Chapter 56 The Road to Promotion
"Huh? Wasn't that Miss Selena who just walked by...?"
As Pamela left Arkham with Lucius, she glanced back at the somewhat familiar figure.
Who is Selena?
Back in the car, Lucius pressed for more information.
Pamela doesn't have many friends, so how come there's suddenly another one he doesn't know?
"It's the lady who came to our room yesterday."
After being given the antidote last night, the woman hugged her knees and remained motionless, her beautiful body twitching from time to time, which made Pamela frown repeatedly.
Aside from a few basic self-introductions, the woman didn't talk to Pamela about anything else, only her face was flushed and she occasionally let out some strange breathing sounds.
She had intended to take care of Selena, who was not in good spirits, but Selena also showed strong resistance to her, seemingly not wanting anyone to touch her body.
Having no other choice, Pamela secretly followed Lucius, not wanting him to encounter any danger.
"I originally thought that after she took the medicine, she wouldn't need further treatment, but her mental state seems to be very poor."
"Ah...it was delayed for a while after all..."
Gripping the steering wheel, Lucius felt a pang of pity for the woman struggling so fiercely.
The thought that Scarecrow had given his ward special "care" made him realize that the woman might have some psychological trauma.
"By the way, what's next..."
The phone rang, interrupting Lucius's words.
Pamela picked up the phone and held it to Lucius's ear.
"Hey... Sheriff Gordon? What's up?"
"Lucius, how are you feeling? Well, you've seen your Medal of Honor, haven't you? Scarecrow, the mastermind behind the Fear Gas attack, has been sent to Arkham by Batman. We can finally close one case."
It was easy to tell that Sheriff Gordon was genuinely relieved about Scarecrow's arrest.
Harvey, now the prosecutor, is gathering evidence to sentence Scarecrow to several hundred years in prison, sealing him away in Arkham forever so he can stop causing trouble in Gotham.
With the Gotham Police Department currently swamped with cases, this achievement, even with Batman's help, is enough to give everyone in the department a brief respite.
"But what I really want to say isn't that... Lucius, you're still a regular police officer, right?"
While at the police station, Gordon flipped through the officers' files on his desk, gaining a general understanding of Lucius's past experiences.
This officer was registered in Manhattan, New York, and was transferred to Gotham City shortly after starting work. His total service time was less than a year.
Therefore, Lucius is currently only a junior officer, the lowest rank in the police department, barely better than a trainee officer.
"Now that I have reported your information and achievements, Mayor Hill believes you are ready for promotion."
"Promotion?!"
Lucius abruptly turned the steering wheel and stopped at the side of the road, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"But isn't my working age completely insufficient?"
In fact, Lucius had already secretly inquired about the promotion through some colleagues.
It takes at least three to five years of work experience for an ordinary police officer to be promoted to senior officer.
Even if there are some special achievements that can lead to more lenient review during promotion, certain basic requirements "in principle" cannot be changed.
To break these principles, approval from a high-ranking police chief or review committee within the police system is required.
As far as Lucius knew, even Sheriff Gordon couldn't easily interfere with the review committee, the agency that controlled the promotion of police officers, which seemed to be under the control of the mayor.
The bad news is that Mayor Hill is a stereotypical American politician: corrupt, incompetent, and even strongly opposed to Batman's existence... Perhaps Batman's anti-crime campaign is too broad and has harmed his interests.
Good news: Mayor Hill is quite greedy and has close ties to the Falcone family and the Penguins. This means that if Lucius has the money, he can easily establish these connections...
Unfortunately, I have no money right now.
"Your police service is not long enough, but I reported your information and your contributions during this period to the committee. In the end, the mayor made the final decision that you can start the promotion process ahead of schedule."
After glancing at Mayor Hill's high-sounding comments, Sheriff Gordon twitched his beard, a hint of disgust in his eyes.
In his view, the reason the mayor specifically approved it was either because the gang wanted to use this method to win over Lucius, this outstanding police officer, or because the astute mayor had noticed Lucius's impressive background.
In short, Mayor Hill had absolutely no need to use his position to specially approve the promotion of a senior police officer; such an action would inevitably have a politically charged element of seeking publicity.
"In any case, your credentials seem sufficient for promotion now; the only problem is... insufficient experience."
Holding Lucius's evaluation form, Sheriff Gordon was somewhat troubled.
He also hoped that Lucius could be promoted, but the officer's working hours were limited, and he had not even completed a single case since arriving in Gotham.
Of course, the jury also took note of the fact that Lucius had played a significant role in many cases.
However, apart from the Scarecrow case where he was arrested by Batman, the other cases Lucius was involved in are still unresolved and cannot be used as a basis for promotion.
"In other words, you need to break through at least one case as a key participant. There are many unsolved cases in Gotham. You can consider this matter after you finish your leave."
When the promotion is approved, Lucius will have to return to his original registered area in Manhattan to make some information changes. Sheriff Gordon is reluctant to part with this capable officer, especially during these turbulent times.
"I see."
Finally, he had a chance to be promoted. Lucius took out the manual and looked at the two abilities at the top.
Firearms Application - 100-Point Beginner
Botany - 100 Points to Get Started
From a certain day onwards, they got stuck at 100 points, unable to continue growing, and seemingly unable to advance to the next stage.
It seems... a promotion is necessary now.
"Sheriff Gordon, could you send me all the information on any unsolved cases in the department? Maybe I can solve one someday?"
As Lucius set off again, many ideas began to form in his mind.
As long as you avoid those dangerous guys, there are so many cases in Gotham, a place full of talented people, that you can always handle.
"That's fine. Take good care of your injury. You can start the promotion process whenever you want. I hope you can return to the police station soon."
"Um."
