Chapter 21: Magic Array
"Not a coincidence?" Lorne suddenly remembered Lauren's mutterings after entering the Edelweiss Forest.
At the time, he was still agonizing over what fire element was, and Lorne just thought it was the wizard's thirst for knowledge acting up.
After all, who would have the time to venture deep into the elemental zone just to set fire to a forest?
For wizards, there's no time to pursue the truth, so what benefit would an apprentice gain from doing so?
"Is there some hidden story?" Nina interrupted Lauren, who was somewhat engrossed.
"If I'm not mistaken," Lauren picked up "Fundamentals of Runebook," stroking the dark red patterns with a touch of fascination.
"This should be a large guiding magic circle."
"A guiding magic circle?" Nina didn't understand its meaning and looked at Rudolf with a puzzled expression.
Rudolf shook his head; he didn't know either, after all, he hadn't become a wizard apprentice yet.
But Rudolph doesn't need to become a wizard's apprentice like Lorne to prove his worth.
His father sent him into the Black Sun Tower to try his luck; even if it didn't work out, the wizards of the Black Sun Tower would show mercy because of his noble background.
"What exactly is its function?" Rudolf found it hard to imagine that someone would go to such lengths to carve such a large-scale magic circle in an underground cave.
Lauren pointed to the area above their heads: "It's used to guide and draw in the fire element."
The group looked together at the collapsed hole.
Only then did they discover that there was a shallow barrier at the entrance of the cave, keeping the dense fire element out.
No wonder the fire elemental riots outside didn't affect the space inside the underground cave.
The ground shattered in the blink of an eye, and Lauren was knocked unconscious by the violent shock, leaving her no time to set up a protective shield.
Fortunately, this large-scale formation exists.
Lorne once again vowed in his heart that he would study the so-called runes after returning to the cabin.
It's too early to think about these things now.
The foundation for studying runes and similar things is built upon opening one's spiritual sea and becoming a wizard apprentice.
It's clearly not feasible to think about taking it a step further when you haven't even fully mastered the Black Sun Meditation method yet.
Based on Lauren's reaction, Lorne was certain that the array and the runes must have something in common.
Otherwise, Lauren wouldn't have been flipping through "Fundamentals of Runeology" while looking at the patterns on the array.
Looking at the various complex patterns and runes around him, a question arose in Lorne's mind:
Why would someone go to such great lengths to set up such a formation? Just to absorb fire element?
Lorne wasn't the only one with the same thought; Rudolf was also puzzled: "What is the purpose of setting up this formation?"
No one present could explain it, including Lauren.
He wasn't very knowledgeable about magic arrays and could only guess their approximate functions by comparing them with patterns similar to runes.
"I need some time to figure out most of the functions," Lauren asked the group. "Please clear out these areas."
He pointed to the part of the magic circle that was covered by piles of rubble and scorched earth.
The collapse covered a considerable area, resulting in many parts of the magic array being covered.
It wouldn't be easy for the group to clean it up without tools, especially since Nina wasn't very strong.
"Lorne." Rudolf drew his longsword, picked up a rock, and approached Lorne to speak: "What kind of breathing technique do you practice?"
The scene of that punch is still deeply etched in Rudolph's mind; Lorne's displayed strength is enough to attract his attention.
Normally, Rudolph wouldn't take the initiative to chat with a newcomer.
Lorne was reluctant to answer the question; clearly, Rudolph had mistaken the martial art he was using for a knight's breathing technique.
Perhaps it is related to the breathing technique used when activating the Threefold Force.
The way they breathe heavily and the breathing techniques they use are practically identical.
"Everyone has their own secrets," Lorne changed the subject. "By the way, does your breathing technique involve metal?"
"That's true." Rudolf agreed with Lorne's point of view and praised him, "You've observed very carefully."
"My breathing technique can activate the metallic particles around my body." Rudolf picked up a piece of charred wood and dragged it to the side.
While triggering metal particles might not seem particularly useful, Rudolph's application of this technique includes both defense and wide-area damage amplification.
Lorne recalled the scene of him guiding metal particles into the soil through his longsword.
If you insert it into the flesh and stir it gently, wouldn't it just tear it to pieces? Lorne thought this breathing technique was quite promising.
"Lorne, which town are you from?" Rudolf asked casually as he returned.
He felt that he still knew too little about the boy in front of him.
Town? No, I come from Baron Wall's manor, my father was a farmer... well, never mind.
"I come from Wall Manor," Lorne replied after a moment's thought.
"Oh!" Rudolf exclaimed in surprise, "That's not a good place."
What does this mean? Is there a big difference between a manor and a town? Lorne doesn't know much about this world.
"This manor was granted to Baron Wall by a high-ranking nobleman." As a nobleman himself, Rudolf was very familiar with the surrounding area.
"The location is rather remote, far from the kingdom's bustling areas." He found it incredible that Lorne could even come to the Black Sun Tower.
"That's not a big problem."
"But the key is that Wall Manor is located in the central area where the kingdom's two great wizarding communities gather..." Rudolph didn't continue.
However, Lorne understood that the relationship between the Forest of Fireflies and the Tower of the Black Sun was not harmonious.
Caught between two hostile forces, it was in danger of being destroyed at any moment.
Moreover, due to its isolation from the outside world and the influence of wizarding forces, the atmosphere within the manor was bound to be very poor.
Lorne felt this very well.
An old man in black robes, the Forest of Fireflies... Lorne vowed to settle scores with them one day.
He knew that the culprit who led him to flee here was not them, but that distorted ideology.
But he needs an object to bear his hatred, and he needs a target; those things that are already deeply ingrained are things he cannot change.
Lorne had already envisioned countless exciting storylines in his mind, but he didn't stop working.
He grabbed pieces of rubble and threw them aside; the scorched earth turned his hands black as charcoal.
It's truly... a gem hidden in the dust. Lorne couldn't resist making a sarcastic remark.
With the combined efforts of the three, a corner of the mysterious veil surrounding the magic array was lifted once more.
Lauren, holding "Fundamentals of Symbolic Literature," joined in again.
After a period of comparison and research, he has made some progress.
"This magic circle serves many functions," Lauren explained to everyone, "including guiding and absorbing fire element, and transformation functions, among others."
"But its most important function is actually...transmission?" Lauren frowned.
Teleportation? That sounds pretty useless... Lorne doesn't understand. How can such a large magic circle have teleportation as its most important function?
"Transmission function?" Rudolf also found it illogical: "Transmit to where?"
"There." Lauren pointed to an artificial tunnel whose entrance was blocked by charred wood.
