In the game, the price for learning a basic spell is normally between one thousand and three thousand runes.
Morion wasn't sure if the exchange rates in reality and the game were the same, but at least the "cheapest" monster he killed was worth at least two hundred runes.
Moraine smiled, and golden light gathered in his palm, forming a golden, coin-like object.
“Mr. Tops, I want to learn magic from you.” He handed the rune to the man in front of him.
"Oh, thank you, thank you so much."
"You are such a good person."
It's so sad to get friend-zoned by an older man.
Tops gratefully accepted the rune, then suddenly froze.
People living in border areas naturally feel the "weight" of runes.
When the coin formed from the rune came into his hand, he immediately determined its value.
Tops immediately ran into a problem.
"One thousand runes... I'm sorry, I don't have change."
As he spoke, he tried to return the rune to Morion.
But Morion raised a hand and waved it.
“Wait a minute,” Morion said. “Besides magic, I also want to buy a staff.”
"Moreover, as you can see, I am an outsider who has neither lodging nor food in the border region, and I may have to stay with you for a few days."
Moraine has activated the Lone Wolf's abilities.
In Tops' eyes, Moraine's friendliness was almost tangible, emanating from him.
This third-rate mage couldn't resist for even a second.
His gaze softened immediately, and after hesitating for a few seconds, he accepted the entire thousand runes.
“Yes, you can’t use magic without a staff in the borderlands.” He nodded. “I have a few spare academy radiance staffs, but they’re all apprentice-style. I hope you won’t mind.”
Moraine waved her hand dismissively.
"So what? How can a student use something better than a teacher?"
This made Tops smile.
Then, he began to introduce himself.
“My name is Tops, and I used to be a student of the ‘Origin School’ at the Academy of Realucalia.”
As he spoke, he took out three books from under his wizard's robes and handed them to Morion with a slightly apologetic expression.
"These are the only three spells I can use: Shining Stone Magic Pebble, Shining Stone Curve, and Starlight."
"Radiant Stone Magic Particles can release magical stones forward, flying towards the enemy like throwing sharp pebbles."
"The Radiant Stone Curve can release a magical arc that spreads horizontally, similar to a warrior's sword aura."
"Finally, there's starlight, which can release small, floating starlight to illuminate the surroundings. It's... a pretty good lighting magic."
"I'm very sorry, you kindly gave me runes, but all I can teach you are these low-level spells..."
Chapter 50: How to get the Brilliant Stone?
“No, you don’t have to say that.” Morion reached out and took the three books that didn’t look very thick. He flipped through them and found that he couldn’t understand them at all. “It’s already quite good that we can learn magic itself.”
“My name is Morion. I hope you will be kind enough to guide me in the coming days, Mr. Tops,” he said with a smile, his voice appearing directly in Tops’ mind.
“Yes, I will.” Tops nodded earnestly. “Please take good care of me, Morion.”
As a "waste stone," this was his first time teaching someone, so he was inevitably a little nervous.
The conversation between the two paused for a moment, giving Tops a chance to pay attention to Morion's manner of speaking.
However, he only felt a slight envy and didn't think much of it.
After all, while the ability to make sounds appear directly in one's mind is rare, it does exist.
This only proves that Moraine's magical talent might really be exceptional.
"By the way, Professor Tops, do you usually live in the church?" Morion asked.
“No,” Tops shook his head and pointed in a direction, “there’s a village over there, I live there.”
A village?
Moraine recalled for a moment.
He didn't remember there being any villages nearby.
That makes sense, though, since it's impossible to create the entire border region in the game.
It seems the game developer has hidden all the player-friendly areas in the game.
It truly lives up to its name as "the blade of the cursed frog".
"So, teacher, you want 10 runes to spend in the village?" Morion asked curiously.
“Yes,” Tops nodded, “Ten runes should keep me comfortable for half a month.”
“Is that so?” Morion nodded.
So that's what prices are like here.
Looking at Morion, Tops asked with concern:
"Morrain, where is your finger witch?"
At the Borderlands, every Faded One possesses a Finger Witch who can help them convert runes into power.
“I probably don’t have a witch,” Morion shook his head.
He had been here for several days and had never seen his witch.
They're either dead, or they never existed in the first place.
Moraine personally prefers the latter.
"I see," Tops said regretfully. "Please accept my condolences."
He misunderstood.
In the eyes of many, the Faded Ones and the Finger Witches are considered ominous.
As a result, a large-scale witch hunt once broke out in the border area.
Tops believes that Moraine's witch was hunted down by someone who hates the Faded Ones and the Finger Witches.
Moraine shrugged, spread her hands, and offered no explanation, feeling that this was fine as it was.
It's simply a matter of using energy.
He's a spiest person; at worst, he can figure out how to convert runes into power himself after he becomes a wizard.
“Oh, right, teacher,” Morion gave a very innocent smile, “you may have to teach some things from scratch.”
"You'd better stay healthy before that happens. If you collapse before me, I'll have to take care of you, and all my tuition fees will have been for nothing."
As he spoke, Moraine casually put her hand on Tops' shoulder.
White magical power ignited, generating positive energy from the reversed spell.
"Hmm?" Tops looked puzzled.
Moraine held the book in one arm and said with a smile.
"I can't read."
As soon as he finished speaking, Tops suddenly felt that his long-term fatigue and hidden injuries in his body were gradually recovering, and his organs, which had been weakened by long-term malnutrition, were slowly returning to normal.
Apart from a small amount of crystallization resulting from his research into pyroxene magic, most of his bodily functions are recovering.
"What is this?" Tops opened his eyes wide in surprise.
…………
A month later.
Ripples spread through the synchronized space, and Morion, dressed in a black mage's robe, emerged from it.
"Yo, you're here?" Bengti Morion greeted him.
"Where are the others?" Morion looked around.
Beng Tie Morion shrugged and didn't answer.
The two high-fived, simultaneously memorizing the information.
Morion's experiences over the past month flashed through Morion's mind.
A month has passed since the start of the French World Tour.
In just the first half month, Morion, as a Seeker of Secrets, had already successfully learned all of Tops' magical knowledge.
It includes not only the three spells he mentioned at the beginning, but also some basic knowledge about magic.
Morion, also intrigued, taught Tops some ritual magic, wanting to see what this gifted but marginalized "wastestone" could learn.
Surprisingly, Tops actually succeeded.
He should have been able to develop his theories in the future, before he died, and bring them to fruition ahead of time.
He discovered that at the border, "magic" based on magic and "prayer" based on faith are essentially interchangeable.
Recently, he has begun to study whether it is possible to create a force field that can deflect all forms of energy attacks through some kind of ritual.
He became so engrossed in his research that he even forgot his long-held dream of "returning to the magic academy."
Unlike the original story where he died from exhaustion at his desk, thanks to Moraine's Reversal Technique, Tops's health is much better than it was in the original story.
“I plan to recommend him to the witch Serenity,” said Morion of the Ring.
He has now left the town where Tops lived and embarked on a solo journey to the "Sobbing Peninsula".
He was going there to find the sealed Great Witch Seren.
