Chapter 40 People Who Have Been Rained On
"How is it? Is our Officer Lucius under guard? Why are you standing outside?"
The large figure in front of her suddenly stepped forward and blocked her way, making Harlin, who was in a good mood, realize that something was wrong.
"There are already people in the ward. I think our Mr. Lucius needs to rest..."
With an awkward smile on his lips, Brock knew perfectly well that Lucius was now awake, having seen the doctor enter the ward earlier.
Imagine a conscious man facing two women who might be attracted to him... Brock couldn't even imagine how cruel it would be if this happened to a patient.
Having vaguely heard about Dr. Harleen's character at Arkham Asylum, and as Lucius's good colleague, Brock felt it was necessary to stand in for his brother who was trying to save his life.
Even if all of this was brought about by that damned playboy himself.
That's certainly true from Brock's perspective.
"Rest at home?"
Harleen raised her beautiful eyebrows slightly, and seeing Brock's nervousness, she seemed to realize something.
"Hey, isn't it a bit too risky to make the patient do some strenuous exercise?"
Wearing elegant high heels, Harlin politely took a step back, already guessing who else was in the ward.
"No, no, no, that kind of thing hasn't happened yet."
Unexpectedly, this beautiful lady was so bold in her words. While surprised by her personality, Brock was also worried for his colleagues in the room.
"What's wrong with me going in? You know, many patients may develop post-traumatic stress disorder after experiencing an explosion. I'm doing this for the patients' mental health."
The doctor, with his well-reasoned arguments, easily got the old policeman under his thumb; when it comes to professional expertise, Harleen fears no one.
"I am Officer Lucius's psychiatrist, and it is my duty to ensure the mental well-being of my clients. Please do not prevent me from seeing my patients, so as not to damage my future reputation in the medical field."
"OK...but please remain calm and don't make a scene."
Unable to stop his opponent despite his best efforts, Brock could only step aside and silently wish Lucius good luck.
With a proud tilt of her jade-like chin, Harleen passed through Brock's checkpoint without any trouble and arrived at Lucius's ward.
"Alright, that's all for now. Your injury will heal quickly... Hmm? And you are?"
The doctor in the ward was visibly surprised to find another woman in a white coat in the room.
"I am Mr. Lucius's psychiatrist. I am here to ensure his mental health after his injury. It is an honor to meet you."
Harlein?
What did she do here? Is Sheriff Gordon really that thoughtful? He even brought along a psychiatrist?
Upon seeing the tall and beautiful psychologist arrive, a puzzled Lucius turned his head, only to find that the girl beside him was just as bewildered as he was.
Watching the two doctors complete the basic handover of the patient's condition, Lucius immediately sensed something was wrong as Harleen slowly approached.
"We meet again, Mr. Lucius. I didn't expect you to be involved in a major case so quickly again. However, it seems your luck isn't as good as it was last time."
As Harleen slowly sat down on the other side of Lucius, she greeted him, but her gaze lingered on Pamela with a hint of confusion.
Strange, why does she feel that this girl has changed a lot after only one day apart?
Having worked at Arkham Asylum for many years, Harleen, with her keen intuition, sensed an unspeakable danger emanating from Pamela... just like many of the patients she had encountered before.
Just a few days ago, this girl was timid and hesitant, even hesitant to take the initiative to approach her beloved.
Now, however, she inexplicably gives Harleen a terrifying sense of crisis... It seems that the girl's existence is just as terrifying as some of the madmen in Arkham.
The sudden change caused Harleen to slightly alter her opinion of Pamela.
Perhaps she has decided to change, so her personality has undergone some subtle changes.
"Would you mind taking a little test, officer?"
Temporarily setting aside her wariness of Pamela, Harleen looked at Lucius on the hospital bed, her eyes brimming with interest.
Before Lucius could respond, Pamela spoke up and stopped Harleen, who was trying to do something.
"The doctor said Lucius should rest... he's still very weak."
"Oh?"
Looking at Pamela's eyes, which held a hint of hostility, Harleen was certain that this seemingly harmless female college student had indeed undergone a dramatic transformation...
Was all of this caused by myself?
Just because of that conversation?
Thinking of this, the fiery psychiatrist couldn't help but look at the man on the hospital bed with a mournful expression.
Because of her momentary kindness, she created a real adversary for herself.
"Okay, if that's the case, let the patient rest first, and we can talk, shall we?"
Harleen winked at Pamela and decided to wait and see for a while longer.
After all, the opponent seems to have suddenly become stronger, so the battle plan needs to be changed slightly.
"sure."
......
"How far have things progressed for you?"
Harleen led Pamela out of the ward and into the garden, a place meant for relaxation. With her hands in her pockets, she asked bluntly.
"us..."
The stubborn girl's tone turned somber, and she was unable to respond to this tricky question.
Seeing the worry on Pamela's face, Harleen's expression changed:
"What? No progress?!"
Good heavens, hasn't she already started to change? Why is she still stuck at this stage?
Seeing the female college student's demeanor inexplicably plummet and her seemingly reverting to being a pushover, Harlin, a psychologist, suddenly felt annoyed and frustrated.
"Didn't I already teach you how to do it?"
Seeing the girl's timid expression always inexplicably annoyed Harleen.
From a malicious perspective, she should perhaps be thankful for Pamela's weakness and remain indifferent to the girl's eccentric personality, so that Lucius can gradually come to her side.
But looking at the bookworm in front of her, Harleen could always see some shadows of her past in her, making this psychologist with unspeakable experiences clench her fists and feel indignant.
"You don't need to be so timid. You can boldly express your feelings and pursue your own happiness."
"I can't..."
"No! You can! Even if you start with something simpler, you can absolutely express your ideas!"
When faced with Pamela, who seemed to be stuck at some point, Harlin shouted without hesitation.
"You should express your own thoughts, instead of being controlled by your own cowardice and timidity."
Why...?
Why do you know so much?
Why do you want to help me?
Not understanding why Harleen would tell her all this, Pamela looked up at the inexplicably indignant psychiatrist.
"...It's nothing."
Realizing she had lost control of her emotions, Harlin adjusted her glasses and calmed her tone.
"I just don't dislike you."
"..."
Pamela saw such an embarrassed expression on Miss Harleen's face for the first time and instantly understood something.
"Miss Harleen? Were your grades always very good?"
"...Hmph, of course."
