The Abyss's Throat cleaved through the defenses from one side of the suspension bridge, while the Dark Sea Abyss unleashed swarms of bees in the city's alleyways.
After Blood Valley City's defenses were breached, the city descended into chaos.
In the narrow alley, squads of heavily armored beasts pushed their bone shields forward, while the bone throwers behind them stuffed explosive bottles into windows, eaves, and alley bends.
The flames from the explosions blew away the obstruction points one by one.
Ron didn't enter the city; he stayed at the entrance to the valley, watching the red light on the plate gradually compress towards the city center.
The area in the center of the city was marked in dark red; that was the residence of the Blood Valley City Lord and the core of the last resistance.
He gently pressed his finger on the dark red spot: "I'll go there myself."
The streets in the city center are much narrower than those on the outer ring road, with the stone buildings on both sides pressing down like a knife's edge.
The people of the Dark Sea Abyss cleared the way ahead, and the slime membrane was spread on the ground, forcing the enemies to the second floor and the roof.
Ron wasn't in a hurry. He had the Bone Throwers use explosive bottles to break through the second floor first, and then had the Heavy Armored Beasts ram the door.
The outer wall of the main mansion is the only place in Blood Valley City built with a single piece of rock, nearly two zhang high, with dense short spears stuck at the base.
Outside the gate of the mansion, there is a gentle slope of less than ten steps, the surface of which is covered with red sandstone, which is as slippery as ice when wet.
Ron glanced at it, then raised his hand to signal—the Ironback Beast would go first, carrying its bone shield and pressing down on the spear forest, bending and breaking the spears, while the slime horde behind would take the opportunity to cover the red sand slope.
As soon as the smooth surface was formed, the heavily armored beast lowered its head and charged, smashing cracks into the gate of the mansion.
When the crack expanded to half the width of the door, the defenses inside were activated.
Two rows of inner guards charged out carrying long poles, the pole tips of which were sharpened from hard horn, a specialty of Blood Valley, giving them extremely strong armor-piercing power.
The first wave of Ironback Beasts was forced back half a step, followed by Shadowscale Puppets slashing in from both flanks, their blades piercing the waist seams of their inner armor, forcibly pulling them out.
Claudia stepped over the ramp and entered the door, igniting the molten stone in her hand with all her might, burning away the seal on the lintel in one go.
The mansion gate, now devoid of its seal, was reduced to nothing but wood. Ron raised his hand and pressed down, unleashing a second charge from the heavily armored beast, leaving the entire gate wide open as if its front teeth had been pulled out.
The main mansion has a large courtyard with a circular training ground in the center, surrounded by corridors that connect to the main building.
The Blood Valley City Lord stood in the center of the training ground, holding a long halberd in his hand. The halberd blade was wide and thick, and the body of the halberd was covered with a layer of dark red metal.
He didn't move, but his foot sank, and the sand surface of the training ground immediately caved in, revealing a dense network of halberd holes. Rows of metal spikes protruded from these holes, rotating and sweeping outwards.
Ron, too lazy to argue with him, directly ordered the slime swarm to cover the training ground, covering all the spikes.
Once the spike gets stuck in the mucus, the rotation speed immediately drops, and it comes to a complete stop after a few breaths.
Claudia leaped down from the corridor, the molten stone striking the halberd hole and heating the metal stake until it glowed red-hot.
Blood Valley City Lord then raised his halberd and charged forward, the blade drawing a thick arc in the air as it cleaved directly at Ron's shoulder.
Ron raised his hand to block, and the runes on his arm guard flashed, deflecting the force of the halberd to the side.
Taking advantage of the moment when the city lord was putting away his halberd, the Shadow Scale Puppet pounced from behind, its two blades simultaneously piercing the city lord's hamstrings.
He groaned and half-knelt down. Ron's bone knife pressed down, slicing into his collarbone from the side of his neck, drawing out a gust of hot blood.
The sandy surface of the training ground was quickly soaked with blood, and the remaining inner guards collapsed when they saw the city lord fall to the ground.
The Abyss's Throat sealed off the main building's passage, while the Dark Sea Abyss cleared away any remaining resistance along the corridors, and the main mansion fell completely into Ron's hands.
He stood in the center of the training ground, looking down at the blood-red sand beneath his feet, and said calmly, "Blood Valley City, from today onwards, will be surnamed Hei."
The news of Blood Valley's fall spread faster than the wind across the wasteland.
Before Ron could even give the order to head north, the scouts at Riftstone Fortress began to retreat south.
He had no intention of giving the other side a chance to catch their breath. That very night, he sent Abyss Throat and Dark Sea Abyss ahead, while the main force followed behind with the heavy armored beasts and supply wagons.
Rift Rock Fortress is built against a cliff, with sheer cliffs on three sides and a suspension bridge on the other, with a deep valley below.
The valley floor is windy year-round, causing the suspension bridge to sway like a thin thread, making it impossible for normal marches to cross.
Ron drew two lines of attack on the map:
One way is to climb along the rock crevices on the outer side of the cliff in the Dark Sea Abyss and directly reach the back wall of the fortress;
The other option is to build a suspension bridge across the opposite cliff from the Abyss's Throat and launch an attack on the guards on the suspension bridge.
As soon as dawn broke, the climbing monsters of the Dark Sea Abyss covered the cliff walls.
They use bone hooks to grip rock crevices, carry small burst bladders on their backs, and once discovered, they simply stick to the rock surface and play dead.
On the other side of the Abyss's Throat, the Wallcutter and Shadowscale Golem carried the anchor and threw it out from the top of the opposite cliff. The anchor got stuck in the crack and tightened instantly.
The defenders on the suspension bridge noticed the commotion and were about to cut the ropes when the main force's heavy crossbow towers opened fire in advance. The chain-breaking arrows struck right at their feet, forcing them back to the center of the bridge.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the Abyss Throat zipped forward, its bone blade sweeping across the bridge, slicing off those who blocked its path and sending them tumbling down into the valley.
Meanwhile, the Dark Abyss had already climbed up to the back wall.
The climbing monster stuffed the bursting sac into a crack in the wall, then slid back up the rope to its waist.
With a deafening roar, three breaches were blasted in the rear wall of the fortress, and stones from the outer wall tumbled down the cliff.
The monsters poured in like water, first clearing out the arrow tower in the backyard, and then locking the main gate from the inside.
On this side of the drawbridge, the Abyss's Maw had already pushed to the main gate of the fortress. Ironbacks withstood the rain of arrows with their bone shields, while heavy armored beasts rammed open the lintel.
The city gate was smashed open, and the main force immediately pressed forward, covering the gate opening with swarms of slimes, sealing off all exits.
The garrison inside the fortress tried to retreat to the tower, but were intercepted from behind by the Dark Abyss.
The wall-climbing beast climbed up the tower, grabbed the window sill with one claw, and pulled the archer inside down.
The Shadowscale Puppet burrowed into the tower, a flash of blade light, and the horn on the top floor fell silent.
When Ron entered the fortress courtyard, the three armies had already met on the wall.
The flags of the Abyss's Throat and the Dark Sea's Abyss were planted side by side atop the main building, the wind howling high in the sky as if mourning the fortress.
He looked up and said in a steady voice, "Rock Rift Fortress, rejoin the ranks."
Before the flag of Riftrock Fortress had even been changed, Ron had already led his troops north.
Coldtooth Peak is the last natural barrier in the North, with snow-capped ridges all year round and winds so strong they can make your bones ache.
There is only one mountain path at the summit, less than five steps wide. To the left is a towering snow cliff, and to the right is a steep slope full of rocks. The defenders only need to block this path to hold back the entire army.
Ron didn't intend to confront them head-on. He drew two auxiliary routes on the terrain map:
A path leads the Abyss's Throat around the icefall on the east side, directly sealing off the back entrance of the mountain pass;
A path led the Dark Sea Abyss along the ice cave beneath the snow cliffs, sneaking up to the feet of the defenders.
As dusk fell, the main force pressed forward to the mountain pass.
The defenders were well-prepared, having erected a wall of ice bricks in the middle of the mountain path, with sharpened ice spears stuck into it. When the wind blew, the ice spears whistled like transparent knives.
Ron waved for the bone soldiers to fire, and a series of explosive bottles were thrown, causing countless cracks to appear on the surface of the ice wall.
The defenders immediately pushed out several thick ice plates from behind the wall and firmly blocked the breach.
The mountain wind suddenly changed direction, and a muffled sound came from the snow and mist—it was the signal from the throat of the abyss.
They had already cut a sloping path through the icefall on the east side. The climbing beast dragged the barbed chain down from above, and the end of the chain smashed into the back of the mountain path, directly blocking the way back.
Almost simultaneously, the people from the Dark Sea Abyss emerged from the ice cave. The giant crocodile lurking beneath the ice lashed its tail, overturning the ice blocks along the lower edge of the mountain path. The ground beneath the defenders collapsed into a slope, and half a squad slid down directly.
Seeing that the time was ripe, Ron ordered the heavy armored beast to charge head-on.
The bone shield pushed aside the shattered ice, and the Ironback charged forward with its head down, crushing the ice wall into a pile of ice shards.
The slime horde followed closely behind, lying prone on the rocks and snow, forcing the defenders into the middle.
The Abyss Throat burst in from the rear, while the Dark Sea Abyss surged up from below the cliff. The two forces combined, crushing the defenders of Cold Fang Peak into a mound.
Chapter 152
The wind carried short shouts of battle, followed by the crisp sound of metal clashing.
In less than fifteen minutes, only the monster army's footprints and the snow stained red remained on the mountain path.
Ron stood atop the peak, overlooking the other side of the North.
It was a much wider ice field, where the sound of the wind seemed empty and harsh.
"The North ends here."
He put away the terrain map, turned around and ordered the entire army to deploy along the southern edge of the ice field, turning Hanya Peak into a new choke point.
In the Battle of Coldfang Peak, the Northern garrison was decimated; one part perished on the mountain paths, while the other fled into the depths of the icy plains. Ron gave them no respite, ordering a pursuit that very evening.
The wind on the ice field was fiercer than in the mountain pass, and the snow pellets hit the armor with a slapping sound.
The white ground obscured the path; the only direction was the chaotic footprints and bloodstains.
The Dark Abyss led the way, their stealthy monsters burrowing beneath the snow without leaving a trace, silently closing in on their enemies. The Throat of the Abyss spread out along the southern edge of the ice plains, closing like a fan, forcing the enemy to flee north.
As soon as it got dark, the vanguard spotted the first group of fleeing soldiers.
They circled around several sleds, desperately urging the snow wolves to escape, but the wolves were terrified and ran around wildly.
A giant crocodile from the Dark Abyss overturned a sled directly from under the snow. The people protecting the sled didn't even have time to react before they were wrapped in slime and dragged into the snow.
The wall-climbing beast from the Abyss's Maw sliced through from the side, biting off the shaft of the second sled. The Shadowscale Puppet filled in, and with a flash of light, everyone on the sled fell to the ground.
Ron led the main force to the middle of the ice field, where a range of undulating snow hills lay ahead.
Behind the snowdrift were the remnants of the enemy's main force. They had built a semi-circular defensive circle with snow blocks and broken planks, trying to use the terrain to hold off the pursuers.
He didn't intend to slowly surround them; instead, he directly ordered the armored beasts and ironback beasts to clear a path.
The snow was soft, and when the herd of beasts charged through, it stirred up waves of snow that made the defensive perimeter teeter on the brink of collapse.
The Bone Throwers tossed exploding bottles behind the snow waves, the exploding heat scorching the snow into ice shards that fell and crushed people, making it impossible for them to lift their heads.
The enemy commander attempted to break out from the other side, but instead ran right into the semi-circular encirclement of the Abyss Throat.
The barbed chains of the climbing beast lay across the snow like an invisible trap, tripping up the charging cavalrymen who were thrown into a heap, man and horse tumbling together.
The Dark Abyss emerged from behind the snow hill, its swarm transforming into a black mist in the winds of the icy plains, rushing towards the gaps in the defensive perimeter.
In just a quarter of an hour, the defensive perimeter completely collapsed, and the routed soldiers scattered in all directions, with no chance of survival if they fell into the hands of anyone.
The pursuit continued into the night. The snowfield shone brightly in the moonlight, casting long shadows of the monster army across the white ground.
