Chapter 12 Another Visit

Chapter 12 Another Visit

"Sis, can we please stop bringing up things we shouldn't talk about..." Klein thought to himself, feeling his head start throbbing again.

The original owner had forgotten a fair amount of knowledge, though not a huge amount. With an interview the day after tomorrow, there was no time to catch up…

Moreover, she's embroiled in bizarre and terrifying events; how could she possibly have the mind to "review" anything...?

After giving his sister a few perfunctory replies, Klein began to pretend to read. Melissa moved a chair over and sat down next to him, doing her homework by the light of the gas lamp.

The atmosphere was peaceful and tranquil. Around 11 p.m., the brother and sister said goodnight to each other and went to bed.

…………

Boom!

dong dong!

A knock on the door woke Klein from his dream.

He glanced at the sunrise outside the window, his mind still a little foggy, and sat up.

Who is it?

What time is it? Why didn't Melissa wake me up?

"I am Dunn Smith," a steady male voice answered from outside the door.

Dunn Smith? I don't know him... Klein shook his head, got out of bed, and walked to the door.

He opened the door and saw the police officer with gray eyes from yesterday.

"What happened?" Klein asked warily.

The gray-eyed officer answered with a serious expression:

"We found a coachman who confirmed that you went to Mr. Welch's residence on the 27th, the day Mr. Welch and Ms. Naya died, and that Mr. Welch paid for your carriage."

Klein paused for a moment, showing no fear or guilt at the thought of his lie being exposed.

Because he wasn't lying at all; on the contrary, he felt that the evidence provided by the grey-eyed officer, Dunn Smith, was exactly what he expected.

On June 27th, the original owner did indeed go to Welch's residence, and committed suicide that very night, just like Welch and Naya!

Klein opened his mouth, a wry smile appearing on his face:

"This is not strong enough evidence to directly prove that I am related to the deaths of Welch and Naya. To be honest, I also want to know what happened and find out what happened to my two poor friends. But, but, I really can't remember. I have almost completely forgotten what I did on the 27th. You may not believe it, but I can only barely guess that I may have been to Welch's residence on the 27th by relying on my own notes."

"Good mental fortitude." Gray-eyed Officer Dunn Smith nodded, showing neither anger nor a smile.

"You should be able to hear my sincerity." Klein looked directly into the other person's eyes.

I'm telling the truth, though only part of it!

Dunn Smith didn't respond immediately, but glanced around the room before slowly saying:

"Mr. Welch lost a revolver, and I think I should be able to find it here, right, Mr. Klein?"

Sure enough... Klein finally figured out the origin of the revolver. His mind raced like lightning, and he made a decision in an instant.

He half-raised his hands, stepped back, and made way, then gestured with his chin towards the bunk bed aisle:

"On the back of the bed board."

He didn't specify which one was below, because normal people wouldn't hide things behind the upper bed frame, as that would make them immediately visible to visitors.

The grey-eyed officer, Dunn, didn't move forward, but twitched his lips and said:

"Nothing to add?"

Klein answered without hesitation:

"have!"

"I woke up in the middle of the night the night before last and found myself slumped over my desk with a revolver next to me and bullets in the corner of the wall. It looked like I had just attempted suicide, but maybe I was inexperienced and had never used a handgun before, or maybe I got scared at the last moment. In any case, the bullets didn't have the desired effect, my head is still intact, and I'm still alive."

"And since then, I've forgotten some things, including what I did and saw at Welch's place on the 27th. I'm not lying, I really don't remember."

In order to clear his name and resolve the strange events that had plagued him, Klein told almost everything, except for the time travel and the "gathering".

In addition, he embellished his wording to ensure that every sentence could stand scrutiny. For example, he did not say that the bullet did not hit the head, but only mentioned that the desired effect was not achieved and that the head remained intact afterward.

To an outsider, these two words seem to convey almost the same meaning, but in reality they are completely different.

After listening quietly, the gray-eyed police officer Dunn spoke slowly:

"This aligns with my predictions and the underlying logic of similar previous events. Of course, I don't know how you survived."

"Just believe me, I don't know how I survived either." Klein breathed a slight sigh of relief.

"But," Dunn said, throwing out a turning point, "my belief is useless. You are now highly suspicious. You must be confirmed by the 'experts' to confirm that you have truly forgotten what happened, or that you did not directly cause the deaths of Mr. Welch and Ms. Naya."

He coughed, and his expression turned serious.

"Mr. Klein, please cooperate with the investigation and come with us to the police station. This will probably take two to three days, if you are sure you have no problems."

"The experts have arrived?" Klein asked blankly.

Didn't we say in a couple of days?

"She came earlier than we expected." Dunn turned to the side, gesturing for Klein to leave.

"I'll leave a note," Klein requested.

Benson was still away on a business trip, and Melissa was at school, so he could only leave a message telling them that he was involved in something with Welch and that they shouldn't worry.

Dunn nodded nonchalantly:

"Can."

Klein returned to his desk, took out some paper to write on, and began to think about what to do next.

To be honest, he really didn't want to see that expert, after all, he was hiding an even bigger secret.

In places with seven major churches, and given that the supposed "predecessor" Emperor Roselle was assassinated, "time travel" would most likely require going to the Inquisition or the Court of Arbitration!

However, without weapons, fighting skills, or superhuman strength, he was no match for a professional police officer. Moreover, several of Dunn's subordinates were standing in the dim light outside the door.

They drew their guns and fired a volley, thus ending their own lives!

"Phew, let's take it one step at a time." Klein left a note, grabbed the key, and followed Dunn out of the room.

In the dimly lit corridor, four police officers dressed in black with white checks stood on both sides, on high alert.

Clatter, clatter, clatter, Klein followed Dunn down the wooden stairs, step by step, the sound of creaking occasionally audible.

A four-wheeled carriage with a single horse was parked outside the apartment. The side of the carriage was painted with the police system logo of "crossed swords surrounding a crown". The surroundings were as lively, crowded and noisy as every morning before.

"Go up first," Dunn gestured to Klein.

Just as Klein was about to take a step, a vendor selling oysters suddenly grabbed a customer and accused him of being a thief.

The two sides started fighting, startling the horses and causing chaos in the surrounding area.

opportunity!

Without thinking twice, Klein bent down and rushed forward, bursting into the crowd.

He was pushed and shoved, dodging and running frantically toward the other end of the street.

In the current situation, in order to avoid "meeting" the experts, the only option is to go to the docks outside the city, take a boat down the Tasok River, and escape to the capital, Backlund, where there is a large population and it is easier to hide.

Of course, you can also hitch a ride on a steam train eastward to the nearest port of Enmat, then take the sea route to Pritz, and finally head to Backlund.

Before long, Klein ran to the street corner and turned into Iron Cross Street, where several carriages available for hire were parked.

"To the docks outside the city." Klein pushed off and jumped onto one of the vehicles.

He had a clear plan: he would deliberately mislead the pursuing police, and once the carriage had traveled a certain distance, he would jump off!

"Okay." The driver pulled on the reins.

Clatter, clatter, the carriage drove away from Iron Cross Street.

Just as Klein was about to jump out of the carriage, he suddenly realized that the carriage had turned onto another road, which was not the road leading out of the city!

"Where are you going?" Klein asked, startled.

"To Welch's residence..." the coachman replied in a flat tone.

What? Klein was stunned when the coachman turned around, revealing deep, cold gray eyes—it was none other than Officer Dunn Smith!

"You!" Klein was terrified. Suddenly, he felt dizzy and sat up abruptly.

He sat up? Klein looked left and right in confusion and found that the red moon was shining brightly outside the window and the room was covered with "light gauze".

He reached up and touched his forehead; it was damp and cold, covered in cold sweat. He felt the same way on his back.

"I had a nightmare..." Klein slowly exhaled. "Thank goodness..."

He found it strange that he was quite lucid in his dream and able to think calmly.

After calming down a bit, Klein picked up his pocket watch and glanced at it. He realized it was only a little past two in the morning, so he quietly got out of bed and planned to go to the public restroom to wash his face and take care of his bloated stomach.

He turned the door open and came to the dimly lit corridor. In the faint moonlight, he approached the public washroom with very light steps.

Suddenly, he saw a figure standing in front of the window at the end of the corridor.

The figure was dressed in a black, styled outfit that was shorter than a robe but longer than a formal suit.

The figure was half-integrated into the darkness, bathed in the cool, crimson moonlight.

The figure slowly turned around, its eyes deep, dark, and indifferent.

Dunn Smith!
