Chapter 390 Death Knell: First Question, Then Question

This dark magic is similar in nature to runes' Devouring Magic and Fiendfyre.

Once it enters the human body, it breaks down parts such as the brain, converting them into more dark magic. It then directly controls the host to devour other living creatures, spreading the dark magic while also converting the flesh and blood it ingests into even more dark magic.

Rune has not yet seen how powerful the zombies become after acquiring a large amount of flesh and blood, but he imagines that this dark magic will be used to strengthen their bodies.

After all, they've lost their minds; they couldn't possibly be chanting spells.

But since it's related to magic, who exactly is so heartless as to spread this kind of magic in Cleveland?

"I suspect Cleveland is already teeming with these zombies." Deathstroke glanced at the shredded flesh beside him and scoffed. "Besides, humans have an ignition point of at least 250 degrees Celsius. I think simply setting fires might not be enough to clear out these undead creatures."

The human body is mainly composed of water and organic matter. Under extreme high temperatures, after dehydration and carbonization of organic matter, the oil that seeps out can be successfully burned as fuel. If you want to burn a corpse to ashes, the temperature must be raised to at least 760 degrees Celsius and maintained for at least one and a half hours.

This doesn't even take into account the effect of the magic on the ignition point.

Deathstroke, who had never witnessed the power of Rune, was still questioning it repeatedly. But Jester and Harley Quinn had already followed Rune and moved forward first.

"My friend, hurry up and catch up, there's going to be a good show soon!" The clown danced around and laughed heartily, eagerly anticipating Rune's method of eliminating the zombies.

Deathstroke had no choice but to cautiously follow Rune, constantly looking around. Little did he know that Rune had already used his spreading dark magic to explore everything ahead.

The monk snapped his fingers.

Then, a small wisp of red and black flame seeped from Rune's fingertips. The powerful dark magic called Fiendfire, at this moment, behaved like a harmless little flame.

As the sounds of the clown and Harley Quinn's playful antics spread, a large number of zombies rushed over. Upon seeing the four living people, they immediately charged greedily towards them.

These zombies had no other thoughts, only hunting instincts; their melted brains didn't allow them to think too much. However, that small wisp of flame arrived at the feet of a running zombie ahead of time.

When the flames touched the zombie's body, a dim rune suddenly appeared on the grayish-white skin and flickered for a moment, but was quickly consumed by the Fiery Blaze.

Rune narrowed his eyes upon seeing this.

The first to rush in would undoubtedly be the zombies that had eaten the most humans and were the fastest, so the dark magic within them would be stronger. However, contrary to Rune's prediction, the dark magic did not immediately strengthen their bodies.

Or rather, at least most of the dark magic didn't immediately strengthen the body, but instead formed runes on the body's surface.

It seems that this incident was not a natural disaster, but a man-made one.

Driven by a being of the Heavenly Father level, the Fiendfire Curse was far more powerful than ordinary people could imagine. After devouring the first zombie, this seemingly harmless Fiendfire instantly revealed its terrifying nature.

It began to multiply rapidly, spreading at an unimaginable speed, and quickly transforming into countless mythical creatures that existed only in legends: hydras, pegasi, unicorns, chimeras—

The undead, sustained by dark magic, seemed to have encountered their natural enemy. They were devoured one by one by the mythical creatures formed from flames, and were quickly consumed.

However, these zombies seemed to have no fear, rushing forward one after another, trying to break through the protective flames surrounding Rune, but without exception they were all quickly burned to ashes.

A few zombies managed to hold out for a few more seconds, but after the purplish-black runes on their bodies disappeared, they became food for the Fiendfire.

"Wow!" Harley Quinn exclaimed, looking at the spectacular sight before her. "It's so beautiful! Can I touch them?"

Harley didn't feel any heat, so she asked, but the clown had already started using his stick. He picked up a branch from the roadside and walked over to a zombie that had been burned to a head.

bump!

The clown used all his strength to smash the zombie's head away, then fixed his gaze on the spot where the head had landed.

Snapped!

The head finally hit the ground, and the clown laughed loudly, "Look, a home run!"

"My little Pudding, this is clearly a hole-in-one!" Harley Quinn was inspired by the Joker and wanted to try it too. So she took out the wand that Rune had enchanted for her and searched around for the same zombie heads. She wanted to play with the Joker too.

Deathstroke didn't watch these two lunatics go crazy. Even in Gotham, few people could understand the thought process of these two guys. Moreover, he stared wide-eyed with his remaining eye beneath his mask.

He truly hadn't expected this boy to be so strong.

After recovering from the shock, Deathstroke took a deep breath and looked at Rune. "Can they... still be saved?"

Upon hearing this, Rune turned to look at Deathstroke.

"If you were from another universe, I would carefully consider the meaning behind your words—" Rune said with a strange expression, "but if you're from this universe—I think you really do want to save those ordinary people, right?"

As he spoke, he took a zombie head from Harley's feet, and ignoring Harley's accusations, broke it open and showed it to Deathstroke.

The contents of this resemble tofu pudding that has been overcooked with broth and soy sauce but hasn't been stirred properly.

"Look, even the brain has been mostly melted away." Rune said, returning the zombie's head to its original state. When the head was back at Harley's feet, it returned to its original, intact state.

"That's more like it!" Harley pouted, then swung the club hard.

Bang!

The Joker laughed and clapped, but when he saw Harley's ball fly farther than his own, he immediately went back to searching for burning zombie heads. He had to prove himself as the leader of the Joker gang!

If Rune knew, he would definitely make the clown give up. Harley was using a staff that she had enchanted herself, something with an enchantment that enhances the user's power.

"Perhaps there are still some survivors in the city—" Although Rune's previous words revealed a great deal of information, Deathstroke did not stop asking questions.

"These Fiends are under my control, and my command to them is to burn away everything that carries dark magic." Rune patted Deathstroke's armor; to be honest, Rune quite liked Deathstroke.

With a dark and sorrowful past, intelligent yet principled, possessing formidable combat abilities, loving his children, and occasionally saving the world—who wouldn't love the morally ambiguous Deathstroke?

Rune's order would certainly burn some artifacts or books in Cleveland, and might even accidentally injure some mages, but under the current circumstances, he couldn't care less about causing harm.

"Alright," Deathstroke conceded.

The fire then began to spread toward Cleveland at a visible speed, and the game between the clown and Harley Quinn unexpectedly accelerated the spread of the Fiendfire.

However, while Harley was hitting the zombie's head, she first spotted a huge dark shadow.

"Hey, Rune, Deathstroke, look what that is!" Harley blinked. To be honest, when she saw the shadowy figure clearly, she was unusually disgusted.

So she has to disgust Rune and Deathstroke.

As for the clown?

She's not that heartless.
