Chapter 326 A PhD is merely the threshold to meeting us
This was a small matter, of course, and Rune nodded in agreement. He then made a slit in the void, and instantly, a large number of Silka cigarettes rolled out from it.
"You can smoke these first," Rune said, pointing to the cigarettes Logan was smoking [the kind only sissies smoke]. "How many cigars do you have left?"
"That'll last me a while, you don't need to rush." Logan frowned as he looked at the cigarettes. "And, you've learned to smoke?"
Rune shook his head, of course. At his level now, even smoking wouldn't give him the pleasure of nicotine stimulating the release of dopamine in his brain: "It's just that I have a—? friend, he likes to smoke this kind of cigarette."
He hesitated for a long time before finally saying the word "friend".
"Hmph." Logan curled his lip. "Anyone who smokes this kind of cigarette must be a sissy."
Rune remained noncommittal. In a sense, Constantine was a tough guy. Although he was bisexual and ruthless, he could always be the most reliable support in the team when it mattered most. Of course, the definition of "when it matters most" was in Constantine's hands.
"There's one more thing," Logan added, "Could you find me an opportunity to—do something like that?"
"What is it?"
Faced with Rune's doubts, Logan simply stretched out his hands, and with a swish, two Adamantium alloy claws emerged.
Good heavens, I almost forgot Logan's nature. War flows in his blood. Although Rune saved him from the apocalypse, he's a restless guy. The peaceful life during this time is a long-awaited relaxation for others, but it's torture for Logan.
He certainly tried to fight villains or heroes like the Sandman who couldn't be killed, but—well, Logan didn't really enjoy it. Hearing that Rune could travel to other dimensions, Logan approached him, hoping the young man could find him some work.
"Aren't you worried I'll make you do bad things?" Rune raised an eyebrow.
"Would you?" Logan countered. In his eyes, although Rune was ruthless, he was still a good kid, so Logan wasn't worried about this at all.
Rune chuckled and shook his head, then left. His smile made Logan uneasy; would he really make him do dirty work?
Doing dirty work is fine with him; he even wanted to kill Genesis before he became Apocalypse, when he was still a child! But he can't do purely evil things!
But by the time he realized what was happening, Rune had already entered the teaching building.
Inside the classroom, Professor X was teaching a psychology class. He was a top student; Charles graduated from Harvard University at 16 and also attended Oxford and Columbia Universities, earning multiple doctoral degrees in biology, psychology, and other fields. It could be said that in some superhero circles, a doctorate is merely the entry-level requirement for membership.
As an outsider, Rune waited patiently outside the door until the break between classes before going inside. Li Qianhuan, who was in the classroom, saw Rune and excitedly waved to him. Although their first meeting had been unpleasant, she was still grateful for everything Rune had done for mutants.
Rune smiled and waved in response, but he had already planned how to use her teacher. A warrior with strong offensive capabilities and almost infinite regeneration could be used in many ways.
After learning of Rune's purpose, Professor X deliberately brought Rune to his office. This principal did not live a luxurious life; on the contrary, he kept everything simple.
"I thought your office air conditioning would be really cold," Rune said with a smile. Professor X sighed at this.
"I certainly won't turn it too cold, but some people in the dorms will, and they always manage to catch a cold," Charles said, feigning concern. "But we're short on medicine here, so it would be great if someone could help us."
Charles then gave Rune a deliberately wary look.
Although Charles was asking him for something, Rune felt no resentment whatsoever; on the contrary, he found the old man both respectable and endearing.
Actually, Logan was surprisingly gentle. Upon seeing me, he immediately put out his cigar, afraid of inhaling secondhand smoke.
"Okay, I'll bring you some next time," Rune said with a smile.
Charles smiled and nodded, satisfied with the answer, and then got straight to the point.
"As you said, superheroes and supervillains do indeed have their own small groups," Charles confirmed Rune's conjecture. "It's just that before I left, they hadn't formed any large-scale organizations, but I think that over the past few years, many forgotten ones have truly become dust in history, and this phenomenon might prompt the emergence of large-scale organizations—"
"This is not good news for me—"
Charles nodded; he agreed with Rune's point of view.
"Have you ever seen anyone or anything mass-producing servants for the military?" Rune asked, trying to find out who was behind the Boys world, or at least narrow down the scope. He wasn't used to rushing in without knowing who his opponent was.
This statement clearly startled Charles for a moment, then he nodded: "Now that you mention it, I seem to—I seem to have seen something that might be a military before. Brainiac, Magneto, Ultron, Skynet, and Umbrella—these organizations or individuals should be mass-producing armies. I used to think they were part of their world—"
Are there many organizations or villains like this?
Charles nodded: "There are many. The Forsaken not only invade other worlds in an attempt to become normal again, but they also attack each other for various reasons, such as the simplest debate between good and evil, or to increase their influence in meetings. Apart from the time when a few important figures organize meetings, the Forsaken are waging war almost every day."
Charles then sighed.
"Many of my old buddies died like this." As Professor X said this, tears welled up in his eyes. Rune didn't know what he had been through, but the very fact that made him decide to try his luck in another Marvel universe might have already foreshadowed the fate of his old buddies.
The atmosphere became unusually heavy, and Rune had to steer the conversation in another direction: "By the way, I recently gained some telepathic abilities, but I can't control them perfectly on my own. Could you teach me some things about this?"
"Of course, of course, my friend," Charles laughed, though a hint of sadness lingered in his eyes.
