Chapter 172 Peter's Confusion
Lin Yi continued to conceal his presence as he landed in the city, which was under tight control by robots. He casually strolled through the streets, observing life there.
Although there were many robots, few people seemed to find them offensive; on the contrary, many even wore smiles. Lin Yi speculated that this might be related to the order maintained by the robots. After all, with so many of them so densely packed, in the event of an emergency, a shout would bring nearby robots over in less than two minutes.
"Huh?" Just when he felt the safety factor was ridiculously high, it seemed like he was about to be proven wrong? Lin Yi noticed that there seemed to be an argument taking place in a small alley.
"I'll say it again, you old hag, give me my money! Now!" A dark-skinned young man in a tattered hoodie blocked the middle of the alley, clutching a switchblade tightly in his hand, threatening the hunched old woman with a fierce voice.
The old woman, carrying a handbag, showed little panic in the face of the young man's threat. Instead, she shook her head slightly, her face full of pity: "Young man, go find a proper job. As long as you're willing, society won't let you go hungry these days."
"If you're willing, I might be able to introduce you to a good job. I have some influence in this neighborhood."
"Old man, are you fucking kidding me?" The young black man gave me a look that said, "Did I not explain myself clearly enough? Or do I have to stick this thing into your body before you'll pull out that damn banknote?!"
Seeing this, the old woman sighed deeply: "Child, did you crawl out of some cave like a savage? How dare you do such a thing in this city?"
As she spoke, the old woman pointed to the alley entrance: "This city is full of robot patrols. I can call out and they'll be here in less than a minute. They're not just for show. Maybe you're from the rainforest? In that case, it's understandable that you don't know this basic common sense."
The young man's face flushed instantly. He was indeed from the rainforest, and in his eyes, those robot guards were just useless decorations. He was very hungry and needed to eat, so he didn't care about anything else.
"You old fool, you look down on me too?!"
The old woman's repeated lack of fear and respect made him feel looked down upon, so he stopped talking and charged forward with the switchblade.
"Ah!" The old lady was truly frightened, completely unprepared for the other party to actually dare to make a move here. She had initially intended to give them a chance and hadn't immediately called for the robot guard, but now she regretted it, though it seemed too late?
"Oh ho!"
Just as the young man in black rushed to the old woman, a red figure streaked across the sky, landed in the alley, and kicked the young man away.
The switchblade fell to the ground, and the young black man flew onto the wall. Before he could even cry out in pain, a wad of white silk gag was stuffed into his mouth, and more spider silk precisely stuck him to the wall, rendering him unable to move.
"Hey, ma'am, are you alright?" A young voice rang out; it was Spider-Man, Peter Parker from this universe.
"Oh! Spider-Man, good boy!" The old lady patted her chest in surprise. "I'm fine, you came just in time."
Peter chuckled. "Next time this happens, call the robot patrol immediately. Didn't I tell you that last time?"
The old lady sighed, "I thought he was still young and wanted to give him a chance, but who knew..."
"Those lumps of metal are too rough and aggressive. If the robot guards had arrived before you, they would probably have already reserved a burial plot for tomorrow."
As she spoke, the old lady shook her head. She had thought of others, but this was the kind of treatment she received in return, which made her feel disheartened.
Peter shrugged, feigning nonchalance, and said, "I also think the robot's behavior guidelines are a bit excessive. I'll try to give Mr. Stark some advice. I hope this hasn't affected your mood today."
Upon hearing this, the old lady laughed so hard her eyes almost disappeared. "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. Although their behavior was excessive, it is because of them that we ordinary people have the peaceful life we have now."
"Oh, by the way, this is a reward for the good boy who acted bravely. Keep it up, good boy. Robots are robots, but the world can't do without you." The old lady smiled and took a bag of chocolates out of her handbag, handed it to Peter without giving him a chance to refuse, and then left.
Peter watched the old lady leave the alley with a smile, without offering any polite words of refusal.
The old lady and Peter were already "acquaintances," and this wasn't the first time Peter had helped her solve a problem. Of course, it wasn't in dangerous situations like this; most of the time it was just everyday problems. After all, robots now handle the vast majority of safety work, and Peter, this "good neighbor," also has time to help people with more subtle assistance.
Moreover, this wasn't the first time the old lady had given Peter something. Before, when Peter refused, the old lady got angry and asked him if he was disgusted, leaving Peter at a loss. Fortunately, what she gave him wasn't anything too valuable, just some small snacks, so Peter let her have them.
The two were familiar with each other, but the old lady didn't know that Spider-Man was Peter's identity.
"Wow, looks like it's pension payout day today? The chocolate brand is pretty good." Peter looked at the chocolate in his hand, then shifted his gaze to the alley entrance. There, two robot guards were already standing quietly.
They were clearly on standby; Peter's identity was within the system, granting him certain permissions. Therefore, upon hearing the cries and rushing to the alley entrance only to find the situation under control, they took no action.
"It's your job, guys." Peter gestured towards the young Black man stuck to the wall. "Just handle it according to the rules."
Upon receiving the order, the two robotic guards immediately sprang into action.
Peter wasn't worried that the robot guards would use excessive force, since their ruthless methods would only be used when an incident occurred, and they probably wouldn't take any further extreme actions against the young black man who was already under control.
Having resolved this minor incident, Peter walked out of the alley, flicked a spider web, and swung to a high place.
He hovered silently over the city for a while, observing the streets below as usual. Since the advent of the robot patrols, petty theft and robbery had become increasingly rare, and thanks to the robots' efficient deterrence and handling, they were now practically nonexistent.
This almost caused Peter to "lose his job" on the spot, but as mentioned earlier, it gave him more time to help ordinary people solve everyday inconveniences. Especially for elderly women, who are slow at crossing the street or don't understand things like how to collect their pensions. Those robots are only responsible for safety; they don't handle these kinds of things.
