Chapter 88 The Strange Gaze
Chapter 88 The Strange Gaze
(Four chapters today, brothers.)
It's been a while since I last saw Pepper, and she seems to look increasingly haggard. Is it because of me?
Jon took a deep breath, and his fingertips crackled with electricity, using the ripples to ease Pepper's fatigue.
Half an hour later, he draped a coat over Pepper, who was already asleep, and then walked out the door with his hands in his pockets.
"Happy," he called to Happy, who was almost asleep by the door, and ordered, "Cancel all the meetings this afternoon."
"Huh? What?" Happy shuddered, suddenly waking up. "Okay, I understand, I got it."
"I hope you really heard me."
Jon shook his head and was about to leave when the elevator doors in front of him suddenly opened.
Inside, Tony, dressed in a suit and wearing sunglasses, was standing with his arms outstretched in an exaggerated manner.
"Wow, wow, wow, happy, look who's here?"
Tony casually put his arm around Jon's shoulder and pointed at Jon, saying to Happy.
"Look, our blonde Barbie is back! It's been so long!"
He winked his right eye at Jon and started talking nonsense.
"Even though it's only been a few days, it's probably what they mean by 'a day apart feels like three autumns,' right?"
After saying that, Tony patted Jon's chest, widened his eyes, and exaggeratedly said, "Wow, so hard? You've been secretly training in the West again?" Before Jon could answer, he answered himself, "Right? I knew it."
"Shit." The smile that had just appeared on Jon's face vanished instantly, and he said in a deep voice, "You're still as annoying as ever, Tony."
"That's called humor, kid." Tony raised an eyebrow and patted Jon on the shoulder. "After all, as a heartthrob, you should be learning from me."
"Tony, fucking, Stark, listen up."
Jon's face darkened, and he slapped his hand away, saying...
"I'll give you a nickname that's a million times worse than Blonde Barbie someday."
Actually, he really wanted to call him by the nickname "Tony Shit Big," but it was a nickname that a certain lovable old man who liked to make cameo appearances had come up with after much thought.
It's just a nickname; Jon Snow isn't the kind of person who likes to steal other people's ideas.
If he said it directly now...
When that temperamental old man makes his cameo appearance and learns about this, he might even be so angry that he cries.
So he can't do that kind of thing.
"No need, thank you."
"I already have enough nicknames, like billionaire and such." Tony took off his sunglasses, pointed to the wall, and said, "To be honest, I'd even like to frame all of them and hang them here."
"Damn it!" Jon sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I knew coming here was a mistake."
Just now, Tony's reaction made the astute Jon immediately realize that this guy was definitely holding a grudge against him for not replying to his message.
Moreover, given Tony's personality, with Jarvis around, how could he not know that he had returned to New York?
The earliest text message is the evidence; that's enough.
Maybe this guy even knows everything he did in the West.
And then there were the things happening in the West, plus Pepper's haggard appearance... Jon suddenly connected all the clues.
"Looks like you've thought it through?" Tony's expression suddenly turned serious. He lowered his voice, "Kid, shall we go upstairs and talk?"
Whether you stick your neck out or not, you'll get stabbed anyway.
Jon nodded and agreed.
"All right."
The two left Happy behind and were about to take the elevator upstairs, but as they walked, Jon suddenly stopped, his expression changing slightly.
As a half-human, his five senses far surpassed those of ordinary people, and at this moment, he keenly sensed something unusual.
It's a cold, detached gaze, devoid of emotion, yet filled with a sense of voyeurism.
There are very few people on this floor, only one department's employees, so where would their gaze come from?
Seeing Jon stop, Tony turned around in confusion and asked, "Jon? What's wrong?"
"Tony," Jon raised his hand to silence him, and said sternly, "Don't speak."
As he spoke, he narrowed his eyes slightly, took two small steps back, squatted down, and silently murmured, "Star Platinum."
The Star of Platinum appeared directly behind him, staring at the wall, its pupils contracting and shrinking like a camera lens.
Within its field of vision, a highly concealed pinhole camera was hidden within the pristine white wall in front of it.
"As expected..." Jon's expression shifted between light and shadow. "It really is this thing."
The next second, with a bang, his fist slammed into the wall, ripping the camera out.
"Take a look at this." Jon shook the camera connected to the wire. "Who do you think did it? Who do you suspect?"
"I'm more suspicious of the entire organization than of any single employee." Tony's eyes sharpened. "Do you think S.H.I.E.L.D. did it?"
"You've been around them in the West for so long, you should know their methods better than I do."
A knowing glint flashed in Jon's eyes—as expected, Tony knew everything. After all, he had left with Coulson.
"Let me think about it." Jon fell into thought.
I remember that the first thing Jon did after getting Level 5 access was to investigate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s surveillance methods.
According to the information, this old-fashioned pinhole camera has long been phased out and is considered an outdated product.
They are now using more advanced equipment that can be implanted into the target's body as long as there is physical contact with the target.
It can monitor location, emotion detection, steps, and even what you ate for breakfast.
Even so, Jon Snow did not dare to completely rule out S.H.I.E.L.D. as a suspect.
After all, in my opinion, this matter doesn't seem like a typical business conspiracy at all; it's more like the work of a professional agent.
Although his methods seemed very clumsy to Jon, they were still better than those of a typical corporate spy.
"Tony," Jon suddenly looked up, clearly having made a connection to something, "Has the company recently undergone renovations?"
""
"Just changed the decor a bit and moved a few things around," Tony shrugged. "You know, I donated some old antiques, so the interior is..."
Jon raised an eyebrow. It seemed that this spendthrift had donated all the artifacts left by his father. No wonder the whole company had been revitalized.
"It's definitely the work of an agent, but it's not necessarily S.H.I.E.L.D. It could be the FBI or CIA, or something like that."
"Really?" Tony pinpointed the problem. "What are the chances it's not S.H.I.E.L.D.? 20%? Or 10%?"
Jon fell silent, because Tony was right; that was exactly the kind of people S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were.
Nick Fury, the king of secret agents, is an even more outstanding figure among them, and his psychological problems are more severe.
That old sea turtle has no sense of security, doesn't respect other people's privacy, and doesn't care about other people's freedom.
In Fury's view, all restless people cannot have privacy; if they do, then he must know everything about it.
"Once I find this person, the truth will come out."
Jon, staring at the camera, asked casually, "Tony, are all the employees working normally during the renovation?"
He asked this question because he needed to pinpoint the approximate time and location of the suspect's activities.
Judging from the way the cameras are wired, it couldn't have been done by construction workers, and the surveillance cameras in this area wouldn't have captured this spot.
Furthermore, the way this signal was received completely ruled out the possibility that there was a mole among the employees.
"Everyone's on duty...and even working overtime. Wait, are you saying there's a mole among my lovely employees?"
"It's exactly what you think."
The two exchanged a glance, then turned their heads simultaneously, their gazes fixed on the office at the end of the corridor.
His gaze was ambiguous.
