Chapter 59 A Different Past

"Mom, Mom, I'm home."

Huo Yuhao ran all the way to the woodshed behind the servants' living area. There was no bed in the room, only a few thin blankets on the floor. A woman was lying there, her face pale, her brows furrowed, and her exposed arms covered with bruises.

Seeing his mother like this, Huo Yuhao couldn't stop the tears from flowing. Just a few days ago, when he was helping his mother hang out the laundry, he accidentally bumped into Dai Huabin and was surrounded and beaten by his guards.

Later, Huo Yun'er heard the commotion and came out to protect him in her arms. However, Huo Yun'er was just an ordinary person, and after being severely beaten, she developed a high fever and became seriously ill. Helpless, Huo Yuhao had no choice but to take out the only savings that he and his mother had and try to get some medicine from the pharmacy.

However, since the servants in the Duke's mansion were all acting on the Duchess's orders, no one would be willing to help them.

Fortunately, fortunately...

Thinking of this, Huo Yuhao carefully opened his right hand, and the pill still emitted a faint emerald green light.

He rummaged through the room for a while and found a tattered water bag. After filling it with water, he put the pill inside.

The emerald green pills were immersed in the water, and after a moment they turned into streams of light and blended with the clear water. Huo Yuhao brought his hand closer to the water pouch and could feel a cool breeze coming from the water. It was as if a gentle breeze was blowing through his limbs and bones, and even the wounds on his body didn't hurt as much.

Huo Yuhao quickly helped his mother up and fed her a few mouthfuls of water from the water pouch.

He remembered what Wang Nan had told him, and after watching the water in the water bag decrease by about a quarter, he put it away and looked at his mother with anticipation.

After a while, Huo Yun'er coughed twice before slowly opening her eyes.

"Mom, how are you feeling?"

"Yuhao." Huo Yun'er raised her hand and touched Huo Yuhao's hair.

"Mom, shall we go outside and help you see the doctor?" Huo Yuhao stared wide-eyed at Huo Yun'er.

"Outside?" Huo Yun'er patted Huo Yuhao's head with a hint of heartache. "How could anyone outside be willing to treat Mom's illness?"

"I meant outside the Duke's mansion. Shall we leave the Duke's mansion?"

"Leave?" Huo Yun'er looked out through the woodshed door, her thoughts drifting far away. "But if we leave, what about your father...?"

"I don't have a father!" Huo Yuhao suddenly stood up, his face flushed. "That man isn't my father at all. If it weren't for him, if it weren't for him..."

Huo Yuhao was furious, choking back tears several times before finally managing to utter a complete sentence, "If he truly cares about you, Mom, why hasn't he looked at us, mother and son, even once all these years? He's all-powerful in this Duke's mansion. If he just said a word, we wouldn't have had to suffer so much all these years. He has no mother in his heart, no one cares about us!"

Huo Yun'er looked at Huo Yuhao before her. His face was streaked with tears, and the wound on his forehead had reopened, oozing blood. She struggled to hold Huo Yuhao in her arms, gently patting his back. Tears streamed down Huo Yun'er's face; the conviction she had held in her heart for so many years seemed to have shattered just like that.

Huo Yuhao and his mother embraced and wept, but subconsciously, the image of another person came to mind.

……

"Achoo!"

Wang Nan had just entered Xingluo City when his nose itched, and he sneezed violently. It seemed he was almost home; his mother was already nagging him again.

However, once he arrived here, his home was not far away. In no time, Wang Nan entered his house and saw the familiar courtyard.

The courtyard was small and simply decorated, far inferior to Shrek Academy and the White Tiger Duke's Mansion. But whenever he was away from home, he couldn't help but think of this simple courtyard, and every time he returned here, he felt a sense of peace.

"Dad, Mom, I'm home."

"Nan'er! It's good to see you back. Let me take a good look at you." Wang Nan's mother came out of the room upon hearing the voice, grabbed his arms with both hands, and immediately noticed the clothes Wang Nan was wearing from the White Tiger Duke's mansion. "Where did you buy these new clothes? They look so good."

"This was a gift from a classmate. How is it? Does it fit me?" Wang Nan didn't tell his mother the true origin of the dress, but simply turned around so she could see it more clearly.

His mother was just an ordinary person. Although his father was a Soul King, she only had a superficial understanding of Soul Masters and had never met a noble like the White Tiger Duke. If she heard about his experience yesterday, she would probably be even more worried.

Therefore, he concealed what happened yesterday, and secretly disposed of the blood-stained clothes.

"It fits perfectly..." Wang Nan's mother watched as Wang Nan turned around, revealing the tiger-shaped pattern embroidered on the back of his clothes. She paused slightly, then nodded. "It certainly fits perfectly. Did some girl give this to you?"

"No, it's a boy." Wang Nan paused, then explained, "I helped him with a small favor, and he gave me this as a gift."

"It doesn't look cheap." Wang Nan's mother touched the clothes again, seemingly checking the fabric.

"It's alright, but it doesn't feel as good as Shrek Academy's uniform." Wang Nan turned around and looked around, but didn't see his father, Wang Xing. "Where's my dad? I can't find him."

"Sigh, your dad took a commission to hunt for soul rings for someone." Wang Nan's mother's tone also carried a hint of worry.

Offensive-type Soul Masters like Wang Nan are fine, as they have the ability to acquire Soul Rings on their own. However, some support-type or food-type Soul Masters lack the ability to fight Soul Beasts head-on, so without a fixed teammate, they can only offer to hire other Soul Masters to help them hunt for Soul Rings.

This wasn't the first time Wang Xing had accepted such a request. He had found two suitable soul beasts for Wang Nan while on the way to accepting such a request.

"People are still acquiring spirit rings at the end of the year?"

"He's been gone for a few days now, he should be back soon." Wang Nan's mother ushered Wang Nan into the house. "Let's not talk about your dad for now. How long are you planning to stay this time? Are you going back to school just before the start of the semester, like last year?"

"It's not confirmed yet. I'm already an inner court disciple, so my schedule is more flexible than when I was in the outer court."

"Then you should go back even sooner," Wang Nan's mother said seriously. "Although I am not a Soul Master, I know that the cultivation of Soul Masters is most important before the age of thirty. Now that you have a better opportunity to cultivate, you should make the most of it."

"I know."
