Chapter 19 Magical Creatures
Chapter 19 Magical Creatures
Rod was sitting upright in a chair on the first floor of the Chamber of Commerce, flipping through the catalog of supplies provided to him by the person in charge.
Just then, the sound of horses' hooves came from the street outside, accompanied by the exclamations of passersby.
He looked up after hearing the noise outside the door.
In the middle of the road, three knights in armor rode by on horseback.
The distinctive fur trim on their shoulder armor made Rhodes realize that they were the native army of Dragonbreaker Fortress.
But his focus wasn't on the knights, but on the warhorses they rode.
It is pure white, with a handsome and robust appearance, and its entire body presents a beautiful streamlined shape.
Even more amazing is that as the warhorses move forward, they leave behind trails of icy mist-like ribbons, gorgeous and elegant, like snow fairies.
"What is that?"
Rod asked the head of the chamber of commerce curiously.
After glancing at them, the latter replied enviously, "Those three are patrol knights responsible for the security of the fortress. The warhorses they ride are a magical creature that only exists in the North, called Snowfield Steeds."
"It can run at high speed across the complex terrain of the high-altitude snowfields, and it has mastered the magical frost energy, able to breathe out icy mist to freeze enemies. It is said that deep in the North, there lives the king of the Snowfield Steeds, the legendary unicorn, but unfortunately I have never had the chance to witness it."
Rhodes thought of his own White Bread Iceblade Wolf; the three Snow Steeds and the Demon Wolf before him were all first-tier magical beasts.
But he could learn from the person in charge's introduction.
As a warhorse capable of fighting alongside knights and possessing a noble form, its value and status far surpass those of the Ice Blade Wolf.
Rod asked if they sold Snowfield Steeds, but the person in charge shook his head regretfully.
"I'm sorry, the Snowfield Steed is extremely rare, and the Grand Duke has it firmly under his control. Most of the time, it can only be seen in the army of the fortress."
"So there are still exceptions?" Rhodes noticed his choice of words.
"Of course, if you really want one, I can do everything I can to get one for you through special channels." The person in charge smiled and nodded.
"But at this price."
"How much will it cost?"
"50 gold coins." The person in charge looked at him sincerely. "Please don't misunderstand, the Snowfield Steed itself is worth 40 gold coins or more. To avoid future troubles, it's hard to cut back on expenses from various channels."
The price is reasonable, but I'm so poor right now.
"I can't afford that price." Rhodes shook his head, dismissing the idea.
He only has 15 gold coins in hand right now, and he still needs to cover the cost of supplies. He can't afford such an expensive mount.
Seeing that Rhodes refused, the person in charge was not disappointed. After signing the supply contract, he smiled and saw him out, while offering his blessings:
"Money is just a vulgar external thing. Noble blood flows in your veins since ancient times. Perhaps one day, the legendary unicorn will come and bow down to you."
The head of their own chamber of commerce spoke very politely, and even towards him, the second son, they treated him with great courtesy.
But there's really no need for that.
Rhodes had no hope for the messy, mixed bloodline in his body.
So in addition to the necessary supplies, he also purchased ten maned horses, a specialty of the North.
Rod stroked the horse, which was covered in thick fur.
Mane horses are a type of heavy draft horse that lives in snowy areas and are often used for hauling goods. They have short, thick legs and a robust build, but are not good at running.
Each horse costs 20 silver coins, much cheaper than the Snowfield Steed.
However, it is precisely these clumsy draft horses that, after enduring the baptism of ice and snow on the snowfields, which are fraught with peril, can successfully evolve into elegant snow steeds.
Rhodes wasn't interested in the so-called "recognition of a master" in the story; as a special farming-type wizard, he preferred to nurture things himself.
After bringing the ten maned horses back to the group, Rhodes received a report from his men.
He sent a letter of invitation to the Grand Duke, who declined, citing being too busy.
"It seems he doesn't want to see me." He finished reading the letter in his hand and put it aside.
This is a courtesy reply from the Grand Duke of Northern Frost's castle.
From the wording and sentence structure, Rhodes could tell at a glance that it was a routine reply from the castle clerk, containing no substantial content whatsoever.
The Grand Duke's attitude towards him can be summarized as: I know you've come, but I don't want to see you. Go do whatever you need to do.
It's better not to see him; Rodben didn't expect anything from this uncle anyway.
At least the other party didn't show any malice and even kindly gave them some preferential treatment at the city gate.
A day later, the short rest period was over.
After getting a general understanding of the current development situation from the Dragon Fortress, Rhodes obtained a new map.
He then registered his exploration plans at the city council office in the royal palace, which was located at the Dragon Fortress, and set off once again with his team.
Duanlong Fortress is not the border of the Northern Frost Duchy; there is still a considerable amount of territory belonging to the duchy to the north.
These knightly orders are currently pursuing three different paths.
With the strategic Agate River as the main direction, the royal family and many other noble knights headed north from there, venturing deep into the northern border.
The other two directions are two tributaries extending from the Agate River.
Rhodes chose one of the less crowded directions—going north along the Coldwater River, which branched off to the west, and entering the Coldwater Valley.
There are three small towns in the duchy along the road from Dragonbreaker Fortress to Coldwater Valley.
When Rhodes passed through, he needed to interact with the local lords to understand the situation.
After all, in the future, whether it's transporting supplies from the fortress to the territory or selling goods from the territory to the fortress, it will all require passing through these three places.
The entrance to the Hanshui River Valley, Hekou Town.
This is the last town on the road. Crossing here, Rhodes will leave the duchy's territory, where he will be free to explore vast lands.
The lord of River Mouth Town was a Rorosa, or, in the words of the Kingdom, a barbarian who worshipped the wolf totem.
Now that he has submitted to the kingdom, he has become the baron of this small town.
He adopted winter as his surname and changed his name to Mansaru Winter.
When Rhodes met him, the man was dressed in the silk robes of a royal nobleman and was welcoming him in broken royal language.
Upon seeing this, Lily, who was following behind Rod, quickly lowered her head and tightened her face to avoid laughing out loud.
The fat man in front of her had short, thick limbs, dark red skin, and an exaggerated tattoo on his forehead, which, combined with his dress, made her look inexplicably comical.
It looked like a dressed-up gorilla was dancing.
Seeing this, Rod patted her head and told her to follow the group to the back and temporarily camp outside the town.
He then brought gifts for the visit and followed Baron Mansaru into the town.
The town's perimeter is made of wooden walls constructed from three-meter-high wooden stakes, the tops of which are sharpened and then joined together.
As a border town, Rhodes had some doubts about the defensive capabilities of this thing; could it really withstand the barbarian attacks?
But Baron Mansarou looked very proud.
Throughout the tour of the town, he kept explaining how peaceful and harmonious the place was under his rule.
The residents lived happily, and the barbarians dared not attack him at all!
In front of the low shacks in the town, most of the hunched-over villagers stared at them listlessly. Rod glanced at them but offered no comment.
