American comic book police officer survival manual
Chapter 9 This Damn Character Design
"call...."
Late at night, a physically and mentally exhausted Lucius walked out of Gordon's office, unable to understand why the sheriff could maintain such enthusiasm, insisting on investigating the possible whereabouts of contraband even knowing that Batman was helping him.
Given Lucius's personality of not wanting to cause trouble, since the Penguin and Batman were watching this matter from behind, they, as ordinary police officers on a fixed salary, could just do a token job.
"I've never seen any amazing achievements by the police in American comics... so they can just slack off."
Occasionally catching a petty thief or arresting a few wayward thugs with no connections is enough to justify wearing this police uniform.
Shaking his head, which was slightly flushed from overthinking, and ignoring the strange looks from his colleagues, Lucius went straight to the police station entrance and pushed the door open.
With the various bonuses reported this time, my living expenses should be covered in the short term...
"Um?"
Sensing a fierce aura, Lucius's expression turned serious, and he abruptly stopped in his tracks.
The officer straightened his stiff neck slightly and looked up at the street in the dead of night.
Outside the Gotham Police Department late at night, dozens of gang members were gathered together!
These gang members, who bore injuries to varying degrees, were the same group of escorts that Lucius had arrested on Third Avenue today!
They stood solemnly on the dark street, each with a blank expression, silently looking at the entrance of the police station and at the police officer who was already sweating profusely!
At the very front of this group of gang members stood a burly man nearly two meters tall!
His bulging muscles pushed up the originally well-fitting black suit, making this tall and burly man look like the Hulk with black skin. Just standing in the middle of the street, he could give those around him an extremely powerful sense of oppression!
"Mr. Lucius, we haven't got the wrong person, have we?"
The deep, booming voice that came from the burly man forced Lucius, who had intended to silently retreat back into the police station, to stop in his tracks.
Faced with this horrifying scene, Lucius instinctively reached for the weapon in his pocket.
"What brings you all here?"
Having acknowledged his identity, Lucius turned his head slightly, only to find that many of his colleagues in the police station were completely unresponsive to the situation on the street.
They even deliberately avoided Lucius's gaze, giving him an expression that said, "I didn't see anything."
Right outside the police station, separated only by a wall, these officers displayed such indifference, as if everything that was happening was none of their concern...
Now, Lucius seemed to understand a little better what an embarrassing situation Sheriff Gordon had faced...
"You are Lucius."
As he asked again, the burly man who had spoken glanced at the expressions of his other companions.
Having confirmed the identity of the person in front of them, after a one-second pause, the numerous gang members waiting outside the police station simultaneously bowed their heads and bent over.
In the silent night, the unanimous bow of this group of dangerous individuals not only froze Lucius's right hand at his waist, but also left all his colleagues in the police station, who were secretly watching, dumbfounded.
"The boss said he wanted to thank you for your help this time, otherwise our losses would have been even greater."
After expressing his gratitude, the burly man extended a hand the size of an adult's head and shook hands with Lucius.
Without this officer's timely intervention, the gang would have suffered heavy losses and lost a large number of combat members.
Realizing that the other party did not come with malicious intent, Lucius breathed a sigh of relief and slowly relaxed, but some doubts still arose in his mind.
Why bow?
"We heard that you have Asian and Roman ancestry, so we expressed our gratitude in this way, and we hope you will accept it."
The burly man withdrew his hand and revealed information that even Lucius himself was unaware of.
Asian? Rome?
Thinking of some terrible truths, Lucius's eyes narrowed, and his relaxed expression tightened again.
These people... investigated their backgrounds and even their families within twelve hours? What an incredible intelligence system!
Looking at the numerous gang members surrounding him and the police station, Lucius felt somewhat depressed.
No, this is definitely not just a thank you... If all of this was done by the Penguin, then it's also a blatant act of defiance...
Frowning as he watched the gangsters surrounding the police station slowly retreat, Lucius stood frozen at the station entrance, his emotions a jumble of complex feelings.
"The Emperor of Gotham..."
The Penguin, the seemingly insignificant villain, is actually the true underground king who wields immense power in this city of sin.
Having realized he was just a new Gotham police officer, and after learning he possessed certain abilities, was he giving himself a "gentle" reminder in this way?
"Even Chris respects you so much... Now you're a big shot in Gotham City, man, with connections to both the legal and illegal worlds."
A slightly teasing voice came from behind, causing Lucius to turn around.
He was a slightly overweight police officer who looked somewhat gloomy and roguish. The shadow of his black hat brim almost completely covered the upper half of his face, adding to the sinister look of the man who already seemed somewhat malicious.
Just as Lucius was wondering what was going on, the officer introduced himself: "Harvey Block, perhaps your future partner."
"Brock?"
This guy doesn't look like a good person.
Does my future partner have to be this person?
With a hint of resentment, Lucius looked towards the police station, only to find that his colleagues were all avoiding his gaze.
If the previous "colleagues" looked at Lucius with numbness, pity, and sorrow, believing that he would fall victim to the gang's oppression, then...
Now, the officers' faces clearly showed their awe of Lucius, obviously regarding him as a distinguished guest of the Penguin, someone with considerable influence in Gotham...
Following Lucius's gaze, Brock leaned against the fence and spoke quite naturally: "See, it's clear I'm not the only one who thinks this way..."
Being valued by both Sheriff Gordon and the Penguin will undoubtedly boost Lucius's reputation within the police department.
"Ha...then I really should feel honored."
Lucius grinned, clearly not wanting to be targeted by multiple parties.
Survive, then grow stronger—that's the most important thing.
Watching Lucius's retreating figure, Brock's eyes held a hint of wariness:
"When I returned from investigating the injured at the hospital, a beautiful woman said she wanted to meet you. Is she someone you're pursuing in Gotham?"
How could a playboy who has seduced countless female colleagues in Manhattan possibly be a diligent and honest police officer?
Sheriff Gordon seems to have trusted the wrong person, which worries Brock greatly.
Therefore, he needed to make sure which side this highly anticipated new police officer was on.
"A beautiful lady?"
Who? Pamela?
He detected a hint of doubt in that flippant tone, and the words Lucius wanted to say caught in his throat as his mind raced...
Not right.
Why is this guy, who seems to have all sorts of problems, also paying attention to my information? Is he a gang member too?
Damn it! Why does everyone in Gotham like to do background checks?! Is it already common knowledge that I like to 'play the field'?!
Gritting his teeth, Lucius glanced at his other colleagues and found that these lazy bums were all listening intently, clearly very concerned about his private affairs!
"Fuck!"
Lucius cursed under his breath, his mood turning sour.
In order to maintain his identity, he now seems to have to play the role he once had to to avoid arousing suspicion from the gang.
This guy looks like a corrupt cop no matter how you look at him. He might be an undercover agent sent by some gang to gather information from your side!
Time travel might be extremely rare in other worlds, but in American comics, which have various 'parallel worlds,' it's by no means a rare thing!
If they find out about their identities, the police might let it go, but those gangsters are capable of anything...
"Yes, I'm going to check on that female college student...maybe we can even develop a relationship..."
While inwardly cursing his predecessor's indiscretions in his private life, Lucius, with his hands in his pockets, composed himself and revealed a slightly awkward, wicked smile.
"Heh, just as I expected..."
With a cold snort in their hearts, Brock and the other officers looked at Lucius with a hint of jealousy.
This guy is so ridiculously handsome, how come girls fall for him everywhere he goes!
