……

……

The next morning, Xiao Yao woke up very early.

He knew he had "woke up very early" without even looking at his phone, because the eternal fog outside the window was half-lit and half-dark, neither as bright as during the day nor as perpetually gray as at night.

Amidst the faint snoring, Xiao Yao tiptoed out of bed, picked up the trousers from the carpet, and put them on.

Xiao Yao turned back and his gaze fell on Shen Jie's figure.

She curled up gently, seemingly sinking into the softness of the bed. Her long black hair was spread out on the white pillow, and her delicate face revealed a sense of tranquility and peace. She hugged herself tightly, as if seeking warmth and comfort.

Xiao Yao suddenly realized that her sleeping posture was exactly the same as Shen Jie's, and the only way to tell them apart was by looking at their long hair.

In the dim morning light, the woman's cheeks appeared slightly flushed. Her sleeping posture resembled a shy flower, gentle and charming, her body light and graceful. In the tranquil morning, the shadows cast on her face concealed many of the marks of time, making her sleeping face look as beautiful and moving as a painting.

Xiao Yao couldn't help but smile slightly, a feeling of doting affection welling up in his heart. He gently squatted down, reached out to stroke Shen Jie's forehead, tucked the blanket around her, then rubbed his slightly sore back before quietly leaving the living room.

Seeing that Yu Luying had already sent a good morning text message, Xiao Yao bought a few more servings of pan-fried buns and delivered them to Yu and her daughter.

He bought four servings of pan-fried buns for Shen Tianyun, worried that it wouldn't be enough for him. He and Shen Jie each had two servings, which should be enough.

After returning to 2034, he was surprised to find that Shen Jie had already gotten up and was putting on makeup in front of a large dressing mirror.

"Good morning," Xiao Yao said, still a little embarrassed, but still greeted her in a natural and generous manner: "Meow Mommy."

As he spoke, he placed the six pan-fried buns in his hand onto the dining table.

"Don't come any closer!" Shen Jie shouted in a low voice, startling Xiao Yao.

"What's wrong?" Xiao Yao asked Shen Jie.

"I..." Shen Jie replied somewhat shyly, "I don't really want you to see me without makeup."

Xiao Yao thought to himself, "Haven't I already seen it?" But he didn't say it aloud.

"Why are you up so early too?" Xiao Yao asked Shen Jie.

“There’s a meeting scheduled at Qingniao that I can’t cancel at the last minute,” Shen Jie replied while applying powder to her face. “I was supposed to leave last night, but I dragged it out until this morning.”

"You're leaving already?" Xiao Yao asked Shen Jie. "Will you come back later?"

"Silly boy," Shen Jie replied with a smile, "with you here, what do you say?"

...Xiao Yao pondered for a moment: "I plan to go to your West Suburb Garden again today. I can't delay any longer." The boy said, "But Yu Lu—my classmate said that it's heavily guarded there. Not to mention your house, not even a fly can get into that community. Do you have any good ideas?"

"Shall I give you the access card for the side door?" Shen Jie suggested.

“It’s been thirty years, are you sure it still works?” Xiao Yao said.

"Probably not," Shen Jie thought for a moment and said, "I wonder if Lisa could help..."

"Who is Lisa? Even if she can help, it's never a bad thing to ask."

“Lisa was my personal maid back then. She’s Filipino and we’ve always been very close. Now she’s the head housekeeper in our household.”

"Just like Johns?" Xiao Yao suddenly felt uneasy.

“No, she’s just a housekeeper,” Shen Jie emphasized meaningfully, “but she should be trustworthy.”

"How can I contact her? Do you have her phone number or something?" Xiao Yao asked, as if he had grasped at a straw.

“How could I remember?” Shen Jie shook her head and said, “In 2004, she probably couldn’t afford a cell phone.”

Shen Jie seemed to suddenly remember something: "Actually, you know what? I just remembered."

"What are you remembering?"

“You must have walked through the mirror in my room to help me get out,” Shen Jie said. “Or, we ended up meeting in the mirror… I don’t know what that means, but that’s the impression I have.”

"Could you recall it in even more detail and clarity?" Xiao Yao asked eagerly.

Sick note

2023-06-23

I tested positive for COVID-19 twice. I had a high fever all night and didn't sleep a wink. I went to the emergency room this morning for an IV drip and physical cooling. I just woke up around this time after coming back.

Will update again tomorrow

2023-06-24

Basically, for the first time in two days, the temperature has dropped below 38°C. I'm already writing, but it's very slow. I'm not in a good state. Sitting in front of the computer, I feel completely exhausted. I'm not confident that I can finish writing before midnight.

I will definitely resume updating starting tomorrow, starting with 4-5 days a week. Once I've fully recovered, I'll resume my regular high-volume updates.

Thank you, and I'm sorry.

Chapter 246 You Chapter 245 Saving Your Lover and Comrade

*This chapter is also known as "A Decisive Decision".

"Could you recall it in even more detail and clarity?" Xiao Yao asked eagerly.

Shen Jie clutched her head, frowning and struggling for a long time, but she couldn't take another step forward to recall any more details.

"It's alright," Xiao Yao comforted her. "After all, 30 years have passed. It's normal to not remember or not recall clearly."

"You're so considerate." Shen Jie breathed a sigh of relief.

"Am I going to be a tyrant in the future?" Xiao Yao joked.

“The you I know is more decisive,” Shen Jie smiled, then continued:

"However, is it possible, I mean possible, that my 'regression' of 'new memories' can only extend up to 'your' point in time... things before that?"

This sentence was a bit convoluted and somewhat grammatically incorrect, but Xiao Yao immediately understood what she meant: "You mean, you can't recall anything that 'hasn't' happened to me yet."

“BINGO,” Shen Jie said.

“That’s not right either,” Xiao Yao pointed out astutely. “Didn’t you see that I used the mirror to save you? That’s something that hasn’t happened yet.”

“That’s right,” Shen Jie said. “So that means we can push things forward a little bit, but not too much, and we can’t see the specific details clearly, because it’s just one ‘possibility’ in the long river of time?”

“Limited foresight…” Xiao Yao stroked his chin. “That makes sense, but so far it’s just a hypothesis with insufficient evidence.”

"Hmm... I also have this vague memory that 'Dad was the one who ultimately gave in on this matter,' which, logically speaking, is something that hasn't happened to you yet, right?"

“…I don’t understand,” Xiao Yao muttered.

“Because in my original timeline, the ‘forced marriage’ incident never happened,” Shen Jie said. “Do you understand?”

"Ah."

As Shen Jie began to gather her long hair, she gently glided through each strand. She lightly combed through her hair with her fingertips, her fingers nimbly weaving it into an exquisite bun.

The woman slowly coiled her long hair behind her head, carefully adjusting the position of each strand to ensure the entire bun looked both natural and orderly.

She used a hairpin to secure the shape of her hair bun, making it firm and stable.

Suddenly, Xiao Yao had a flash of inspiration. On a whim, he told Shen Jie that he had gone to 04 and brought back that XXII-shaped platinum hair clip, which he clumsily put on the woman's sideburn.

"No, what are you doing?" Shen Jie said with a smile, tilting her head to try and avoid it: "Don't be silly, it doesn't match."

"I just want to see what it looks like."

"There's really nothing I can do about you."

"Can't you remember?" Xiao Yao opened his palm and showed Shen Jie the hair clip in his hand: "This was your favorite in high school. You gave it to me as a keepsake before you went home. I wanted to see what you would look like wearing it now."

"Okay." Shen Jie smiled and reached out to take the hair clip. She turned her face to the side in front of the mirror and carefully pinned the hair clip to her temple.

"Is it pretty?" Shen Jie asked him.

“Hmm,” Xiao Yao admitted, “it does seem a bit mismatched.”

After all, she had now changed into a high-end business suit—a tailored blazer in classic dark black that complemented her fair skin, paired with a fitted pencil skirt that accentuated her long, alluring legs.

Shen Jie's updo and stylish business suit highlight her sophistication and temperament. This outfit undoubtedly makes her stand out even more, while also making the girlish decorations seem out of place on her.

Xiao Yao thought with a touch of melancholy, "One day, youth will fade away, and 'she' will inevitably become 'she.' This is the law of nature, and there's no way to avoid it."

If only one could remain a boy or a girl forever...

"Then your life will end at 18. You won't object, will you?" The little man in red jumped onto Xiao Yao's palm and severed his lifeline with a fork.

"Or perhaps we could change the definition of 'boy' and 'girl' to '80 years old'?" The little man in white opened a notebook and made some notes.

"It's okay," Shen Jie said with a relaxed smile, "I'll secretly take it off before meeting the client."

“Okay~” Xiao Yao blurted out, “No, I didn’t say I would give it to you.”

"Huh?" Shen Jie was taken aback and said.
