Chapter 182 The Little Spider Testing the Waters
Peter Parker stood at the door, carrying his lunchbox, hesitating for a long time.
He could vaguely hear conversations and laughter coming from inside the door, as well as the soft clinking of cutlery against plates, proving that his Aunt Manna had guests today and was having a meal.
Peter glanced at the lunchbox in his hand and hesitated whether to knock on the door. It was clearly not a good time to disturb him, and the polite little spider thought it wouldn't hurt to come another day.
He turned to leave, but his feet wouldn't move.
Lin Yi's words seemed to keep echoing in his ears.
As if possessed, Peter turned around again and pressed the doorbell.
Peter regretted it as soon as he pressed the button, but it was too late.
However, he immediately thought that since Aunt Manna was entertaining guests today, she must be eating normal food. After all, he had heard the sounds, which might prove that his Aunt Manna was normal.
Unbeknownst to him, the little spider was subconsciously making excuses for Aunt Manna, after all, he really didn't want that kind Aunt Manna to be some kind of corrupted monster.
The moment the knock sounded, all sounds inside the house ceased.
Under the dim light, two plates of half-eaten food were placed on the dining table, just like the raw meat slices that Lin Yi had seen yesterday, with an inexplicable purple texture.
Their previously cheerful expressions turned icy, so cold they seemed unreal.
Peter's dear Aunt Manna, with some purple juice stains on her aged lips, pulled out a tissue to wipe them off and exchanged a glance with the young woman opposite her.
The young woman was silent for two seconds, exchanged a glance with Aunt Manna, and then quickly got up and silently began clearing the table.
Aunt Manna walked to the door with a blank expression.
"Who is it?" It was the same kind old lady's voice that Peter knew, a stark contrast to the coldness on her face at that moment.
Upon hearing the voice, Peter immediately responded, "It's me, Aunt Manna, Peter..."
"I brought you some... food. I hope it didn't bother you."
There was silence for a few seconds inside the door.
"Oh, I see..." Aunt Manna's voice came slowly, "Could you leave it by the door, Peter? I'm... a little unwell today."
Leave it by the door? Peter paused for a moment. It was a reasonable request; normally he would have agreed.
But he came here with a purpose: to prove that Aunt Manna was a normal person! He needed to go in, see for himself, and say a few words to Aunt Manna to dispel that terrible doubt.
After a moment's thought, Peter steeled himself and said, "Aunt Manna, I have something I'd like to discuss with you. Could I come in and sit for a while?"
Another silence fell. Aunt Manna turned to look at the dining table. The young woman had already sat back down, and the table in front of her had been cleaned and tidied.
When Aunt Manna looked over, the young woman nodded.
Aunt Manna turned her head, her face instantly transforming into a familiar, gentle smile, before slowly opening the door.
"Peter, come in. You're always so thoughtful, bringing things over." Aunt Manna smiled and stepped aside. "But I've already had dinner."
Seeing Aunt Manna's usual smile and hearing her natural tone, Peter relaxed a little.
It was good news that Aunt Manna was able to open the door for him.
After giving Aunt Manna a discreet look, Lin Yi thought that perhaps Lin Yi was really joking with him.
"Come, let me introduce you. This is Asia, the granddaughter of an old friend of mine. She came to visit me today." Aunt Manna took the basket from Peter's hand, her fingers inadvertently touching Peter's, causing him to purse his lips.
My hands are a little cold, but that's normal.
"Hi, your name is Peter? Aunt Manna has mentioned you; you're always a helpful boy to the neighbors." Asiya greeted Peter with a polite smile, standing up from her chair. "I'm Asiya."
"Hello, I'm Peter."
He was a normal person, no matter how you looked at it, which made Peter breathe a sigh of relief.
But when Peter saw the dining table the next second, he was puzzled again.
"Aunt Manna, have you finished eating so quickly? I just heard the sound of knives and forks outside the door," Peter asked casually.
"Oh dear, you child, when did you arrive? You haven't been standing outside the door for a long time, have you?" Aunt Manna patted Peter with a smile, seemingly scolding him for not knocking on the door sooner, but the smile didn't reach his eyes and even became a little stiff.
"It's probably the sound of me stirring my coffee. Don't stand there, come and sit down," Asia beckoned to Peter and interjected.
The sound of stirring coffee? Peter didn't say anything more, and silently walked over and sat down.
There was indeed a half-finished cup of coffee in front of Asia, and an ordinary person would believe that. But who is Peter? Spider-Man. Could his hearing not distinguish between the sound of a knife and fork and the sound of a spoon stirring behind the door?
Asia was lying, and Peter's heart sank even further.
……
"Jarvis, how's it going? Any problems?"
Morgan, dressed in his battle suit, hovered above Aunt Manna's house.
Although it was hovering, the suit's thrusters emitted absolutely no light, seemingly due to the use of some kind of anti-gravity technology. Even the originally light-colored suit had turned pure black, perfectly blending into the night.
"Manna and the woman who called herself Asia showed no abnormalities on the scanner, but analysis of their micro-expressions revealed clear signs that they were lying," Jarvis reported.
"I need to remind you, Ms. Morgan, that ordinary people may lie to their friends and family in certain situations, and this single act is not conclusive evidence. However, considering the information provided by target Lin Yi, the probability of the current situation trending towards an unfavorable judgment is increasing."
"I understand," Morgan nodded. "We need to keep monitoring it. I have a feeling things might not be going well."
If you ate, you ate; if you didn't, you didn't. Why lie about such a small thing? It's intriguing.
Lin Yi thought so too. He looked at the shield next to his feet, which also had a camera peering out, and couldn't help but kick it.
Although the shield cannot see through things like Lin Yi, it has the ability to remotely scan and model, and its scanning intensity of hundreds of times per second ensures that it will not miss any details.
"What do you think?" Lin Yi asked.
"What do you mean, how do I see it? Of course I'll see it through the camera. This is just the beginning, what can I possibly see?" Shield replied without even looking up.
"I mean, what do you think Spider-Man will do?" Lin Yi asked, picking up a box of fries that had just been delivered.
"Hey, should he just ask directly? Peter's personality is what it is, he'll probably just ask directly." Shield analyzed Peter's personality.
"That's not necessarily true. I saw Peter glance at the refrigerator several times."
