#672 - Flying into the sky
Not long ago, Old Frank gave Little Frank his first personal checkbook, allowing Little Frank to enter the brand new world of bank credit.
Now, the hotel lobby manager has opened another door to a brand new world for Little Frank: payroll checks, guaranteed by the employing company.
Thus.
Little Frank set his sights on the payroll checks of the brand new identity of "Pilot Frank Taylor"; he needed to forge a payroll check based on his experience.
So, what should he do?
First, on a completely blank check, type out the basic information with a typewriter—
Because the upper limit for cashing a payroll check is three hundred dollars, this payroll check for Frank Taylor is for $299.12.
Second, soak a Pan American Airlines model airplane in the bathtub until the glue on the model's stickers loosens, then carefully use tweezers to remove the Pan American Airlines logo sticker from the tail and affix it to the upper left corner of the check.
Third, place the check inside a large book, flatten it, absorb the water, and let it dry.
Finally.
Put on the uniform, dress properly, go to the bank, find a window with a beautiful lady as the teller, hand her the payroll check, and when you notice her trying to carefully verify the authenticity of the check, smile, relax as much as possible, be as natural as possible, and look into her eyes with a clear gaze.
"I'm sorry, I believe you must hear this often, but you have the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen."
Sincere, straightforward.
And don't look away, keep making sure that the other person's cheeks are flushed under your gaze.
The lady lowered her eyes shyly, "Yes, I often hear that." Her smile bloomed completely, "What denomination of bills would you like to cash?"
Success.
Everything, just like that, like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
Thus.
The hotel bathtub was full of model airplanes, and Little Frank carefully placed the forged payroll checks on the floor of the room:
Neatly arranged, a dazzling array, covering the entire carpeted space of the room.
Things might occasionally encounter some minor setbacks.
For example, the bank needed to wait for the cash to be transported over; they could not start cashing checks until an hour after opening.
But it didn't matter; the bank manager pointed out a direction to Little Frank:
Go to the airport to cash the check.
Little Frank: ? ? ?
"The airport? Who would cash a check at the airport?"
Obviously, Little Frank had no concept.
The bank manager was slightly surprised, but he didn't suspect anything and continued to explain, "The airlines themselves, they always cash them for themselves."
This was another new piece of knowledge.
When Little Frank appeared at the airport, he didn't go directly to the Pan American Airlines counter, but to the Trans World Airlines counter, which had a sharing agreement with Pan American.
Before Little Frank had time to take out the payroll check, the counter airport staff smiled, "Are you one of my deadheads?"
Little Frank: … … "What?"
The smile froze on his lips.
Fortunately, the other party didn't suspect anything, just treated it as if Little Frank hadn't heard, and repeated it again, "Are you one of my deadheads going to Miami?"
Little Frank blinked his eyes, and in the midst of panic, he grasped reason, regained his composure, smiled, "Yes, yes. I am your deadhead."
The ground staff smiled, "You're a little late. But the jump seat in the cockpit is empty."
A deadhead can be understood as a crew member riding on an airplane, those crew members sitting in the cabin on a flight, who are not performing the flight's mission and cannot serve as backup crew for the flight; therefore, crew members of this flight who leave the cockpit to rest in the cabin during the flight cannot be called "deadheads."
The task of a "deadhead" is to fly to the destination as a passenger and then perform other flight missions. This is very common on everyday civilian flights, such as flying crew members back from different cities to help sick crew members; such as the opening of new routes, and so on.
Generally speaking, they can be treated as ordinary passengers, and the flight will leave empty seats for them.
However, if there are no seats available, then the jump seat can come in handy.
The jump seat is a foldable seat for crew members to use when there are no empty seats in the cabin; it is also called the crew seat.
However, in 1964, the jump seat specifically referred to an extra foldable seat in the cockpit, in addition to the seats for the captain and co-pilot.
The former, Little Frank vaguely figured out some clues and roughly understood its meaning; but the latter, Little Frank, who knew nothing about airplanes, was at a loss.
After successfully boarding the plane, under the guidance of a beautiful flight attendant, Little Frank entered the cockpit, but couldn't find the location of the jump seat.
Despite this, in the gaps of frantically searching for the jump seat, Little Frank skillfully dealt with the small talk with jargon in the cockpit.
The captain chatted, "What kind of plane do you fly, DC8?"
Little Frank, "707."
The captain immediately understood, "You just landed and are taking a red-eye flight back?"
It seemed that the flight that had just flown from Miami to New York was a 707.
Little Frank didn't panic, not only didn't panic, but also patted the captain on the shoulder, trying to get close while concealing his embarrassment of looking for the jump seat, "I'll be flying back and forth between continents for the next few months, earning some extra money by filling in for those who are sick and tired."
Obviously, Little Frank already understood the meaning of deadhead.
The captain, being an experienced person, chuckled, "There's no need to be embarrassed, we all came from this."
But where was the damn jump seat?
The beautiful flight attendant seemed to notice Little Frank's confusion, put her arm around Little Frank's waist from behind, pulled him slightly towards the door, opened a box from the lower part of the wall in the cockpit, and pulled out a folding chair from inside—
A simple stool.
This was the jump seat.
Little Frank had no time to be annoyed by this and immediately sat down.
The beauty flashed a smile, "What would you like to drink after takeoff?"
Little Frank was still in a state of shock, almost revealing his secret, "Cow… Milk." The words just blurted out.
Pfft.
A low laughter rang out in the screening room.
However, this was still not the end.
At the moment the plane took off, Little Frank, who was riding on an airplane for the first time in his life, couldn't help but grab the seat, trying his best to control his pounding heart, but still couldn't control himself, full of fear and surprise, watching the oncoming sunlight penetrate the window and fall on his face.
Like a sixteen-year-old boy.
