Chapter 83 The Spark
The man was about fifty years old, with a bulky build. He wore a well-worn aristocratic suit with a crooked old bow tie at the collar, but his hair was neatly combed.
He slightly raised his chin, his sharp eyes sweeping across the room, exuding the arrogance and anxiety characteristic of a pure-blooded nobleman from a fallen family, the kind Lux had seen at the Slughorn Slug Club dinner—trying to maintain appearances but struggling to stay afloat.
"Mr. Anthony!" Ivan bowed respectfully.
Anthony nodded slightly, his gaze falling on Lux, looking her up and down, his brows furrowing almost imperceptibly.
He spoke, his voice carrying a deliberately affected, melodic Russian accent: "Another lost compatriot? Very well, in this land ruled by Muggle tyranny, every seed containing ancient power is precious."
He turned to the crowd, his voice rising abruptly, carrying a inflammatory force: "Look at us! Look at us forced to hide like rats! The Soviet iron heel tramples everything! They fear us! They fear our innate power! They try to stifle the noble magic flowing in our veins with their crude Muggle tricks of so-called 'collective farms' and 'industrial plans'!"
He suddenly spread his arms wide, a speck of dust rising from the hem of his old suit: "But it's futile! Wizards are born rulers! Our power comes from our blood, from that pure and noble heritage. Those Muggles will never understand the true meaning of magic! They are only temporary!"
Lux shook her head; yet another fanatical Grindelwald follower.
In the crowd, a man in a faded military overcoat frowned deeply, and several other people next to him, also dressed in work clothes, showed obvious disapproval on their faces.
From the conversation, Lux learned that his name was Vova. He had been fighting on the front lines before he was shot in the leg, but after his leg became crippled, he worked in the factory for a while. One day, he suddenly discovered that he could make a wrench fly, so he excused himself from the factory due to illness.
Anthony ignored them and continued his speech, his eyes burning with fervor: "In Europe! The great Grindelwald has raised the banner of rebellion! He will break the shackles of the Law of Secrecy and liberate the wizards of Tsarist Russia from the shadow of Muggles! He will become our new Tsar! Leading us to rebuild a new order ruled by pure magical power! By following Grindelwald, we will gain unparalleled glory and power! Instead of using magic to start fires as we do now!"
He pointed to the piece of wood in the cook's hand that had finally produced a pitiful flame, his tone full of disdain, and then went on to talk about the problems in the Soviet magical community.
Lux probably guessed something after hearing Anthony's boastful words.
Although Anthony didn't know why he kept avoiding the current situation in the magical world, it wasn't hard to guess the current state of the Soviet magical world.
Since the Soviet government came to power, the Ministry of Magic here has been unsure how to communicate. The Minister of Magic once communicated with high-ranking government officials, who stated that the magical community must be made public and that all local wizards must unconditionally obey government guidance and not be allowed to be independent of the Soviet Union.
After several rounds of negotiations yielded no results, the Ministry of Magic had no choice but to use a forgetting charm to make several high-ranking officials on the other side forget about the matter.
This directly led to the suspension of the teaching of hybrid wizards at the Kodosdoritz Magic School in the Soviet Union.
At the same time, the pure-blood nobles who had long been part of the Tsarist era strongly resisted the new ideas that mixed-blood wizards might bring into the wizarding world, which made the Soviet magical community semi-closed. Apart from participating in some international conferences, they rarely took the initiative to communicate with the outside world.
Therefore, these hybrid wizards can only feel panic and discover their difference on a certain day when they display their talents.
These half-blood wizards initially chose to report to the Muggle government, but their unreliable magic only led officials to believe they were frauds and imprison them. Over time, underground wizarding organizations like Anthony's emerged.
The members of this underground wizarding organization called "Fireseed" are all half-bloods who know nothing about the magical world and are gathered together solely by their innate magical talent.
They lived in all corners of the Soviet Union, leading their own ordinary lives. Some were factory workers, some were textile workers, some were cooks... They all discovered their wizarding talents in relatively short time, at most three years, and in the shortest only a few months.
Most of them learned magic by chance: some accidentally obtained magic books, thinking they were some strange feudal books, and after reading a few lines, they found that they actually had a reaction; others were self-taught, and one day they found that they could make themselves float for a while, so they must have a good talent...
In a sense, they are not wizards in the strict sense, but more like wizarding students, or half-baked wizards.
They didn't have much of a clear understanding of magic; they just suddenly discovered one day that they possessed some unexpected ability. In the current context, if they told the local government, they might be arrested. They were very scared, but life had to go on, so they tried to hide it.
Anthony was the founder of the organization. Initially, many people came at Anthony's invitation, but later members were allowed to invite new members to expand the team.
According to Anthony himself, he graduated from Cordosdorez, is a pure-blood wizard, and received a formal magical education. After graduation, he went to work for the Ministry of Magic, but resigned because he could not accept the Ministry's current attitude towards the Muggle government.
Lux couldn't help but wonder how strong this person who spoke so confidently was.
Lux was surprised after reading it.
It was just a low-ranking soldier.
No wonder that despite his repeated claims that he was teaching his members orthodox magic, the members of Fireseed were all below the level of first-year students.
He's most likely a dropout from Kodos Dorez, overestimating this ambitious guy, but that's also why Lux is still standing here.
If Anthony were a level 18 hero unit, Lux would immediately seize the opportunity to stun him. But since Anthony is just a minion, Lux wouldn't mind playing around here a bit longer and also looking into the problem with those two dried corpses.
Vova finally couldn't hold back any longer. He stepped forward and said in a low voice, "Mr. Anthony, I think magic is just a tool to help people. It can light the stove so that the old and children don't get cold, it can purify the water so that people don't get sick, and it can ripen a little bit of food so that children don't go hungry."
He looked around at his companions. "We're gathered here not to be rulers, but to survive, to help each other survive."
"Yes! Vova is right!" a female worker chimed in. "If Uncle Ivan hadn't used magic to fix the well last time, we would have had to go out to the river to break the ice all winter!"
"And then there's Martha," the chef said, pointing to the older woman, "she can make pickles dance... well, it's not very useful, but the kids enjoy it!"
Anthony's face instantly darkened. He stared coldly at Vova: "Shortsighted! Foolish! You are only fit to use magic for lowly tasks. Lord Grindelwald has bestowed upon us the whole world, not these lowly tasks!"
He practically shouted out his last few words.
