The Gods' Fool - The Last Knight: Chapter Four, The Meeting in the Plaza

October 1st, sunny.

Today's clear sky was a rare stroke of luck for Morgan, so as agreed, Irene and Olivia went out together, and at Irene's insistence, they brought two umbrellas.

Olivia was holding two guns by herself.

Since arriving in this city, Igoris has hardly explored it properly, spending her days sitting in her own office, waiting for the next client to come and have some meaningless conversations with her.

However, her quality of life has indeed improved a lot, after all, Olivia has always been very patient with her and even taught her how to tie her hair.

According to the plan, today was the day Iglesias and Olivia were to meet Ling together.

She hadn't seen this operator for a while, so she did miss him a bit. Of course, nostalgia couldn't lessen Igries's resentment; she would never agree to put her boss in danger under any circumstances.

However, it seems that today is not a workday, so Olivia did not take Igris directly to the police station, but instead went to the central square.

The square here is similar to the abandoned square in Maulkensson, the only difference being that the square here is still maintained by the city hall.

The fountain still has water, and although it has some cracks, it is still working. The flower bed is not just full of withered grass. Igris could barely see a few withered green plants, which were planted there by someone, rather than growing on their own.

Although it is still dilapidated, it is at least not in such a terrible state that it is not worth asking for too much. How many people who come here care about the so-called scenery?

At least Igris didn't care; she just sat on the bench, lost in thought.

Because Olivia said they had arranged to meet here.

"She stood you up?"

After waiting for a long time without seeing anyone, Igris finally looked at Olivia, who was sitting next to her, with some impatience.

Wealthy people are probably more patient; at least, Iglesias felt that Olivia didn't seem to be in a hurry at all.

"Maybe I arrived a little early? Don't worry about it too much, or are you getting a little impatient?"

"Indeed, I'm getting impatient. After all, sitting here won't bring me any benefits; it will only waste my limited vacation time."

Igris sounded resentful, which was largely due to her job; after all, she never wanted to listen to idle people spouting what they thought were humorous remarks in front of her.

This is a detective agency, not a marriage agency. She doesn't care about anyone's relationship status, no matter how rich they are.

"...You seem very unhappy with your current job?"

Olivia hadn't expected that such a short working period would cause Igries so much resentment. The reason she couldn't figure it out was simply because she hardly ever stayed in the office and naturally didn't hear those conversations that Igries practically wanted to plug her ears with.

"Yes, I'm not satisfied... because I have to constantly restrain myself from shoving the gun barrel into everyone's mouth, which is really hard."

"Sorry, I haven't thought about that."

Olivia seemed to take it seriously. Of course, Iglesias didn't have the strange habit of shoving gun barrels into other people's mouths; she just couldn't stand a lot of pointless conversation.

She wasn't a very sociable person to begin with, so this kind of work really wasn't suitable for her.

"After this period of time, I shouldn't have anything else to do... Maybe I can help you share some of the burden."

"You're so thoughtful... I hope we won't have any more of those guys with brains like they've been spitting out Deep Ones coming to our door in the future."

Ivy Grace's complaints didn't last long, not because she gave up complaining about the job, but because she noticed a familiar figure approaching.

Of course, it wasn't Ling; she probably really stood Olivia up and didn't come.

May I sit here?

The gray-haired girl waved gently at Igris, and under the joint gaze of Igris and Olivia, she sat down quietly beside Igris, taking off her hat and placing it on her lap.

I didn't expect to see you here.

Igor Qunlis adjusted her posture slightly, not wanting to accidentally disturb the other person, and at the same time looked at the thing in her hand with some curiosity.

It's a newspaper, probably recently purchased.

"Indeed, I didn't expect that I might have disturbed your date."

Momokawa spread out the newspaper in his hand, smiled gently at Igris, and then turned to look at the curious Olivia.

"My name is Momokawa. I don't know if Igris has introduced me to you before."

"You are... the friend she mentioned who sought shelter from the rain?"

Momokawa nodded slightly.

"Indeed, so you're her boss, right?"

"Olivia, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Olivia extended her hand directly to Momokawa, who blinked, then folded the newspaper back up with a hint of helplessness and took her hand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too. It was a pity you weren't in the store when I visited last time."

"So, is there something you'd like to commission?"

Momokawa hesitated for a moment, glanced at the quiet Igris, and finally shook his head.

"I'm just curious what kind of boss can find such an excellent assistant."

"…Thanks?"

Olivia sensed something was off, but she was too embarrassed to say anything, after all, the other person was Igris's friend.

"So you did discover something?"

Igris pointed to the newspaper in her hand, equally curious.

"Ah...it's just a regular newspaper, do you want to read it?"

She unfolded the newspaper again and spread it out in front of her.

“I originally planned to poke two holes in it so that I could pretend to be reading the newspaper and secretly observe others without being discovered, but it seems that no one would stick the newspaper to their face to read it, so I gave up.”

She gestured with her finger on the newspaper, then compared it to her face, completely ignoring the contents. It looked somewhat comical, yet also a little cute.

"You could try wearing sunglasses so that people can't tell if you're reading the newspaper or looking at him."

Igris has experience in this area, so she wouldn't mind giving her a few good ideas.

"Oh my god... I hadn't thought of that. Thank you for reminding me."

"It was just a small favor."

Watching the two engaging in this strange exchange, Olivia suddenly felt that she might be getting in the way.

After all, she couldn't find any way to interject, and could only watch the two of them chat idly, feeling completely ignored.

Fortunately, someone eventually came to her rescue.

"Sorry I'm a little late! Something came up over there, so I had to take care of it first."

Ling's voice carried from afar, immediately attracting the attention of the three people.

Ling was wearing casual clothes, not a uniform, but her waving gesture from afar was still quite obvious.

"I thought you weren't coming."

"Ha ha…"

Just as Olivia was about to say something more, Igris suddenly stood up, put her hands on her hips, and looked at Ling.

"I also thought you weren't coming."

"Igris...? What brings you here?"

Ling paused for a moment, then realized what was going on. She looked at Olivia, who was pretending not to know anything, and finally sighed helplessly.

"So, you knew everything?"

"I know nothing. All I know is that you seem to be planning to take my family's detective on some dangerous mission."

Iglesias made it very clear, and her attitude was also very clear: as long as Olivia didn't get involved in this matter, she wouldn't ask any more questions, but if that wasn't the case, then she would need to have a proper talk with them.

"How about I tell you slowly...?"

"Of course, I have plenty of time."

The Gods' Fool - The Last Knight: Chapter Five, The Current Situation

"Morkens' mayor was ousted for corruption and bribery, so the new mayor began a crackdown on potential threats and organized crime. Our Special Investigations Unit was specifically assigned to assist in the investigation. It was during this process that we discovered a large number of illegal activities in Morkens... including drug trafficking, human trafficking, unlicensed factories, and unsafe coal mines, among other shady operations. This has a very serious impact on the entire city. Even more serious is that a large number of homeless and unemployed people are disappearing every day, and the number is constantly rising, with absolutely no clues as to where they have gone."

"What does this have to do with Olivia?"

Igris wasn't curious about those shady deals or the so-called disappearances; she only knew that these things shouldn't have anything to do with Olivia.

“Olivia has lived here for a long time and holds a high position. Her stance can be considered absolutely neutral. Her opinions and information are of great help to us. We also need her to assist us in investigating certain special locations, such as underground casinos.”

Iglesias turned to look at Olivia, but Olivia pretended not to see her and looked away.

"I thought it was just because their family was rich."

It seems that Igris doesn't know her boss very well.

"Actually, there's nothing wrong with how you see it."

Olivia gave Ling a somewhat awkward wink, and Ling had no choice but to continue.

"So we do need her help, but don't worry, it's just some informational help. We will not actively pull her into danger, I can assure you of that. Olivia is also my friend, and I don't want her to get hurt either."

"Since you've put it that way..."

Igris sighed helplessly.

"Then, is there anything I can help you with?"

"It's nothing, we can handle it. Besides, I didn't come alone this time. Other operators are investigating with me. If we find any major problems, they will probably send reinforcements. The higher-ups are taking this mission very seriously and don't want anything to go wrong with us."

Unlike the last time in Maulkens, this time the Special Investigations Department specifically dispatched two operators to conduct the investigation, rather than assisting local operators. This shows that they really value this matter and want to avoid being affected by other factors. They even specially invited operators from other places, and it is very likely that they are not the first batch.

However, such a large-scale operation, if it were just a simple missing persons case and a crackdown on organized crime, would be a bit too much of a fuss.

So it's clear they've found some clues, but they can't reveal too much yet.

Even during the last two-month period, the Special Investigations Department only sent two agents to investigate, so this matter is likely to be even more serious than that.

But since the Special Investigations Department has already noticed, there's a high chance that nothing else will happen, so there's no need to worry too much.

"Speaking of which, what exactly is it that has kept you occupied for so long?"

Seeing that Igris's questioning was almost over, Olivia quickly took over the conversation and pulled Ling to sit down.

"Well... as I just mentioned, because of the crackdown on the gray industry, many illegally operating factories have been shut down. But this has had a significant impact. For example, a large number of workers will lose their jobs, and in the short term, the municipal government has no way to help them get back to work. So everyone is very tense during this period, and things could easily escalate."
