, and even the slowest person would realize something was wrong.
But now his mind was blank, and his legs felt incredibly heavy, making it impossible for him to move.
Zhang Yong glared fiercely at Sun Hao and stepped forward: "What do you mean? Didn't you already know?"
"Brother Yong, don't scare me. You guys are joking, right?" Du Fei's voice was trembling with tears.
"What do you think?" Zhang Yong asked with a half-smile.
Just then, Du Fei suddenly felt his legs. Without hesitation, he covered his head and rushed toward the gap.
Li Han, who had been walking at the back, crossed his arms and sinisterly stretched out his foot as Du Fei ran past.
"Thump!"
Du Fei felt dizzy and fell heavily to the ground.
He shook his head, which was still spinning from the fall, and struggled to crawl forward, gripping the ground with both hands.
Footsteps sounded.
A foot stepped on his back and ground down hard.
Instantly, his heart sank to the bottom, and he felt as if his chest was being pressed down so hard that he couldn't breathe.
Where are you going?
Hearing that voice, which sounded like the Grim Reaper's, Du Fei's face filled with despair, tears streaming down his face. He could only manage to utter a few words: "No, don't kill me!"
Sun Hao walked over with a broad smile and said mockingly, "Who said I was going to kill you?"
At this moment, Zhang Yong loosened his grip slightly.
Du Fei gasped for breath and pleaded repeatedly, "Please let me go. My elderly mother is seriously ill in bed and is waiting for me to go back and get her medicine."
He was so terrified that his voice became hoarse and high-pitched, the tone completely changed, and his original timbre was unrecognizable.
Zhang Yong glanced slyly at his companion: "Tsk tsk, Sun Hao, look, this guy has an elderly mother waiting for him, should we let him go?"
Upon hearing this, Du Fei seemed to see a glimmer of hope, and his tone became even more urgent: "Yes, yes, and my wife too! To save me some food, she's so hungry she can barely walk every day. If I don't go back, they'll all die!"
"Brother Yong, this man is really pitiful, why don't we just let him go?" Sun Hao sighed, a look of reluctance on his face.
"Alright." Zhang Yong loosened his grip. "You've had a tough life too. Remember to take good care of them when you get back."
Du Fei felt as if he had been granted a pardon. He struggled to his feet, feeling dizzy and repeatedly bowing, "Thank you, Brother Yong, thank you, Brother Hao, I will definitely remember."
"Hey! I said," Li Han walked over, carrying a wooden stick he had hidden there beforehand, "Have you forgotten about me?"
"Thanks..." Du Fei turned his head and saw a stick flash by.
"Bang!"
His vision went black, and with fear and astonishment on his face, he collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
"Thank you my ass!" Li Han coughed up a mouthful of phlegm and spat it on the ground. "You two always pull this stunt, is it really that funny?"
Sun Hao grinned foolishly as he pulled a meat bun from his pocket and took a big bite: "Of course, catching someone isn't easy, it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to have some fun."
"Alright, you've had your fun. Let's get back to work. Those people over there don't have much patience," Zhang Yong said coldly, glancing at the lanterns not far away.
Sun Hao finished his steamed bun in a few bites, went to the unconscious Du Fei, grabbed him, and skillfully carried him on his back.
"Same as always, Li Han will keep watch here, Sun Hao and I will go and make the deal," Zhang Yong instructed.
Li Han nodded and found a sheltered, hollow spot to stay in.
Not long after, he suddenly heard a faint sound.
"What's that noise?"
Li Han peeked out and saw a figure lying on the mound.
"Damn it, there are still people here. Let's kill them first!"
He slowly picked up the wooden stick and charged straight at it.
The two were very close, and he reached the man in just a few steps.
To his surprise, the figure reacted quickly and flipped over in a short time.
"Unfortunately, you discovered it too late."
A cruel sneer flashed across Li Han's face, but his hands moved swiftly, and he viciously swung the wooden stick at Li Han's face.
