Chapter 122 War

As Norton finished speaking, the war officially began, with the navy and pirates simultaneously unleashing a barrage of fire on each other.

During the lull in the barrage of comments, on the sea surface, the smoke from the explosions had not yet dissipated, and the shattered wood chips and canvas fragments were still slowly drifting down.

More than a hundred warships and more than fifty pirate ships faced off across the burning sea. The gunners on both sides were frantically loading their weapons, their faces covered in sweat and gunpowder smoke.

"Second round of preparations—"

—

On the naval flagship, the gunner's voice trembled.

But in that brief moment, the Norton Pirates' fleet moved.

It's not a retreat, it's a charge.

"All ships—assault!"

Kro's voice was amplified and broadcast throughout the entire fleet via a Den Den Mushi (sound-transmitting electric telephone mushi).

The White Pearl accelerated first, its prow statue of a young girl holding a bird cleaving through the surging waves as it charged straight towards the dark mass of warships. The pirate ships behind followed closely, like sharks that had smelled blood.

"Fire! Fire!"

The second round of shelling erupted at an even closer distance.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

This time, the cannons from both sides roared almost simultaneously.

The shells crisscrossed the sea, forming a burning net. Some struck the ship's hull, shattering planks and sending fragments flying; some smashed through the deck and exploded inside the cabins; and some landed on the sea between the two ships, sending up columns of water several meters high.

A pirate ship's mainmast was struck by a chain shot, and the massive mast slowly toppled with a snapping sound, its sails blazing as they crashed into the sea. Another warship's ammunition magazine was hit by a cannonball, and the entire ship exploded in the middle, flames shooting into the sky and debris flying hundreds of meters away.

Splinters of wood, tarpaulins, and corpses began to float on the sea.

The distance between the two sides was rapidly reduced amidst the artillery fire.

On the naval flagship, Akainu watched the approaching pirate fleet and slowly raised his right hand.

"Since the shells are useless..."

His arm began to change. A scalding, orange-red glow emanated from his skin, writhing and flowing like living things, transforming his entire arm into a mass of cooling magma.

Heat rose from his body, distorting the air itself.

"Then let's try something else."

He suddenly swung his arm and punched the sky!

"A massive fireball!"

The moment that punch was thrown, the entire warship sank sharply downwards.

A gigantic fist, made entirely of lava, detached from Akainu's arm and shot into the sky!

That fist was bigger than a warship, its surface flowing with orange-red lava, trailing a thick black plume of smoke, like a meteorite shot out from the depths of hell!

But this is only the beginning.

Akainu unleashed a barrage of punches, pounding the sky with each blow!

"Meteor Volcano!!!"

Dozens of enormous lava fists shot into the sky! Those fists exploded high in the air, splitting into countless pieces of burning lava, which rained down on the pirate fleet like a meteor shower! Each piece of lava was several meters square, with orange-red flames flowing across its surface, trailing long trails of black smoke, densely packed, blotting out the sun!

In that instant, the sky turned red.

The pirates raised their heads; some had weak legs, some knelt down, and some closed their eyes.

Nami stood at the stern of the White Pearl, her face deathly pale.

On the bow of the White Pearl, Norton looked up at the burning sky, his silver pupils reflecting the flames, and clenched his right fist.

"A serious punch!"

The air was compressed to its limit the instant the fist was thrown, forming a wall of air that was almost tangible! Even light was distorted when it passed through it!

The fireball, larger than a warship, was crushed as if by an invisible giant hand, exploding into countless tiny sparks!

Then came the second, the third, the tenth, the twentieth—one after another, those lava meteorites exploded in front of the shockwave, the sparks from the explosions being swept back by the force of the punches!

It wasn't over yet. The shockwave pierced through the entire meteor shower and continued forward, forward, forward until it crashed into the sea!

boom!!!!

The entire sea trembled under that punch!

The seawater was forcefully pressed into a huge dent by the fist, and the dent grew larger and deeper until it finally exploded into a giant wave tens of meters high! Roaring and churning, it crushed towards the naval fleet!

Where the tsunami passed, fragments of still-burning lava were swept into the water, hissing and sending up white mist.

On the warship, the naval soldiers looked at the approaching giant wave with pale faces.

"Sea, tsunami" 6

"How could you possibly stop that kind of thing?"

Just as the giant wave was about to crash into the group of warships, Aokiji straightened up from the side of the ship.

He jumped off the warship and landed on the sea. The instant his toes touched the water, a cold, pale light exploded from beneath his feet!

"The Ice Age!!!"

The beam of light spread wildly in all directions from him! Wherever it passed, the surging seawater instantly froze and solidified! Waves were frozen in mid-air, turning into ice crystals! The giant wave, tens of meters high, was frozen into a majestic iceberg just before it hit the warship!

The crackling sound of the ice freezing continued incessantly, like the earth cracking open!

The entire sea area turned into a pale ice field in seconds! The still-burning lava fragments were frozen in the ice, emitting a last wisp of white smoke before going out.

The pirate fleet's ships ran aground on the ice, making dull thuds. The naval warships were in the same situation, stuck firmly in the ice and unable to move.

Smoke, fire, and waves—everything froze in that moment.

Only the wind is still blowing.

A cold wind, carrying the smell of ice shards and gunpowder, swept across this suddenly appearing ice field.

On the White Pearl, Norton's lips slowly curved into a smile.

The ice creaked beneath their feet, and both fleets were frozen on the same ice field, separated by only a few hundred meters.

The ships that were chasing, dodging, and fighting on the sea were all still at this moment, like a group of insects frozen in amber.

But the fighting did not stop.

"kill-!!!"

It's unclear who uttered the first roar, but the sound exploded across the icy plains, like igniting a fuse across the entire battlefield.

The next moment, both sides jumped off their respective boats almost simultaneously and stepped onto the pale ice!

Tens of thousands of people charged across the ice field at the same time!

The sounds of boots crushing ice chips, swords being drawn, muskets being cocked, shouts, roars, and curses all blended together and exploded above the ice, making people's ears ring!

The pirates and marines at the very front collided!

The screech of metal clashing against metal! The muffled thud of a blade cutting into flesh! The hissing sound of blood splattering on the ice!

Some were slashed down and fell onto the ice, leaving a dark red stain beneath them; some were stabbed in the chest and lurched forward a few steps before collapsing; some were knocked to the ground and trampled over by the surging crowd behind them before they could even get up!

The ice surface began to become slippery.

It wasn't because of the ice, it was because of the blood.

Naval soldiers, dressed in uniform white uniforms, stood in neat battle formations on the ice. Rows of flintlock muskets were raised and fired, the bullets bouncing and whistling across the ice.

The pirates were much more scattered, charging in groups of three or five. Some circled around from the side, some charged straight at the front, and some jumped into the enemy ranks by stepping on their comrades' shoulders.

Beside a stranded warship, a dozen pirates were attacking a naval lieutenant commander. The lieutenant commander's swordsmanship was swift and deadly; he killed three men with a single strike.

But there were too many pirates, surging in from all directions. Finally, someone stabbed him in the back, causing him to kneel on the ice, blood streaming down his clothes.

Elsewhere, several pirates were surrounded by a group of marines, desperately fighting back to back. One pirate was stabbed in the thigh and fell with a scream. His companion tried to help him up but was shot in the shoulder and staggered backward.

The sailors surrounded them, swords raised above their heads—

A black shadow swept past from above!

Sanosuke swooped down from mid-air, his black wings casting a shadow on the ice.

As he landed, his knees bent slightly, and the blade flashed across the throats of two marines, blood spurting out. With a flick of his left hand, three kunai accurately pierced the foreheads of three marines who were aiming their guns at him in the distance.

The surrounded pirates slumped on the ice, panting heavily, looking at him as if he were a god.

Sanosuke didn't look at them. He simply flapped his wings and took off again.

He hovered fifty meters above the ice field, overlooking the entire battlefield.

From here, the ice field looks like a huge, broken mirror.

On the white ice, there were dark red bloodstains, scattered weapons, and fallen corpses everywhere. The white uniforms of the navy and the colorful clothes of the pirates were mixed together, making them indistinguishable.

The battlefield was roughly divided into three areas.

On the left, near the frozen giant warship, Moria was fighting a tall vice admiral.

The lieutenant general was Ghost Spider, with eight arms, each wielding a sword. The sword light was as dense as a spider web, tightly binding Moria and his shadow.

Moriah's shadow continued to expand, contract, and deform, but it could never break through the net of blades.

Further to the right, Jinbe was surrounded by three vice admirals. Doberman's swordsmanship was fierce, Strawberry's spear was like a viper's tongue, and Fire Mountain's fist was wrapped in Armament Haki.

Jinbe's Fishman Karate could shatter the ice with every punch, but the three of them worked together so well that they never gave him a chance to catch his breath.

Right in the center, the most devastated area—

Zoro was entangled by a man wearing a dark green suit and a navy coat.

That man's swordsmanship was completely different from Zoro's; it was cold, ruthless, and every strike was aimed at vital points.

Zoro's three-sword style was powerful and sweeping, but it was completely suppressed by the other person's speed. Every swing of Yubashiri and Sandai Kitetsu was predicted in advance.

Akin is currently engaged in combat with two major generals.

In his Qiongqi form, he was enough to crush any major general, but the two of them coordinated too well—one launched a fierce frontal attack, using his iron body to withstand A Jin's claw strikes; the other moved from the side, using his finger gun to target his joints and the base of his wings.

Ajin unleashed several bursts of flame, which his opponent narrowly avoided each time, leaving charred marks on the ice.

Doflamingo stood on the hull of an overturned pirate ship, his pink feather coat standing out starkly against the gray ice.

His opponent was a tall, thin man in a black suit and sunglasses. The man was as silent as a stone, his fingertips radiating a power that Sasuke couldn't fathom, fighting to a standstill against Doflamingo's String-String Fruit. The ice around them was riddled with cracks, shattered and broken.

On Steel Hand's side, his opponent was a tall, expressionless man whose swordsmanship was incredibly fierce. Every strike was imbued with Armament Haki, carving deep trenches into the ice.

Steel Hand neither dodged nor evaded, taking each punch head-on, each collision producing blinding sparks and dull thuds. Blood was seeping from her fists, but a lazy smile remained on her lips.

Enel's lightning bolts streaked across the ice field, and with each landing, a group of Marines fell.

But his opponent—a CP0 member in a white suit and mask—always seemed to anticipate his location the moment he landed.

That person's Observation Haki was ridiculously strong; Enel's lightning nearly hit him three times, but he dodged each time by the narrowest of margins.

Bucky was being chased all over the ice by a major general, his head flying through the air and his body rolling on the ice, cursing under his breath, looking extremely disheveled.

Kro's "Ladle Death" weaves through the crowd, its cat claws leaving streaks of blood.

His opponent was a commodore, slower than him but more experienced, always managing to avoid vital points at crucial moments. The two chased each other through the crowd, knocking over one group of pirates and marines after another who were engaged in fierce combat.

Al and Dalton stood back to back, surrounded by the corpses of a dozen or so navy men. They were all wounded; Al had a slashed wound on his left arm, and Dalton had a deep claw mark on his chest. But their eyes were still bright, searching for their next opponent.

MR.1 and Paula were entangled by a major general and two brigadiers. MR.1's full-body blades were no match for the major general's iron blocks, and Paula's poison darts nearly struck several times, but were blocked by the two brigadiers at the cost of their lives.

And then there are the New World pirate captains who have joined Norton—some have already been defeated and are lying on the ice, their fate unknown; some are still fighting desperately, but they already have several wounds on their bodies; some are surrounded by three or four marines, struggling to hold on, and it looks like they are about to give up.

The pirates do have a numerical advantage, but the navy has too many elite troops.

Those vice admirals, rear admirals, and commodores were all seasoned veterans who had spent many years navigating the Grand Line and the New World. Their Haki, physical prowess, and combat experience far surpassed those of the pirate captains who had just joined them.

From his vantage point, Sasuke could see clearly—aside from former Shichibukai-level officers like Moria, Jinbe, and Doflamingo, who could barely hold their own, the rest—

Everyone is losing.

He took a deep breath, spread his wings, and glided to the other side of the battlefield.

There, a vice admiral in a red suit was chasing three pirate captains. His fists were covered in thick Armament Haki, and with one punch after another, the three captains were knocked down on the ice in the blink of an eye, unable to even get up.

Sanosuke swooped down, drew his ninja sword, and aimed straight for the man's nape!

Without turning his head, the lieutenant general slammed his fist into the blade!

clang!

Sparks flew! Sanosuke's hand went numb, and he almost dropped his ninja sword! He used the momentum to flip backward, landing on the ice and sliding several meters before regaining his balance.

The lieutenant general turned around, revealing a face with sharp, angular features.

"Lieutenant General—Iron Fist" Howard. The man looked coldly at Sanosuke. "You're the Demon King's bodyguard, aren't you? Hmph, I'll take your head."

Sanosuke didn't speak. He simply held his ninja sword horizontally in front of him, his wings slightly unfurled.

The next instant, the two of them vanished from the spot!

clang!clang!clang!

The shrill sound of metal clashing exploded on the ice! Howard's punches were fierce and domineering, each punch imbued with Armament Haki. Wherever his punches passed, the ice shattered, and fragments flew everywhere! Sanosuke's figure weaved through the shadows of the punches, his ninja sword slashing at those iron fists again and again, each time sending sparks flying!

Sanosuke was faster, but Howard's punches were too heavy. With each collision, Sanosuke felt his wrist go numb and his hand crack.

But he did not back down.

He can't retreat.
