Chapter 106 Enters the Next Stage

Ah Bao glanced at the police car getting closer and closer in the rearview mirror: "Fuck them, let's go for it!"

Two figures leaped out of the violently jolting truck cab like cannonballs. Song Zhaowen landed with a nimble forward roll to dissipate most of the impact, while A Bao was in a much worse state, almost tumbling and crawling as he fell onto the gravel, wincing in pain.

Almost at the same moment they jumped out of the car, the out-of-control truck, with its enormous inertia, plunged down the gravel slope, rolled and crashed into a deep pit next to it, making a deafening metallic twisting sound, and was completely totaled.

"Get up quickly." After pulling Ah Bao up from the ground, a sharp screech of brakes sounded behind him. The pursuing police car had already stopped near the crash site. The truck blocked the way, and heavily armed police officers quickly got out of their vehicles to give chase.

"Stop! This is the last warning, or I'll shoot!" The warning from the loudspeaker echoed through the valley.

Gunshots rang out again, bullets whizzing as they struck the gravel at their feet, kicking up clouds of dust.

Ah Bao was terrified, feeling bullets whizzing past his ears. His mind was blank, and he was simply blindly following behind Song Zhaowen.

In fact, he had no idea that the police officer in charge knew Song Zhaowen's identity beforehand. Those seemingly deadly bullets were all precisely "missing by a hair's breadth," only creating a realistic sense of death and forcing Ah Bao to have no choice.

Like rabbits being chased by a pack of wolves, the two scrambled up the rusty iron ladder, rushing towards the platform at the top of the tower.

The icy mountain wind howled, making it almost impossible to stand. Beneath one's feet was a dizzying hundred-meter-deep pit, like the entrance to hell. The thick steel cable trembled slightly in the wind, emitting a low groan.

Song Zhaowen rushed to the edge of the platform and grabbed the simple pulley hoist hanging on the steel cable. It didn't even have a seat, only two rusted iron rings and a crossbar for people to hold on to.

"Grab this." Song Zhaowen shoved one of the iron rings into the still-shaken A Bao's hand, while he himself quickly grabbed the other iron ring and the crossbar.

"What...what do we do?! I'll fall to my death!" Ah Bao looked at the terrifying abyss below, his legs went weak, and his voice trembled.

"Fuck your mother's words." He slammed his shoulder into Ah Bao, who was still hesitating.

"Ah~" Caught off guard, Ah Bao let out a shrill scream. His feet were lifted off the ground by the impact, and the immense fear made him instinctively clench the iron ring in his hand tightly.

"Whoosh~"

Behind them, the police who had chased them to the tower platform could only watch helplessly as two figures streaked across the huge mine pit like shooting stars and disappeared into the darkness of the opposite mountain.

The team leader put down his binoculars, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips, and whispered into the communicator, "The target has been moved as planned. Operation Owl, moving to the next phase."

The pulley's speed finally slowed down as it approached the opposite hilltop. Song Zhaowen seized the opportunity, and just before the pulley was about to hit the finish line's buffer device, he shouted, "Let go, jump!"

"Thump~" "Thump~"

Song Zhaowen landed with a nimble roll, quickly got up, and warily scanned his surroundings. A Bao, on the other hand, tumbled into a patch of soft bushes, rolling several times before stopping. He was covered in mud and grass, panting heavily, his face still showing extreme fear, and he couldn't come to his senses for a long time.

"Hahaha, I'm alive again." Ah Bao collapsed to the ground, his body limp, his chest heaving wildly. Those few seconds had been incredibly thrilling; his heart had almost jumped out of his chest.

Song Zhaowen walked over to Ah Bao, who was slumped on the ground, and held out his hand: "Stop talking nonsense, it's not safe here, get out of here."

Ah Bao used the support to stand up, and his gaze towards Song Zhaowen changed.

Ah Bao had only ever seen this kind of cool and composed man in his boss, Cai Ba.

"Brother Zhaowen—this time, I, Abao, owe you my life!"

Song Zhaowen chuckled, "Ah Bao, now that we've both escaped, why don't we part ways here..." He turned to leave, but Ah Bao grabbed his arm.

"What are you doing?"

"Brother, it's not that I'm stopping you, but you've never dealt with the mainland police before. These guys are like leeches, they'll definitely keep chasing you. If you run around blindly like this, you'll definitely get caught again, and they might even give you a peanut as a reward."

Ah Bao had finally managed to get close to the incredibly skilled Song Zhaowen, so naturally he wouldn't let him leave him so easily. Thus, he half-lied and half-threatened.

This was exactly what Song Zhaowen wanted. Although they had escaped from prison together and gained A Bao's initial trust, it was illogical for him to continue following A Bao for no reason. If the other party had taken the initiative to suggest it, then it would be a completely different story.

But Song Zhaowen still had to maintain a certain air.

Song Zhaowen sneered: "Ah Bao, who the hell are you trying to scare? I've only just realized these past few days that I've been used as a cannon fodder by you, damn it!"

Bribery carries a maximum sentence of three years, and since I'm from Hong Kong, the end result is extradition to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). I can find a lawyer and get bail in a year at most; but now, if I escape with you, a small crime becomes a big one.

As he grew increasingly agitated, he grabbed Ah Bao by the neck: "You've taken all my family's wealth! You're treating me like a child! I'll kill you!"

Ah Bao was no match for Song Zhaowen; he was choked until his eyes rolled back in his head in just a few seconds.

In a life-or-death situation, Ah Bao screamed in terror, "Brother Wen, let me go! I'll give you ten million US dollars as compensation!"

"Um?"

Song Zhaowen relaxed his hands.

"Cough, cough, cough." Ah Bao collapsed to the ground, coughing violently, and it took him a long time to catch his breath. Just a moment ago, he truly felt that the murderous glint in Song Zhaowen's eyes—that he wanted to kill him—was undeniable. At this moment, his last bit of doubt about Song Zhaowen vanished.

If Song Zhaowen truly had connections with mainland cops and everything before was just an act, then he would never have harmed himself. He would have even tried to create opportunities to stay by Ah Bao's side. But just a few seconds ago, this guy really tried to kill him!

Moreover, Song Zhaowen's reckless behavior was exactly the same as that of the gangsters Ah Bao had encountered.

Which undercover agent would kill their target before completing their mission?

Song Zhaowen kicked Ah Bao: "What the hell did you just say? Give me ten million US dollars? With your pathetic face, how could you possibly have that much money? You dare to mess with me? I'll break your limbs!"

Ah Bao wiped the saliva from the corner of his mouth: "You saved me, and my boss will reward you! ... Brother Zhaowen, I'm not trying to criticize you, but while you're skilled enough, your vision is too narrow. What's ten million? If you follow my boss, you can easily make tens of millions of US dollars a year."

"Tens of millions, in US dollars?! Damn, what kind of business does your boss run? Robbing banks?"

Song Zhaowen feigned shock: "You son of a bitch!"

"You're just bragging."
