"The Flower and Leaf Festival was originally scheduled to end at 5 p.m., but due to some unforeseen circumstances, the event was ended early."
"What accident?"
"Someone took something they shouldn't have."
Igriston paused for a moment, looked at Pasa's expression, and asked tentatively.
"for example?"
"You shouldn't have asked."
"This is of great help to the case."
Pasa hesitated for a moment, then turned around and tossed a sealed bag to Igris from the evidence storage cabinet.
"This is... a sunflower?"
"This is called a sunset sunflower. It's an unusual plant that disguises itself as a sunflower. It will actively spray spores at people who get close, confusing their sense of time. It's not a particularly dangerous plant, but the nights here are not safe."
After saying that, he sat down opposite Igris.
"Do you think this kind of thing would be helpful to the case?"
"Where did this come from?"
Igris didn't answer Pasa's question, but instead looked at Ling beside her.
“Ling doesn’t know about this. She was just transferred here. This area has always been my responsibility.”
Passa tapped the table to draw Igris's attention back, and continued speaking.
"This matter has been resolved. The origin of the sunset sunflower is still unclear, but it often appears in sunflower fields or disguises itself as sunflower seeds. Before it matures, it is no different from a sunflower and there is no situation where it can be easily distinguished. Only after it matures does the sunset sunflower produce spores instead of seeds. That is the difference between them."
Igris tapped the table, mimicking Pasa's gesture, and asked in return.
"Krisuna owns a flower shop, how can you be sure that there aren't sunset sunflowers in the flower shop?"
"Are you out of your mind? I told you, this thing only makes people lose their sense of time. Even if she was really affected, wouldn't we see her wandering around the street?"
“Watch your wording, Officer Passa. I’m just offering any suggestions that might be helpful to the case.”
"Then you'd better offer some meaningful suggestions."
Igris pursed her lips, too lazy to say anything more to him, and continued to ask.
"As for churches, how many churches are there in this city?"
"There is only one, and they believe in God, which has nothing to do with Krisuna's beliefs."
However, Ling raised a different opinion at this point.
"However, according to my investigation, there was a church here before that. The specific name is no longer recorded, but it is indeed the oldest historical belief here. The existence of that church was not for worshipping gods. Its existence represents a symbol, worshipping the moon, or rather, the night."
"Cult".
Igris decisively interrupted Ling's desire to continue recounting history.
"...Indeed, it was a cult, so it was quickly eradicated and dismantled, but that was almost a hundred years ago."
"Haven't you been to the ruins?"
Ling shook her head and said with a strange expression.
"Actually... the ruins are Krisuna's flower shop, which has been demolished and renovated for a long time."
"..."
Igris slowly stood up and sighed softly under the simultaneous gazes of Ling and Passa.
"Now, let me help you sort this out. First, all sorts of strange things happen at night in this city. During the Flower and Leaf Festival, flowers appear that make people lose their sense of time. And the predecessor of Krisuna's flower shop was a so-called cult church that believed in the night. Before that, there was even an old man with dementia who would come here to wander around looking for his son. Do you really think this is normal?"
Hearing this, Ling realized what was happening and frowned as she spoke.
"You mean, this case isn't just about Krisuna alone. The reality is that the cult was trying to use this method to make people lose their sense of time and take advantage of the increasingly dangerous nights to achieve some kind of goal?"
"At least you're willing to use your brain... So didn't you ever think about why only this city would be so dangerous at night?"
"This is just one example of the similarities between the three cities. Other cities are not safe either; it's just that this place is relatively more dangerous."
Pasa was still being stubborn, but Igris had already given up on him.
"So have you checked if there are any other sunflowers in Krisuna's flower shop? It's the only flower shop in the city, and it's also the most likely route of transmission for them."
“We will check, it will take some time, and we would be better off doing it during the day.”
Distinguishing between sunflowers and evening primroses is extremely difficult, so even with a dedicated investigation, it may not be possible to obtain a result in a short time, and going out at night is extremely dangerous.
"But... even if we know who did it, we don't have any clues to pinpoint their exact location."
“Krisuna will not disappear into thin air.”
Igristo stroked her chin and spoke slowly.
“Even if there were few people in the square, she would be noticed if she appeared on the street. No one would fail to notice such a beautiful lady, but obviously, no one did.”
"So either she didn't go out onto the street, or she never left at all."
Hearing Igris's conjecture, Derain couldn't help but laugh and clapped along in perfect unison.
"As expected of my assistant, your perspective is so insightful... Would you like to see the clues I found?"
"of course."
Igris spent a long time reasoning there, almost forgetting that she was just an assistant and the real detective was watching her performance the whole time.
“Krisuna once complained to me that there were rats in her flower shop that would always sneak out in the middle of the night to steal her flowers and make a mess of petals. Even rat poison didn’t work. This made her even think about getting a cat specifically to catch the rats.”
As he spoke, he put the pipe in his mouth, chuckled, and continued.
"However, some rats are not so easy to catch."
"sewer?"
Their conversation was like a riddle, and Delien's smile made Igris understand a lot.
For example, he knows everything, but he refuses to say anything.
"This money is really hard-earned."
She turned to look at Pasa.
"Have your people check it thoroughly, make sure the sewers aren't leaking, and watch out for rats inside."
Pasa gave the two people in front of him a meaningful look, then stood up from his chair.
"That concludes today's investigation. We will commence operations tomorrow. You two can also get some rest. I do not recommend that you leave now, so you can stay at the station and wait until dawn to leave."
Igris didn't really care about that. After all, it didn't matter where she slept. If she went home to sleep, she might have to smell that disgusting vampire smell, which she didn't want.
"Officer Passa, just a friendly reminder."
Derain stood up, and as Passa turned around, he took his pipe out of his mouth and spoke slowly.
"Being too attached to the past will not end well."
"I don't need you to remind me."
Outside of work, Passa always speaks in such an annoying way.
"Fine, you can keep arguing here, but I need to rest. Can I have a quiet place?"
Igris stretched; she was indeed tired. Whether it was running those few steps or fighting with the charcoal, she felt somewhat exhausted.
"You can sleep in the morgue; it's quiet there."
It sounds terrifying, but police morgues don't usually keep bodies for long and are mostly empty when there are no cases.
"You can sleep with me too."
Ling winked at Igris, but Igris rolled her eyes in response.
"Officer, do you really think you're cute?"
Although Igris's words were somewhat hurtful, Ling did indeed look quite pretty. Although she was hardly the type to be cute due to her age and personality, this police officer seemed to particularly enjoy pretending to be cute.
"I don't know, but I think you probably can't beat me."
"What's wrong with you cops?!"
The Gods' Fool's Play - The Worship of Eternal Night: Chapter Eleven, Unexpected Event
Early morning sunlight streamed into the police station office, waking Igris from her nap on the desk.
She always manages to regain her senses at the fastest speed, except when she's been drinking, since she's never been drunk in her past life.
The police station was eerily quiet at that moment. The whereabouts of Derek and Pasa were unknown, but Ling was organizing documents on the side, occasionally making the sound of turning pages.
After noticing that Igris had raised her head, she put down her work and came to Igris' side.
"you're awake."
Where are they?
Ling shrugged and placed a document in front of Igris.
"Derien has gone back. Passa took our men to search the sewers. You guessed right, something suspicious was found in the flower shop, and we've found some clues. We'll have results soon."
"That guy did all this while I was sleeping?"
Igris looked up at the window again. The sun had just risen, so it was impossible that she had slept for a long time.
"He's always like this, he's always holding his breath and won't let go until he finishes what he's doing. He'll suffocate himself sooner or later."
Ling smiled and sat down next to Igris.
"Hey, you're Derian's assistant, right?"
"I just joined two days ago. If you want to ask me if I have anything to say about him, I don't know."
Igris shifted to the side, trying to avoid Ling who rushed over to get closer, but Ling grabbed her chair instead and pulled Igris over.
"Why are you so hostile towards me? I know you and Pasa don't get along, but I didn't do anything to you."
"I hate cops."
"Did you break the law?"
Igris shook her head, and Ling, somewhat puzzled, continued to ask.
