Chapter 1 First Arrival

Silicon Valley, USA.

As dawn broke, a ray of sunlight pierced through the thin mist, illuminating the city and bathing everything in a soft morning light.

The early morning is tranquil and serene, like a traditional Chinese ink painting, without the slightest hint of noise.

Li Mu groggily opened his eyes, still feeling sleepy. Looking at the unfamiliar surroundings... had he really stumbled into a TV drama?

However, the body is still one's own; it's just that one doesn't know what role one will play in this situation.

Then a flood of memories came over me, and it took me a long time to sort them out.

He is now Su Mingzhe, the eldest son of the Su family. After graduating from Tsinghua University, he went to the United States to study and met Wu Fei, a beautiful and intelligent student who was also studying abroad.

Buying a house, getting married, having children... and now it's been a full ten years since I went abroad.

Thinking of Wu Fei, a beautiful and tall figure immediately comes to mind. I glanced at her and saw that she had already gotten up and was preparing breakfast.

……

After lying quietly for a while, I carefully sorted out the current situation. September 2017 was similar to, yet different from, the real world.

The similarities lie in the overall framework and direction of development of the world; the differences lie in many details.

It's like a parallel world that's neither here nor there.

……

Having thoroughly familiarized himself with the situation, Li Mu took a deep breath and, following his usual routine, got dressed, got up, and washed up.

I went to the bathroom mirror again and carefully looked at my face, which was both familiar and unfamiliar.

With a sigh, I thought, "Since I'm here, I might as well make the best of it!"

This was also the first time he had experienced something so amazing.

Just then, a soft yet magnetic voice rang in my ears: "Mingzhe, breakfast is ready."

Li Mu felt a little flustered, so he took a deep breath to calm his tense mood.

"Okay, I'll be right there."

He stood there for a while, taking deep breaths to calm himself down. His face regained its composure before he nervously walked towards the restaurant.

When Wu Fei saw him come out, a faint smile appeared on her face.

“I told you not to work so late yesterday, but you didn’t listen. Now you’re sleeping in. It’s the same at your company. What kind of work can’t be done at the office and has to be taken home?”

"Yes, Feifei, you're right. I'll be more careful in the future," Li Mu said, but his eyes were a little unfocused.

Before him stood an elegant woman, dressed in simple yet refined attire, wearing soft flat shoes, with a fresh, unadorned face free of makeup.

As she spoke, she walked to the dining table, gently brushing her hair behind her ear. In the morning light, her jade-like cheeks were tinged with a faint glow, and her delicate features exuded a dignified elegance.

"This is my wife." When Li Mu realized this, he was somewhat stunned. In reality, he was a young man who had graduated less than a year ago and was already being brutally beaten down by society; he had never experienced anything like this before.

Although she tried her best to keep her face calm, her heart was in turmoil.

Perhaps because they were an old married couple, Wu Fei didn't pay any attention to his changing expression and continued to set out breakfast.

Li Mu gradually calmed down, and when he saw the sumptuous breakfast on the table, he was once again in a daze.

There was milk, a beautiful fruit platter, and perfectly toasted bread with cheese and fried eggs.

Li Mu took a deep breath, and as usual, sat down quietly to eat breakfast, trying to speak as little as possible. When he needed to speak, he would simply recite a few lines from a topic he had discussed countless times before.

Everything was peaceful, and Wu Fei's attention was mostly on her daughter, which relieved him.

As they interacted, more fragments of memories flashed through his mind, gradually immersing Li Mu in his current identity. He became increasingly familiar with this home and the woman before him, and his heart gradually calmed down.

……

After breakfast, before leaving for work, Li Mu, as usual, gently hugged Wu Fei and kissed her on her snow-white forehead.

Looking at the intelligent and beautiful woman in front of him, he couldn't help but feel a little nervous, his mind went blank, and he hugged her a little too tightly and kissed her a little too long.

Then she received a big eye roll. After they separated, Wu Fei's spirits were noticeably higher, and her expression was even brighter.

After saying goodbye to Wu Fei, Li Mu drove to the company; Wu Fei also started her car and took her daughter to daycare.

When I arrived at the company, I greeted my colleagues as usual.

As soon as I arrived at my workstation, Liu Feng, a Chinese colleague with whom I had a close relationship and who was well-informed, came over with a mysterious look on his face.

"Brother Su, have you heard? The company's financing round failed again!"

Li Mu was stunned for a moment, then instantly recalled the company's financing.

"Haven't they been talking for over three months already, and supposedly there's a high chance of success?"

Liu Feng shrugged: "Those are all messages released by the company to reassure investors and our employees."

"The VR market has been too sluggish this year, and it is not favored by capital at all. This is the second time this year that the company has launched a financing round, and the valuation has been lower each time, but it still has not been successful."

He leaned closer and said mysteriously, "I heard from Xiao Zhao in the HR department that the company is prepared for a future cash shortage and a protracted battle. In order to increase revenue and reduce expenditure and maintain operations, they have quietly started a layoff plan."

"The layoff list will be finalized in the next month or two. It's said that the authority to lay off employees will be delegated to the supervisors, and each department will have a few openings. Many people have already started to work hard, so you should prepare early and get in touch with David to avoid ending up on the layoff list."

Li Mu let out a timely "Ah!" and a look of surprise appeared on his face.

"Has it reached the point where layoffs are necessary?"

Liu Feng smiled wryly and said, "Of course! But with your skills, the chances of you being laid off are slim, so there's no need to worry too much."

The two chatted for a few more minutes before their department head, David, arrived. Liu Feng and Li Mu exchanged a glance before leaving as if nothing had happened.

Looking at David, Li Mu had mixed feelings. According to his memory, the two had a good relationship. Su Mingzhe was a key technical member of the company, and his technical skills were among the best in the entire department.

Moreover, he is hardworking, harmless, and doesn't cause much trouble.

From all perspectives, unless the company goes bankrupt, he shouldn't be among those laid off. If a key technical employee like him is to be laid off, the company's technological influence in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley will be further diminished, making it even harder to secure funding.

However, in the future, David, his boss with whom he had a good relationship, suddenly changed his attitude and personally put him on the layoff list.

Is it really because he returned to China for a few days during a critical period, or is there another reason?

For example, Su Mingzhe, a Stanford graduate student with exceptional technical skills, may pose a threat to certain individuals in the future, given the company's downsizing efforts.

Workplace politics is prevalent in every country, including China, and the United States is no exception.

I just hope the outcome won't be so realistic and stark.

……

After casually greeting David, Li Mu refocused his thoughts.

The news of layoffs brought by Liu Feng not only aroused some of his speculations, but also stirred up another set of thoughts in him.

The plot begins when Su Mingzhe returns to China to handle his mother's funeral amidst company layoffs.

With the departure of the domineering Su's mother, the selfish and indecisive Su Daqiang, like a child, completely let loose and started causing all sorts of trouble.

Others are a burden to their fathers, he's a burden to his children.

Su Mingzhe, who has been abroad for 10 years and feels guilty, begins to blindly follow his parents' wishes; Su Mingcheng, who has been living off his parents for years and is used to it; and Su Mingyu, who is least favored by her parents and cuts off all financial ties with her family at the age of eighteen.

Under the unbridled behavior of Su Daqiang, the family of several people not only caused all sorts of trouble, but also exposed the problems that had accumulated in the family in the past.

This makes the already complicated family relationships even more conflicted.

It seems there's a mission involved in this journey.

Task 1: Get to the root of the problem and eliminate the destabilizing factors within the Su family.

Li Mu was speechless. You might as well just show Su Daqiang and Su Mingcheng their ID cards.

Task Two: Responsibility.

To make up for the family deficiencies of the past, and to be a good husband, a good father, and a good brother.

Task Three: After so many years abroad, he's still just getting by. Fulfill Su Mingzhe's wish to achieve great success and return home in glory.

……

These tasks are all quite challenging, and each one is particularly difficult for Li Mu, a young man who has just graduated.

We can only take one step at a time.

Work hard, young man!
