Chapter 75: The Black Tower Regulator, a Potential Threat
Several charred beams lay scattered among a pile of grayish-white embers.
A middle-aged wizard stood with his hands behind his back in front of the dark, broken wall, his silk robe bearing the symbol of a black sun particularly conspicuous.
Outside Lorne’s residence stood a long line of wizarding apprentices, completely blocking the already crowded alleyway.
Several staff members dressed in the same uniform were continuously dispersing the crowd.
"Don't gather here!"
"Scatter! Don't obstruct the regulators' work!"
...
Lorne and Theodore were currently accompanying the middle-aged wizard beside the ruins of his dwelling.
He simply stood there quietly, yet he exuded a repressive aura, as if he had the ability to change the environment at will.
This is a formal wizard!
A very serious accident has occurred in the apprentice area, and naturally, it is necessary for someone in the Black Tower to handle the situation.
The supervisors are responsible for matters concerning the apprenticeship areas, and each apprenticeship area has a corresponding supervisor in charge.
The apprentices fight each other, and all sorts of bad situations occur.
Relatively speaking, the position of Overseer is considered relatively low in the Black Tower, as they are responsible for handling the trivial matters of the wizard apprentices and managing a group of apprentices.
"Detection Technique!"
A glint of light flashed in the middle-aged wizard's eyes as he surveyed the ruins of the wooden house.
Large numbers of phosphorescent beetles were reduced to ashes by the 'purification' effect of the Ring of Purification, leaving not even a trace of their corpses.
Lorne hadn't expected the Ring of Purifying Flames to be so powerful, and also so energy-consuming.
The fire-attribute energy particles stored in the ring have been completely drained and urgently need to be replenished.
"Lorne, what clues do you think he can find in a pile of ruins?" Theodore whispered in Lorne's ear.
The cabin has been reduced to ruins; any useful information has probably been burned to ashes.
"Who knows?" Lorne dared not make a definitive conclusion; it was not his place to judge the methods of a formal wizard.
The middle-aged wizard circled the wooden house, then squatted down at the back of the house and rubbed the charred ash on the ground with his hands.
"Have you offended anyone recently?" The middle-aged wizard clapped his hands and asked Lorne and Theodore.
offend?
Lorne thought of Lenorford, with whom he had clashed at the training ground.
He quickly shook his head, dismissing the conjecture.
Theodore's residence was not in the same area as his own, but at opposite ends of the exchange, and he had not interacted with anyone there.
Theodore was the only one who knew where he lived; how could Leonard possibly find him?
The most likely candidate is Sadiq, who visited earlier in the night.
"No." After thinking it over again, Lorne replied to the middle-aged wizard.
"You'd better think about this carefully," the middle-aged wizard said calmly. "This accident was deliberately orchestrated."
He began to analyze in detail:
"First of all, phosphorescent beetles only appear in sulfurous areas of resource zones. They are gentle by nature and will not attack humans unless provoked."
"Such a large-scale attack launched by phosphorescent beetles is unheard of in the apprenticeship area."
"The only possibility that would cause them to launch an attack is if they were provoked."
The middle-aged wizard paused for a moment, then pointed to the back of the wooden house: "Someone placed insect-attracting incense there."
"Then the phosphorescent beetles collected in the sulfurous area were released all at once."
This is a summary of what happened.
Upon hearing his words, Lorne recalled the figure that had suddenly flashed past the window while he was making runes, followed by a rich fragrance.
Although he remained vigilant at the time, he did not investigate in detail.
"I need to record your experiences during this attack and put them in your files." The middle-aged wizard waved his hand slightly, and one of his staff members immediately stepped forward.
"My Lord Regulator."
"Write down everything that the two of them say next."
"Yes." The attendant immediately took out a transparent stone: "This is a recording stone, which will record the following scene."
"Including your words, expressions, and so on." He gave the instruction, then activated the recording stone and lifted it up.
At the middle-aged wizard's gentle prompting, Theodore began to speak:
"I was fast asleep at first, and Lorne shook me awake..."
"This is my experience during the attack," Theodore said succinctly, describing everything he saw and heard without missing a beat.
Next up is Lorne.
"I was initially creating a 'protection' rune..."
"...At the last moment, I suddenly discovered that I had a spell scroll with the spell 'Purify Flames' written on it, so in the instant I was surrounded by the swarm of insects, I activated it with my mental power..."
Lorne stated calmly and with a composed expression.
After recording the experiences of the two individuals, the supervisor instructed his subordinates to use a recording stone to document the scene and some clues.
"Lorne, when did you get your hands on that spell scroll?" Theodore was still a little shaken. "If we didn't have that spell scroll, things would have been terrible..."
Lorne did not respond, but silently watched the middle-aged wizard who kept wandering around the ruins of the wooden house.
After a while, he came to the two of them.
"I'll send someone to inform you once the investigation is complete." The middle-aged wizard handed over a badge.
"In return, if you have any leads, you can use this to enter the Wizard Tower and report to me."
"Yes, Overseer." Theodore took the badge and said in unison with Lorne.
"Fall back!"
At the supervisor's command, all the staff on the outer perimeter ceased maintaining order and converged on the middle-aged wizard.
A passage was instantly cleared in the crowd, allowing the few people to leave.
The middle-aged wizard, who was in the lead, led the group away into the distance...
......
Black Sun Tower.
At the top of the black tower, which hangs upside down and pierces the sky, there seems to be a phantom of a "black sun" that is constantly twisting and devouring light.
In the shadows, the middle-aged wizard slowly landed, piloting a magical shuttle.
A gigantic vertical eye unfolded within the phantom of the black sun, its faint ripples sweeping over the group led by the middle-aged wizard.
"My lord, where should we begin investigating this phosphorescent beetle attack?"
One of the accompanying members asked, somewhat exasperated, "We don't have a single clue."
"Investigate?" The middle-aged wizard's expression changed, and he sneered, "Why should we investigate?"
Why bother with the life or death of two mere wizard apprentices?
"We have fulfilled our responsibilities by recording this incident in the file and submitting it. That completes our task, and the rest is none of our business."
The middle-aged wizard began to earnestly instruct his subordinates:
"There's no need to get to the bottom of this; we're not here to serve these lowly apprentices."
"Regardless of the process or the outcome, as long as we can ultimately obtain the 'achievement', that's all that matters."
The subordinate nodded, clearly understanding the lesson.
"Oh, right." The middle-aged wizard seemed to have thought of something and instructed one of his subordinates, "Make a copy of the recording from the recording stone and send it to Hyman."
"This guy's been acting crazy lately, constantly asking the supervisors: 'Has anyone in the apprentice area used any traces of 'purification' magic...'"
