Chapter 191 I Don't Believe Your So-Called 'Trump Card'

"who I am?"

The old white man stopped and scrutinized everyone with the kind of look that comes from someone not wearing an eye patch.

That look gave Coulson a strange sense of familiarity.

"Put the gun down, Coulson."

The white old man spoke in a calm tone, as if he were chatting about everyday things.

"The safety on your gun is loose. I reminded you about it last time in Peru, but it seems you still haven't fixed it."

"Ah, you are...?"

Coulson gasped in surprise, his eyes widening as he stared intently at the completely unfamiliar white face.

This tone.

Walking posture.

There was also that little detail about the gun insurance that only he and a handful of others knew.

"...Chief Fury?" Coulson asked incredulously. "But...you...your skin color..."

"Even MJ didn't change this drastically, did he?"

Fury shrugged indifferently.

"That's called tactical camouflage, Coulson. For some well-known reasons, that black face now triggers a red alert at any airport in the world. I had to... make a minor adjustment."

He walked past Coulson, in front of "Black Nick Fury".

The "Black Fury" looked at the white old man walking over, stretched his neck, and then his skin began to change.

A few seconds later, another Skrull—Talos—appeared before the group.

This drew another round of stares from the crowd.

Fury turned around, his gaze finally landing on Ward, who was under control.

"Are you confused, Agent Ward?"

"The coordinates you received are correct. I am indeed here."

"But unfortunately... there's no alien weapon you're looking for here, only a snake trap specifically prepared for Hydra."

Ward gritted his teeth, his eyes dark and menacing: "Garret... how is he?"

"That's good. You'll see him in hell soon."

Fury ignored him and turned his gaze away.

"Originally, this was just a screening operation. I wanted to see who else on that plane, besides this little snake, could be trusted."

His gaze swept over Coulson, May, Fitz, and Simmons, finally settling on Skye.

"Congratulations, you have all passed the test."

"test?"

Coulson finally snapped out of his shock, a surge of anger at being deceived welling up inside him. He stepped forward, looking directly into the unfamiliar face.

"You call this a test, sir?"

"What if Ward hadn't chosen to use his fist, but instead shot May?"

"You're gambling with our lives!"

"This is war, Coulson!"

Fury's voice suddenly rose, and the oppressive force he exuded made Coulson instinctively take a half step back.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. has collapsed! Hydra has spread throughout our organization like cancer cells! I can't trust anyone!"

"I need to know if, when I turn my back on you, someone will stab me in the back!"

Silence fell over the hall.

"Take him away," Fury waved his hand.

Two Skrull agents grabbed Ward and dragged him toward a solitary confinement cell deep inside the base.

Ward didn't struggle or beg for mercy. As he passed Skye, he gave her a deep look, his lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only left a complicated expression before disappearing into the darkness.

"Alright, our reminiscing is over."

Fury straightened his collar and turned to walk toward the command post.

"We still have a lot of work to do. S.H.I.E.L.D. may have fallen, but we are not dead. As long as we live, the war is not over."

"etc."

Colson called out to him.

"Sir, I understand about Ward's matter. As for your faked death and face-changing... although it's outrageous, I can accept it."

"but……"

Coulson pointed to Talos, the green alien standing next to Fury, rubbing his chin, and the Skrull agents around him who were reverting to their human disguises.

"...We need to talk about this."

How many of these things are there on Earth?

Colson's tone became unusually serious.

"They can impersonate anyone."

"If they wanted, they could replace the president, replace the members of Congress, even... replace us."

"As a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, my duty is to protect Earth from threats. And now, it seems you're cooperating with a threat."

The atmosphere in the hall froze once again.

Talos stopped what he was doing, turned to look at Coulson with a meaningful look in his eyes, but said nothing.

Fury had his back to everyone.

"How many people? That doesn't matter, Phil."

He did not answer directly, his voice low.

"The important thing is that, at this damn moment, they are our only ally."

"Allies?" Simmons couldn't help but whisper, "...In all the science fiction novels I've read, alien races usually only have a relationship of conquest and being conquered..."

"They are different."

Fury walked over to Talos and patted the Skrull chieftain on the shoulder.

"Talos and his people are refugees. They lost their homes and were hunted by the Kree. They just wanted to find a place to survive."

"I promised them a new home. In exchange, they lent me their power and intelligence network."

"This is called a transaction, a fair transaction."

"But how can you guarantee they won't turn against us?" Melinda May asked coldly, her hand still on her holster. "What if one day they suddenly think, 'Hmm, Earth's pretty good, maybe we should find a new master?'"

"They dare not."

Fury's answer was resolute.

"I have a trump card, a trump card that they would never dare to take a single step beyond."

"Everything is under my control. You don't need to doubt that."

Out of trust in their old superior over the years, Coulson and May exchanged a glance and ultimately chose to remain silent.

"So, what should we do next?" Coulson asked.

"I have my own plans for the next step, and what I need you to do is..."

I don't believe it.

A crisp sound abruptly interrupted Fury's work plan.

Skye stepped out from behind the crowd. Despite her young age, her presence was in no way weak.

"I don't believe in your so-called 'trump cards,' nor do I believe in your 'control.'"

Skye looked directly into Fury's eyes, her large eyes filled with suspicion.

"What you just said is a classic political lie. 'Everything is under control'? Ha! You said that a lot before you were kicked out of S.H.I.E.L.D., didn't you? And then what? Hydra lurked right under your nose for decades!"

"Is your so-called 'control' like your 'control' over children with superpowers?"

The atmosphere instantly plummeted to freezing point.

Fitz and Simmons shrank back in fright.

They knew what Skye was talking about—the recent uproar over the "Secret Warriors" scandal.

Skye is now essentially firing her ultimate at Fury right in the face.

"Now, you've brought back a group of shapeshifting aliens."

Skye pointed to Fitz beside her, then to May.

How do I know that after today, Fitz will still be Fitz? And May will still be May?

"In the end, this war will likely end with these green-skinned people replacing us all and taking over the Earth?"
