Dark Wizard: Rise! My undead army!

Chapter 537 Run away, don't be silly.

When the acting commander learned that the small world alliance would not accept surrender, he was utterly desperate.

Fortunately, the enemy did not make things difficult for him and let him leave.

When he returned to the city, the city gates were still open, and the soldiers who had voluntarily surrendered were still standing there.

Some residents inside the city were also prepared, carrying all their belongings and waiting at the city gate.

Some people sat in the shade at the foot of the city wall, while others leaned against the wall, all waiting for news of him.

Waiting for news that could save their lives.

The acting commander sighed deeply amidst the expectant gazes of the crowd, then said to the garrison standing inside the city gate:

"Run away, they won't accept surrender."

When those words were spoken, the people standing at the city gate were momentarily stunned, not quite able to react.

Then, the entire city gate erupted in chaos.

Some people screamed in terror, some turned and ran into the city, and some picked up their weapons that were leaning against the wall.

A soldier wearing iron-gray armor immediately picked up a weapon from the wall, gripped a spear tightly, and questioned angrily.

"Why not accept surrender? Don't they need us to farm for them, defend their cities, and do their work? Don't they need living people?"

The acting commander didn't answer him; he didn't understand it either.

Besides occupying cities and territories, as well as various resources and treasures, the biggest spoils for ordinary people are people.

Population is the real productive force.

But these monsters only wanted to slaughter!

Another veteran leaned against the shadows inside the city wall, the old leather armor on his body worn down at the shoulders.

He took out a gold-plated cigarette that he usually couldn't bear to smoke, took a deep drag, and then spoke:

"Escape? Where to escape to? The outside world is full of monsters. How far can we run out of the city? Can we even escape this world?"

That makes sense. The whole world is now overrun by monsters, and even if you can escape for a while, you can't escape forever.

The acting commander stood for a moment, then bent down and lifted the horizontal bolt on the inside of the city gate, placing it on a stone block by the wall.

He straightened up, glanced towards the direction outside the city gate, then stepped aside to make way:

"Stop talking nonsense, run! Run as far as you can, and whatever you do, don't look back."

The people at the door started to move.

The residents who had packed their bags early rushed toward the city gate, ready to escape the danger as soon as possible.

Every bit of delay increases the danger.

Those who run slowly are in the front row.

The first family to move was a man carrying a bundle and leading a child, with the woman following behind.

After leaving the city gate, they quickened their pace, avoiding the dangerous main road and heading towards the foot of the distant mountains.

The man's thinking was simple: since these monsters were heading towards the town, the deep mountains and forests must be safe.

With someone taking the lead, the others followed suit and walked out.

Some people pushed their carts and refused to walk the mountain path, so they had to walk along the main road.

Some people even helped the elderly man escape, but he couldn't walk fast and was quickly overtaken by those behind him, falling to the back.

The soldiers inside the city gate also moved. To prevent the enemy from discovering their identities and thus bringing about their deaths, they decisively abandoned their armor and weapons.

Some people took off their armor and threw it by the roadside, some threw their weapons into the weeds in the corner, and some left the city wearing only their undergarments without any armor.

You know what, this method really does make escaping faster.

Soon, the allied forces, having finished their rest and regrouping, appeared outside the city in high spirits.

The vanguard stopped about half a mile from the city gate, watching the people pouring out of the city disperse in all directions, showing no will to resist.

The residents of the city were terrified when they saw the enemy approaching. They abandoned all their belongings and began to flee for their lives.

Upon seeing this, the undead at the forefront pounced fiercely, annihilating all enemies in sight.

Soon, the main force arrived one after another, lined up outside the city, and began to advance, passing through the city gates and pouring into the empty streets.

At the city gate, only a few incapacitated beggars huddled against the wall. Some were squatting in the corner with their hands covering their heads, while others lay on their sides, already dead.

There was no longer any large-scale resistance within the city.

As the coalition forces advanced along the streets, they could occasionally spot a few figures at the entrances of alleys or along the edges of collapsed houses.

These are all elderly people with limited mobility who are left at home to care for their families.

Now all they can rely on is their not-so-sturdy house.

Those scattered figures quickly disappeared, intercepted by wandering undead or orcs, and no one stood up again.

Outside the city, those who had fled were dispersing in all directions.

Some people ran along the main road for a while before turning onto the country path, while others climbed over low slopes and entered the hilly area.

They fled in different directions, but most of them moved away from towns, towards the deep forests and mountains not covered by the coalition forces.

Those running in the lead had already crossed the first ridge, their figures shrinking into tiny black dots on the hillside.

The allied forces did not pursue the fleeing people on a large scale, but only sent some low-level bone hounds and bone beasts to chase them.

These undead are not strong in combat, but they are quite agile and are excellent for pursuit.

Those who hid in the bushes and ravines tried to struggle after being discovered, but faced with the ferocious bone dogs, they could only be torn to pieces.

Those who fled to the hilly area also heard the commotion behind them.

The bone hounds had entered their range, frightening them into quickening their pace.

The hilly area offers a wider view, and the figures of people and bone dogs on the hillside are clearly visible in the grayish-white light of the sky.

Those climbing upwards are still trying to widen the gap, while the bone dog is crossing the slope at an even faster pace.

On the hillside, a running man was caught by a bear-like skeletal beast and thrown into the bushes.

A terrifying scream followed, and the bushes swayed a few times before returning to normal.

In another direction, the three people running together were surrounded by a pack of bone dogs.

They huddled together, using sticks and stones they could find to beat at the approaching bone dogs.

However, the stones had limited effect on the skeleton, and the bone dogs ignored the group's attacks and fearlessly pounced on it to tear it apart.

A few minutes later, the area fell silent, and several blood-red shadows continued their pursuit along the ridge.

Meanwhile, the main force of the Small World Alliance had already crossed the defensive line outside the city and continued its advance towards the next city.

Half an hour later, the entire city fell completely silent.

The acting commander barely escaped death thanks to the concealment alchemical array inscribed inside the city lord's mansion.

He stood on the roof of the city lord's mansion, watching those gray-white figures move forward along the street, gradually shrinking at the edge of his vision.

Until they could no longer distinguish between the undead and the orcs...
