Chapter 4 Unconventional Wands
"I'll go first." Tom, who had been itching to get started, naturally took a step forward, while Lux clearly didn't care much.
"Tom Riddle... Riddle..." Ollivander's voice suddenly floated up as he slowly straightened up, his pale gray eyes narrowing into slits.
“Riddle…Riddle…” he repeated, his tone carrying an ancient echo, “That’s not a very common surname in the wizarding world.” Tom’s expression was off, and Ollivander himself interrupted, tilting his head, “Which hand are you dominant?”
Tom's Adam's apple bobbed: "Right hand..." He was also a little nervous, after all, this was a crucial part for the wizard.
"Aha." Ollivander waved his wand, and the measuring tape began to measure Tom's body, even some of the more unusual parts, such as the length of his ears and the size of his nostrils... At the same time, boxes containing wands flew out from the pile of his kind.
"Alright, let's go one by one. If nothing unexpected happens, the right wand for you is among these wands!" Ollivander placed all the boxes that had flown out onto the counter.
Tom looked at the long boxes on the table, and then at the wands all over the room.
"Mr. Ollivander, how did you know these might be suitable for me? How exactly do you choose wands?"
Ollivander waved his hand. "Next, the wand chooses you."
"The uniqueness of each wand lies in its core, made from materials taken from magical creatures." Ollivander suddenly held the wand up to his eyes, the ebony shaft shimmering with dark patterns under the light. "These magical creatures are unique, and naturally, their wands are unique as well."
"Try this one, Mr. Riddle." Ollivander tucked the brass measuring tape back into his pocket and opened the dark brown wooden box. "Ebony wrapped around a dragon nerve, twelve and three-quarters inches long, incredibly powerful."
The moment Tom's fingertips touched the staff, the tip suddenly exploded into a ball of orange-red flame. The heat wave, like an invisible hand, forced Nelson to take a half-step back. He squinted and saw the flames condense into the shape of a small snake in mid-air, licking the spider web on the ceiling with sparks.
"Too intense." Ollivander pinched the end of the wand, gave it a gentle twist, and pulled it back, the wooden box making a dull thud on the counter. "Try this one." He tossed over another wand, its shaft as thick as a small rolling pin. "Dragonheart core, ten inches, can split a stone wall with a swing, but it's too steady."
Tom waved his wand for a long time without any reaction, so Ollivander simply reached out and tapped the wand with his fingertips: "Too steady, like a lazy pig to you."
"Change to this one." He turned and took a silver-grey wand from the glass case. "Applewood wrapped with unicorn hair, eleven inches." As soon as Tom grasped it, a string of silver sparks flew from the tip of the wand.
"Oh, sir, you and unicorns are not compatible at all. Try this one..."
Next, Tom tried one after another. The elm wood with unicorn hair shattered the cauldron in the corner, the yew wood inlaid with dragon heartstrings overturned half of the shelf, and even the hazelwood staff, which was said to be suitable for prophets, spewed black smoke in his hand, blackening the ceiling.
None of them were quite right.
The shop was a mess: a chair with a broken leg leaned against the corner, windows cracked like spiderwebs dangled with shards of glass, and the air smelled of burning. But Ollivander simply waved his wand, and the broken pieces of wood automatically pieced back together to form tables and chairs, and the broken glass turned back into windows.
Before long, a pile of wands had accumulated on the counter in front of Tom.
"Try this one too, holly, phoenix tail feather core, eleven inches, a labor of love."
Lux, holding her ice cream, overheard this and couldn't help but glance at it, since it sounded a lot like Harry's.
Tom took it and flicked it lightly. "Boom!" The newly repaired glass display case shattered again. "Put it down, put it down!" Ollivander hurriedly snatched the wand back from his hand, his face full of astonishment. This wand not only didn't fit, but it also exuded a strong sense of rejection.
"What a discerning customer, but this is the perfect time to showcase Ollivander's heritage as a wand shop!" he said, rummaging through the pile of boxes. "A wizard's wand is closer than a lover. Even a lover may not stay with you until the end, but a good wand can. So, you have to choose carefully."
He pulled out a box: "Try this! Yew wood with phoenix tail feathers, thirteen and a half inches long, a rare twin wand, the brother of the one from before, with the same core but completely different wood."
The instant Tom gripped the yew wand, a faint green light suddenly emanated from its tip, and the long robe he had just put on billowed backward, as if a fierce wind was sweeping through the area.
"Wow, Shadow Isles effects." Lux licked her ice cream twice in surprise, after all, it was quite a big spectacle.
"The yew tree is always associated with legends of death, but the phoenix is famous for its rebirth..." Ollivander looked at Tom, his silver eyes like a mirror, and said with satisfaction, "I have never seen such a scene in all my years in this business. You will achieve great things, Mr. Riddle. This is a wand that was born to be yours."
Tom, on the other hand, carefully felt the yew wand in his hand, the sensation as if his limbs were being extended, the wand completely becoming a part of him.
"Once I learn magic, with the help of this wand, maybe I can give Lux a good beating."
Suddenly, Tom felt a cool sensation on his hand that wasn't holding the wand. When he looked up again, he found half a cup of steaming ice cream in his palm, with a cookie on top.
"Congratulations, congratulations, Tom, you've been finished." Lux clapped her hands and walked over, looking pleased.
"Thank you. When did you buy the ice cream?" Tom ignored Lux's strange question.
Lux replied, "I just went out to buy it. You were just too focused on choosing a wand to notice."
"Why is there only half a cup?"
"I can't finish this, it would be a waste to buy you more."
"And this cookie?" Tom asked, picking up the somewhat familiar-looking cookie with a puzzled look.
"It's not that half a cup is missing, I'll have Poro share some of his rations to make up for it." After saying that, Lux tapped her head, revealing Fujika's classic expression.
Tom's fist suddenly hardened. "Once I learn magic..."
"It's your money, it would be a waste not to eat it."
"you……!"
After Ollivander restored the messy shop, he turned to look at Lux, who was pinning Tom to the ground and beating him again.
"Alright, Miss Lux, be a little more ladylike. Let go of Mr. Tom. Is your dominant hand your left or right?"
"Left hand."
"That's true. I've observed that your left hand has a stronger striking feel. Please stand still while I take your measurements..."
Next came the familiar physical examination.
"You are a combative and honorable lady, Yamaka, Ash, Hazel..." Ollivander murmured to himself, pointing out his wand as if calling out names.
"Try this one first, white wax, phoenix feather, twelve and a half inches, beautiful and sacred."
After Luxson took the wand, a bright spot appeared at the tip, not dazzling but perfectly harmonious and even.
"Light, indeed, is rare. Phoenix feathers would suit you, but ash wouldn't. Perhaps you should try this… maple, phoenix feathers, ten and three-quarters inches long, not particularly long but exceptionally strong. This wand favors ambitious wizards; otherwise, their magic becomes heavy and mundane. New challenges and changing environments will make this wand shine brightly as it enhances its abilities and status alongside its companions!"
Lux took the wand and could clearly feel the light dancing within the wood fibers. When she raised the wand, the wand shone with a halo the same color as her golden hair, as if the entire wand had become an extension of her light.
Lux tried to wave her wand gently, and a golden arc of light shot towards the ceiling, causing the dust that had accumulated for centuries to rise into the air.
"What a rare sight today! To have two such rare wand owners at the same time!" Ollivander exclaimed.
