Chapter 22 Sequence Start
Chapter 22 Sequence Start
After climbing the stairs and returning to the reception area, Klein was about to say goodbye to Rosanne when he heard the brown-haired girl say in a lighthearted tone:
"The captain wants you to come back on Monday to take care of some chores at home first."
"...Okay." Klein was quite grateful for the humane management of the Night Watch team.
He originally planned to get up early tomorrow and take advantage of his "wandering" job in the morning to go to the University of Tingen and find the faculty member in charge of the interview reception to tell him that he would not participate in the subsequent stages. After all, the original owner had entered the interview with the professor's recommendation letter. In any case, it is basic courtesy to have a beginning and an end. Even if he did not consider himself, he should respect the professor's feelings.
In the absence of telephones, with telegrams charged per letter and mail being obviously too slow, taking a public horse-drawn carriage was the most economical and suitable option.
Now that the captain has given him special permission, Klein doesn't need to work so hard anymore. He can sleep in and relax.
Klein was about to remove his hat to say goodbye when he suddenly remembered something. He looked around and lowered his voice, saying:
"Rosanne, do you know what the starting point of that complete sequence that the Church possesses is?"
This was something he had forgotten to ask Old Neil.
Rosanne opened her eyes wide and looked at Klein in surprise, saying:
"You want to become extraordinary?"
"Was I that obvious?" Klein touched the corner of his mouth, answering somewhat awkwardly:
"Knowing that extraordinary and mysterious powers do exist in the world, it's hard not to feel a little longing for them."
"My goddess, do you know how dangerous that is? Didn't the captain tell you? The enemies of the extraordinary aren't just cultists and dark wizards, but also themselves! Almost every year someone goes out of control, someone sacrifices themselves! Don't you consider your family's feelings?" Rosanne emphasized with gestures, her reaction slightly excessive. "Klein, I think staying in an office is a better choice. There's almost no danger, and the salary increases every year. After a few years, with some savings, you can rent a detached house in the North District or the suburbs, and form a happy family with a charming lady, with a lovely, mischievous little angel..."
"Rosanne, stop! Stop for a second!" Klein, sweating profusely, quickly intervened as the brown-haired girl went off on a tangent. "I just want to, um, yes, understand some basic common sense."
"Okay..." Rosanne paused for a few seconds, lowered her gaze, and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Because of my father's situation, I always get a little agitated on similar issues, well, you know. But, to be honest, I have great respect for every gentleman and lady who volunteers to be on night watch."
"I understand, I understand," Klein quickly echoed.
Rosanne blinked her light brown eyes and added:
"My father once said, 'Don't think that becoming more powerful, becoming a higher-sequence Extraordinary, will solve hidden dangers and fight against perils. In fact, quite the opposite, you will encounter increasingly terrible things. When you encounter certain unknown and terrifying beings, madness and death are the only two outcomes. Ha, he sacrificed himself the week after he said that... Klein, don't look at me with pity. I'm living very well now, really well! You should be afraid of these things!'"
"I just want to understand basic common sense..." Klein repeated his answer, unsure whether to laugh or cry.
The captain explained it much more clearly and explicitly than you, and even if I don't become an extraordinary being, I've already encountered something extraordinary...
"Alright," Rosanne said thoughtfully. "I've heard the captain and Old Neil say that because of the decrease and extinction of extraordinary species, high-sequence powerhouses are almost non-existent in this era. To become an Extraordinary is already incredibly impressive! In our city of Tingen and its suburbs, there are hundreds of thousands of people, maybe even more, but we only have about thirty Extraordinary individuals. Hmm, that's my guess... Hmm, I haven't counted those cultists and black wizards living in the shadows..."
Before Klein could speak, she seemed to regain her energy, clenching her fist in front of her chest and saying:
"And of these thirty-odd extraordinary individuals, the majority are Sequence 9! Uh, I seem to have gone off-topic..."
"It's alright, these are common sense things I want to know too." Klein hoped that Rosanne would ramble on as usual and reveal more details.
"In short, to become an Extraordinary is already incredibly impressive, truly impressive!" Rosanne repeated. "The beginning of our church's complete sequence is 'The Sleepless,' Sequence 9 'The Sleepless'!"
Sure enough… Klein nodded almost imperceptibly, listening as Miss Rosanne couldn't help but continue describing:
"As you can probably guess from the name, 'The Sleepless' are people who don't need to sleep at night and only need three to four hours of rest during the day. Wow, I'm so envious... No, I'm not envious at all. Sleep is a gift from the goddess, the happiest thing!"
"Where was I? Oh right, the 'Sleepless Ones' can see through the darkness without light. The deeper the night, the stronger they become. I mean, stronger in every aspect, including their strength, their inspiration, and their thoughts. However, although they can discover unknown dangers hidden in the darkness, they still need to rely on items such as demon-hunting bullets when they encounter monsters that cannot be dealt with by normal means. My father was once a 'Sleepless One'."
Before Klein could ask further, Rosanne continued, "..."
"Next is Sequence 8, 'Midnight Poet,' and above that is Sequence 7, 'Nightmare.'"
Nightmare? Klein suddenly remembered Dunn Smith guiding his dreams and asked, as if confirming:
"team leader?"
"You know?" Miss Rosanne's mouth was almost agape.
"The captain once appeared in my dream..." Klein glanced left and right, then lowered his voice again.
"I understand..." Rosanne suddenly realized and responded softly.
She picked up the coffee cup beside her, took a sip, and then sighed:
"The church only has two people at Sequence 7 in our city of Tingen, and the captain should be one of them. Even in a large diocese like Backlund, he would be a very capable person; some deacons might not even be as good as him!"
"So the captain is that amazing," Klein said with a smile.
To be honest, Dunn Smith's appearance last night was very impressive; I almost instinctively believed he was a very powerful Extraordinary.
"Of course!" Rosanne straightened her back proudly.
Immediately, her thoughts jumped around, and she said with a troubled expression, "I don't know what's above Sequence 7. Maybe only the captain of the entire Night Watch team knows."
"What about the other sequence initiations? The incomplete ones?" Klein changed the subject with satisfaction.
It must be said that Rosanne's description of the "Sleepless One" does indeed fit some of his imagination and expectations of extraordinary individuals, but it is not the kind he hopes to become. His ideal "Sequence 9" should be able to learn and master a great deal of mystical knowledge, laying the foundation for figuring out the reason for his own transmigration and for his future transmigration back.
Rosanne thought for a moment, then sighed:
"I'm not too interested in that. I just know there's more than other churches, after all, the goddess is also the Mother of Secrets... Hmm, there should be two or three kinds, because some members are always cold and scary, and they smell weird. Some members, hmm, I mean old Neil, he knows a lot and knows quite a few interesting magical rituals. Let me think, let me think some more, he once mentioned his Sequence 9 title, which is the name of the potion recipe... Ah right, it's called the Seeker!"
Quite a few interesting magical rituals? Spy? That sounds pretty close to what I'm looking for... Klein felt a slight joy.
"I also know the name of a Sequence 7, the kind with an incomplete pathway!" Rosanne said in a boastful tone, recalling something else from her earlier recollection.
"What is it?" Klein asked with unusual curiosity.
Given the scarcity or even absence of high-sequence strong individuals, shouldn't Sequence 7 already be considered the backbone of the Church?
Rosanne smiled sweetly and replied with a hint of pride:
"A psychic!"
"Ms. Daly?" Klein asked instinctively.
After his initial surprise, he realized that this was not so surprising after all. Only a Sequence 7 powerhouse could achieve such a psychic display as Ms. Daly!
Rosen's eyes widened again, and she spoke in disbelief:
"How...how did you know?"
"I have met Ms. Daly," Klein said without hiding anything.
"Alright," Rosanne said longingly, "If I could become a psychic directly, like Ms. Daly, then I'd be willing to become an extraordinary one too. No, I'll seriously consider it for ten minutes..."
"Yes, Ms. Daly has fulfilled all my expectations of an extraordinary being," Klein echoed with a slightly exaggerated tone.
Having achieved his goal, he chatted with Rosanne for a few more minutes. Seeing that there was no other information, he took off his hat, bowed, and said goodbye before leaving.
Klein walked down the stairs for a few steps, then suddenly stopped and reached into his inner pocket to feel for the banknotes.
Immediately afterwards, he took out the 12-pound banknote, clenched it tightly in his left palm, and then put his hand in his pocket, refusing to let go or pull it out again, while a smile unconsciously appeared on his face.
According to the customs of our food-loving nation, after receiving the money, we must go out and have a good meal!
I'll treat my sister to a nice meal tonight!
