22 - Film Festival
With Professor Anderson's praise, the few people sitting in the office smiled happily. Professor Anderson also smiled happily, and he was sincerely happy for his compatriots.
"How about it, do you have any plans for Christmas? Now that the film is finished, are you going back to the farm?"
Seeing the teacher ask him about Christmas arrangements, he thought for a while and said:
"Well, I'm going back to the farm for Christmas. My mom has called me a few times. I always tell her that she's busy with work and never go back. I think she'll drive to Los Angeles and smash all my copies of film."
Listening to him teasing his mother, everyone smiled kindly. This country's family will always be everyone's first belief. Jimmy suddenly looked at Wayne, and until he saw him paying attention to his eyes, he spoke:
"Congratulations, to be honest, I thought you were filming those bloody things that couldn't see the plot clearly. Don't worry, I will help contact the film company when I go back to discuss the issue of distribution. But don't have too much hope. You know, even if I use some company relationships, I may not be able to invite many people to watch your film."
"It's okay, Jimmy, do your best to do it, I'm prepared."
He didn't want much, so he called Jimmy to give him confidence and let him do his best to recruit people. Otherwise, with his own luck, there might be few people coming to see him.
"Okay, just be prepared. January is about to begin, and it's not a few days away from the St. Dennis Film Festival. You have to give yourself a price in your heart, so that you can't get a company to be interested in the bid, which is too far from your heart."
Jimmy reminded him carefully that Jimmy was afraid that he would set too high a price in his heart. Jimmy knew what the film distribution industry was. They were in the absolute upstream of this industry and survived by sucking the blood of the production company.
When Wayne heard his reminder, he didn't take it too seriously. The bottom line he set for himself was lower than everyone thought. If there was really no company willing to pay a high price in the end, in order to send the film to the theater, he was really not afraid of losing money and selling it. The first one was mainly to promote himself and prove himself.
After the campus screening, he finally got rid of his workaholic character. Before Christmas, he rolled out the bed sheets with Naomi for a few days, slept well in the apartment for two days, and drove back to the farm.
On January 17, 1991, Wayne and Luke, carrying copies of the video, flew to Park City, Utah, USA. Tomorrow, on January 18, the St. Dennis Film Festival will officially begin here.
The Sundance Film Festival, or the "Dance Film Festival", is specially designed for independent filmmakers, and its influence has become increasingly greater in recent years. It aims to encourage low-cost, independent films, and express a completely different purpose from Hollywood films. The Sundance Film Festival in the United States is held by the Sundance Institute, which consists of 25 members.
In 1981, Robert Redford was determined to enhance the artistic vitality of American film diversity. He discussed plans with his colleagues and friends in Sundance, Utah, and founded the Sundance Institute, dedicated to supporting and cultivating new film screenwriters and film directors; supporting and helping new dramas and documentaries to participate in domestic and international film festivals in the United States.
This place has been the best platform for all independent filmmakers to promote themselves in recent years, and Wayne's purpose is this. At 2 pm, Wayne and Luke rushed from the airport to the booked hotel, but did not dare to stop for a moment. They put down their luggage and went directly to the rental screening room.
With Professor Anderson, he helped Wayne get invitation letters and screening rooms. Although he did not participate in the competition unit, it was great to have a better room.
Just like Luke and the medium-sized screening hall in front of him, he received nine days of use of the theater under the handover of the staff. The cost is not cheap, and the daily rental fee is as high as 2,000 US dollars. However, the location is good, just in the middle of the street.
After sending the staff away, he went in and watched it. He wanted to make sure that there would be no problems with the screening. There were fifty seats in the hall, and the curtain was not big. After watching the projector Luke, he also confirmed that there was no problem.
He took out the temporary poster, which was filled with a poor Naomi looked at the killer wearing a mask. There was only one sentence on the poster: How can he escape if his birthday changes to a festival?
The production was very simple, but he didn't take it too seriously. This poster mainly tells people what movies are being put here, and the buyers of film companies would never watch this thing.
After making a poster stand, the two of them returned to the hotel and waited quietly for the arrival of the film festival.
At nine o'clock in the morning, Wayne opened the door of the cinema on time, and Luke took the copy to prepare for the screening. Tourists came to the door one after another, looking at the poster and chatting with him for a few words. There were many people passing by, but few people were waiting to watch it.
Wayne was not waiting for them, Jimmy called him, and he would bring guests over before ten o'clock and ask him to prepare for the show and not make a mistake.
He ignored the tourists and looked at his watch anxiously until Jimmy showed up in front of Wayne with two people.
"Wayne, this is James of Touchstone Pictures and Albert of New Line Pictures. Are the film ready?"
Seeing that the two of them were quite cold, Wayne greeted them and hurried to help Luke show it. There is absolutely no mistake in this scene.
After James and Albert entered the cinema, they sat alone in the middle. He came to the front when he saw that there was no problem and told Jimmy that he could start at any time.
"Jimmy, are there only two companies? Are there any moviegoers from other companies?"
He hoped that there would be more chances of being taken seriously. Jimmy shook his head and said in a low voice:
"I only invited these two medium-sized companies with distribution capabilities. They came to watch it because of the relationship between Caa. There should be no more, tell Luke to start."
He nodded and signaled to Luke behind him to start the screening. He was not disappointed, and the movie would be screened for nine days, until the festival closed, there would always be a chance.
After the lights in the theater were slowly turned off, just before the movie began, Wayne noticed that two more people walked into the theater and sat in the back seat. He didn't care too much, thinking it was a tourist.
After more than ninety minutes of screening, James' attitude towards watching the movie gradually changed. He was originally going to leave after watching it for the sake of caa's face, but he didn't expect that it aroused his interest from the beginning.
From the first time the heroine of the movie was killed, James took out the record book and pencil, and recorded it while watching the movie. Wayne, who was standing in the back row, noticed him. Not only James, but one of the two people who came in, one of whom was reading and writing something while reading. Albert seemed completely impatient. Before the movie ended, he left the theater early.
Wayne's attention was not on the screen at all. He observed the people in the theater. Except for seven or eight tourists, the most eye-catching one was James.
As the movie ended, everyone applauded politely and then slowly retreated. James, led by Jimmy, came to him.
"Director Greenberg, your film was beyond my expectations. I will go back and report it to the company. If it is convenient for you, I will watch it again in the afternoon."
"Of course it's okay, welcome at any time."
When James saw him agreeing, he shook hands with him friendly and followed Jimmy out. When he walked out of the theater, Wayne found that there was still someone who had not left. He was a middle-aged white man in his thirties, who had just recorded it.
"Hello, Director Greenberg, can you talk a few times? I am a film viewer at Castle Stone Films. My name is Tom Seuss, you can call me Tom."
"Of course, let's go outside."
He didn't expect that there would be any unexpected surprises, so he took Tom out of the theater and came to the open-air cafe next to him.
"Director Greenberg, before I came, Mr. Jennings specially recommended your video to me and let me take a closer look."
As soon as he heard that, Wayne understood why he came here. It turned out to be recommended by Jennings.
"You can call me Wayne, I really want to thank Mr. Jennings when I go back. What do you think? Are Castle Rock Film interested in this film?"
Tom thought about it for a while, organized the language before speaking:
"The film's selling point is clear, and I personally am optimistic about it. Of course, I will report this film, and no one knows what will happen in the end."
He was not disappointed when he heard this. He chatted with Tom friendly for a while before saying goodbye to the cinema. In fact, they played one show all morning, and he understood the key and looked at it in the afternoon.
"Luke, don't be anxious, can you be quiet, sit down and eat something." Seeing the anxious Luke walking around, she was obviously in a bad mood.
"Wayne, what's going on? Do you think that James will buy our movie?"
Luke was by his side and looked at the people who came over from the street. From time to time, he could hear their discussions about the movie he had just watched, with most obviously negative comments.
"There is only so much we can do, don't worry, I believe someone will buy it."
He was not as anxious as Luke, and he still believed in the quality of the film. He just went to see several cinemas, and there was almost no small-cost movie that was being screened for him.
It's all shaking pictures, super long shots, and even the director wants to express everything, as if it's not artistic enough if he doesn't shoot like this.
This gave him great confidence, at least in these independent movies, his own movies can be watched.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, Wayne showed a professional smile and received four people led by James. After saying hello to each other, Luke started the film screening again.
This game was a little better than in the morning. At least a dozen viewers, his attention was always on James and the others. From time to time, they could still see them discussing something in a low voice. Until the movie was finished, James asked Wayne for his phone number, and then left with the company's people.
"Jimmy, do you think the touchstone people will be optimistic about this movie?"
After seeing off this wave of people, he chatted softly with Jimmy. Jimmy recalled the expressions of the people just now and said:
"Hope is very big. I think they will contact you. All you have to do now is to continue to show the films and wait for more people to come."
