Lord of Mysteries: Taiyi
Chapter 26 Little Carter
In the East District, at 5 Dalavis Street, a night school converted from an abandoned warehouse.
The gas lamp has been repaired, and its bright, pale yellow light illuminates every corner of the repaired wall.
After finishing some pre-school chores, around nine o'clock, the class finally quieted down. Only 23 children came today, including 16 girls and 7 boys.
There are still many empty seats, so it seems that most families still choose the official night school run by the church. Those who come here are probably families that live nearby or those who really want to save a penny on tuition.
Kurt looked at the group of children below the stage. The oldest was 14 or 5 years old. Most of them came from working-class families who could barely make ends meet or had some savings. In the East District, only such families would send a fully grown adult to night school.
There are very few students like this, maybe only 5 or 6. They may have come because they live close to Davis Street and it's convenient for them.
Of course, the same situation applies to older children, such as those around 10 years old; they only make up 4 of them.
Most of these children are under six years old, and their contribution to the family is limited. They also require extra care, so it might be better to send them to free night school; they might even learn something there...
Of course, there's also the possibility of a thief...
Kurt did not allow adults to come in and learn. On the one hand, the low barrier to entry for free might allow many criminals to sneak in and harm the children. On the other hand, he was afraid that his place would become a shelter, and many homeless people would use it as a place to sleep... This was also one of Hugh's tasks: to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the teaching area.
He might build some facilities for them to sleep in later, but not now; he doesn't have that much power right now.
In the East District, the gap between the rich and poor among the citizens of the world's most powerful countries is pitifully small. The biggest difference is only the number of patches on their clothes, the amount of food in their stomachs, and how long they can live. So most of the children in the audience wear faded yellow linen shirts that even nobles can't afford, and their cheeks have varying degrees of hollowness. They all have the sallow, rough skin that noble gentlemen can never envy.
Fortunately, two-thirds of the children still have a glimmer of hope in their eyes; they still have expectations for the world and hope to see their future in this land of hope.
Because a small number of the children had attended night school before, some of them brought their old vocabulary books and other items with them.
Kurt gritted his teeth, activated his spiritual vision, and found that most of the children's auras were somewhat weak. Some were unhealthy, some were very hungry, and none of the children were completely healthy... He glanced at Hugh standing at the door and noticed that her aura was somewhat dim, probably because she was also feeling sorry for these children.
Observing the children's condition, Kurt planned to buy some more food and simple medicine later... maybe he could get it from the Harvest Church, no, that's called reimbursement, I just need to spread the teachings of the Mother Goddess appropriately.
Seeing this, Kurt spoke gently:
"Hello everyone, my name is Kurt Bard, and from today onwards I will be here to impart knowledge to you."
"Before that, I need to understand your learning progress. Here is a test with some words on it. Please check the ones you know below. It's okay if you don't know any of them. This is just to better understand your situation..."
Kurt's current approach to playing the role of a teacher is to first follow the methods of his ancestors:
Education should be provided to all without discrimination, and instruction should be tailored to individual needs.
A teacher is one who imparts knowledge, instructs in skills, and resolves doubts.
"Among three people walking together, there must be one who can teach me." and so on.
What he's doing now is teaching according to individual aptitude...
Soon, the children's test papers were collected, and Kurt discovered that the child with the number 15 knew all the words, while 80% of the other children did not know any of them.
Kurt looked up at the seat corresponding to number 15 and saw a little girl, probably only 8 years old, wearing a pale linen dress. Her pale lips were tightly pursed, and she had gray pupils and prominent freckles on both sides of her nose.
Kurt remembered her name, Lucy, and it seemed she was brought there by her sister.
Kurt then divided them into groups according to their skill levels, and Lucy was chosen as the class monitor. Most of the children looked reserved and fearful, offering no objections and accepting Kurt's commands like puppets. The only sounds in the classroom were footsteps and the clatter of chairs…
Looking at the children, Kurt felt a little tired. He remembered when he first started elementary school, the classroom was either filled with crying or everyone looking around. But now, when the children here left their families, not one of them cried or made a fuss; it was eerily quiet.
Although he had expected it, Kurt still felt a bit exhausted. He gave up the idea of pre-class games and decided to teach for a few days first to let the students get used to it.
Kurt picked up the chalk, took a breath, and gave Lucy and the others some scratch paper to recall and write down the words they had learned. Then he began explaining from the simplest words like "I," "is," and "person"...
He appropriately used his extraordinary teaching abilities during the explanation, so any child who was interested in learning would be influenced by these extraordinary abilities, concentrate their attention, and then the corresponding knowledge would appear in their mind.
This makes it easy for anyone to understand and master. Of course, Kurt could make them master the language quickly, but that would probably overload their brains and damage their nerves... Moreover, they would have a hard time digesting so much knowledge, and they would probably forget most of it after a few days. Kurt's current ability is only to let knowledge enter the memory of the subject, and it cannot guarantee that it will never expire.
Yes, teaching must be done step by step, and we can't think about taking shortcuts. More importantly, we need to guide them and guide them to aspire to learning. During his teaching, Kurt also tried to summarize the role-playing rules himself.
The two-hour class ended quickly, with Kurt giving the children two breaks in between. Thanks to their exceptional abilities, they were able to learn almost every word. This tangible sense of progress kept the children quite enthusiastic about learning. Hugh, who had been observing the class, didn't spot any thieves or anything like that; Kurt even assigned her to correct the children's mistakes.
"Goodbye, Mr. Kurt." Somewhat unexpectedly, Lucy, with freckles on her face, took the initiative to say goodbye to him before leaving.
Kurt felt a warmth in his heart and spoke gently:
Goodbye, little Lucy, you're very clever.
Kurt resisted the urge to pat her head, because her sister was already waiting for her not far away. After watching them leave, Kurt received a few more thanks from the adults.
Then he said to Hugh:
"Looks like you can't leave work at 11 pm. I have to wait until all the children have left. Of course, I'll give you an extra 1 sole, how about that?"
Hugh already knew she couldn't leave work until 11 o'clock; she still had to escort Mr. Kurt safely out of the East End. So she had already told Fors not to wait for her to go back.
And it feels pretty good to help the children… Hugh added in his mind before speaking:
"No problem, but I don't need a raise. I also want to see the children return home safely."
Kurt's lips curled into a smile. Knowing Miss Hugh's character, he didn't insist. Some of the remaining children went home alone, while others were picked up by their families. Around 11:30, Kurt, seeing that everyone had left, was about to return to the classroom to turn off the lights and close the door when he was surprised to find a little boy lying in an inconspicuous corner of the classroom.
Kurt frowned and hurried over with concern, only to find that it was 7-year-old Carter, who had come here alone.
Kurt crouched down and checked his breathing, then breathed a sigh of relief; he was still alive, just asleep.
Under Hugh's watchful eye, Kurt gently woke the thin boy and helped him up, noticing that his thin, somewhat overly loose shirt couldn't hide the bruises on his arms and abdomen.
He wrapped himself tightly in his clothes to keep warm during class, so Kurt didn't notice. As for clairvoyance, almost every child had some illness or injury...
When Little Carter was awakened, she couldn't help but shiver when she saw the somewhat tall Carter and her somewhat dignified sister.
He pleaded with Kurt in a tearful voice:
"I'm sorry, sir, I accidentally fell asleep... I really have nowhere to go, my mother is asleep, there's no food at home... I don't know how to get home... They hit me."
