Chapter 44 Vera's Choice
Vera's ward was at the end of the corridor, where it was relatively quiet. Also, because she was a werewolf and the Auror office director had made arrangements, the hospital had given her a very secure private room.
Especially as the full moon approached, the Auror office even hired an Auror to guard the door.
After explaining her identity to the Auror guarding the door, Lux pushed open the door, and a scent of sunshine and clean sheets wafted out.
Vera was leaning against the headboard, holding a Muggle fairy tale book and reading it. Her complexion was much rosier than when she was in the sewers. Although she was still thin, her light gray-blue eyes had gained a touch of childlike innocence and tranquility.
Upon seeing Lux, her eyes lit up instantly, and a wide smile spread across her face. "Lux!"
She put down the book, her voice full of surprise.
Lux walked over with a grin, and like a magician, pulled things out of her pocket, which was enchanted with a seamless stretching spell: "Ta-da! Look what goodies I brought you!"
Lux bought a box of Chocolate Frogs. When she opened the package, she found a wizard card with Merlin inside, as well as a bag of colorful Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Lux then jokingly urged Vera to try the one that looked like booger.
Vera giggled as she was amused by these novel magical gadgets, her eyes filled with curiosity and longing for this magical world, temporarily forgetting the pain in her body.
Just then, the ward door was pushed open, and Sherlock Holmes walked in. He had changed into a well-tailored tweed suit, and although his steps were still somewhat unsteady due to rheumatism, his sharp, hawk-like eyes remained bright.
Upon seeing Slughorn and Lux, he merely nodded slightly as a greeting, then his gaze fell upon the smiling Vera, his eyes instantly softening.
"Mr. Holmes! How have you been lately?"
"Miss Lux, very good. Those Aurors specially left a way for me, a Muggle, to get here. I just discovered that this hospital is in London, not far from Baker Street, so it's very convenient to get here. Vera's condition has also improved a lot."
Slughorn cleared his throat and stepped forward, speaking in his usual dramatic tone: "Good day, Muggle gentleman. I am Horace Slughorn, Professor of Potions at Hogwarts."
He paused, his face beaming with undisguised pride and excitement. "Today, Miss Lux and I have come not only to visit Miss Vera, but also to bring her a gift that may change her destiny."
As he spoke, he carefully took out a crystal bottle from his pocket, which contained the wolfsbane potion.
Lux continued, "Mr. Holmes, this is a brand new potion we call Wolfsbane Potion. Theoretically, it can allow werewolves to remain rational and no longer be controlled by their animal instincts after transforming on a full moon night."
Holmes's expression instantly turned serious. He took the potion and examined it carefully, his sharp eyes seeming to pierce through the crystal bottle to see its internal structure.
He remained silent for a long time, and the atmosphere in the room seemed to freeze.
Finally, he slowly placed the potion back on the bedside table, his voice low and solemn: "Although I don't know the process of your magical potions, a brand new potion means it's untested, right? Vera will be the first user."
Lux hurriedly explained, "Don't worry, this is the most careful potion I've ever brewed in my life, it should be fine..."
Holmes's gaze swept over Slughorn and Lux, finally settling on Vera. "The decision on this matter rests not with me, nor with you, but with Vera. We have no right to interfere with her thoughts."
He turned to the little girl who had become tense again because of their conversation, and said in an incredibly gentle voice, "Would you like to try?"
All eyes were on Vera.
This ten-year-old girl had endured far too much pain and fear for her age. She looked at the bottle of medicine on the bedside table, which reflected a faint halo in the sunlight, and then at the deep concern in Holmes' eyes and the encouraging smile on Lux's face.
The fear of the full moon night, the pain of losing oneself and being dominated by violent instincts, resurfaced like a nightmare.
She bit her lip, and a hint of courage and determination beyond her years flashed in her light gray-blue eyes.
"I...I'm willing to try." Her voice was still trembling slightly, but it was unusually firm.
Holmes closed his eyes, nodded slightly, and said nothing more.
Slughorn let out a long sigh of relief. Lux stepped forward and gently handed the crystal bottle to Vera, saying softly, "This is today's amount. It will be a little bitter, but you'll feel better after drinking it."
Vera nodded, tilted her head back, and drank the entire bottle of potion without hesitation. The moment the wolfsbane potion entered her mouth, her face scrunched up, and her features scrunched up together.
"Ptooey! It's so bitter!" As soon as she finished the potion, she stuck out her tongue and flapped it like a puppy, trying to forget the bitter taste that seemed to penetrate to the depths of her soul. Her comical appearance eased the heavy atmosphere in the room, and even Holmes couldn't help but smile.
"This potion needs to be taken for three days to be effective, so I guess I'll have to buy you some more candy." Lux was amused by her and took out a Honeydukes hard candy and gave it to her: "Okay, okay, having a candy will make it less bitter."
She patted Vera on the back reassuringly, but in her heart she was silently praying that she would succeed.
Seeing Vera's expression finally relax after she ate the candy, Lux and Holmes exchanged a glance, knowing that they had done all they could. The rest was up to time to prove.
For the rest of the time, they stayed in the ward, talking to Vera to distract her. Meanwhile, Professor Slughorn carefully recorded Vera's initial, extremely subtle reactions after taking the drug, while Holmes quietly observed from the side, occasionally asking a question or two about the drug's mechanism and expected effects.
As evening fell, Lux and Professor Slughorn rose to say goodbye. Vera seemed to have grown accustomed to the bitter taste, and her eyes showed reluctance as she saw them leaving.
"Don't worry, Vera, we'll come to see you every day until the full moon," Lux comforted her. "Everything will be alright then."
Lacus and Slughorn bid farewell to Holmes and Vera, and once again returned to the familiar Hogwarts Castle through the Floo Net of the fireplace, their hearts filled with anticipation and trepidation.
"Professor, do you think we can take some Felix Felicis?" Lux asked Slughorn.
Slughorn patted Lux on the head and said, "From an experimental standpoint, you need to control variables. If you drank Felix Felicis to achieve a certain experimental effect, the Potions Society wouldn't recognize the formula and paper. Besides, are you really that insecure about yourself?"
"I've verified the theory behind this formula many times myself, and I believe there won't be any problems. What that girl needs right now is companionship, so you should go and see her more often."
Lux nodded heavily, bid farewell to Professor Slughorn who was still in a state of excitement, and walked alone on her way back to the Gryffindor Tower. She pushed open the door behind the portrait of the Fat Lady, and the warm and noisy atmosphere of the Gryffindor common room rushed out to her.
Anna is playing wizard chess with Phoebe, Mia is going crazy looking at her spellbook, and Lux is taking a deep breath, waiting for the results to be revealed on the night of the full moon.
