Several surviving, strange fish surrounded the corpse of their companion and began to devour their dead kin and the ruins of nearby buildings. The process of devouring was accompanied by a noticeable increase in size and a change in appearance.
"Damn it, they're evolving!" the squad leader cursed, immediately notifying the other squads.
"Attention everyone, increase firepower! Don't let them devour us!" the squad leader ordered.
The soldiers adjusted their firing mode, switching from single shots to bursts, attempting to eliminate all the monster fish before they evolved. However, there were simply too many monster fish, and some always managed to escape.
A soldier was firing when he suddenly realized he was out of ammunition. He quickly changed magazines, but in those few seconds, a strange fish had already devoured three of its own kind and swelled to more than twice its original size.
"It's gotten bigger!" the soldier shouted in terror, immediately firing at the mutated fish.
The bullet struck the strange fish, but only sparked on its surface. Having absorbed the damage from the building, the fish's scales had become far harder than before, forming a protective layer similar to a carapace.
"Ordinary bullets are ineffective!" The soldier's voice was filled with obvious panic.
The squad leader immediately ordered: "Use armor-piercing rounds! Repeat, use armor-piercing rounds!"
The soldiers quickly switched ammunition, but more of the monster fish had already evolved. The effectiveness of armor-piercing rounds was also noticeably decreasing.
"Requesting fire support! Urgent request for fire support!" the squad leader shouted into the communicator.
The Self-Defense Forces began deploying more powerful weapons. Grenade launchers and machine guns were urgently sent to the front lines. Explosions echoed throughout the streets of Kyoto.
A soldier operates a grenade launcher, aiming at a giant, monstrous fish.
"Eat this!" he said through gritted teeth, pressing the launch button.
The grenade hit the strange fish precisely, blasting it to pieces. Before the soldiers could even rejoice, they discovered that the fragments from the explosion were quickly devoured by other strange fish.
"They're still merging!" a soldier exclaimed.
Two large, strange fish intertwined, their skin gradually melting and their muscle tissue intertwining.
A few minutes later, they transformed into a giant monster nearly ten meters long, with its back covered in sharp spikes and its mouth split into multiple lobes, each lobe densely packed with sharp teeth.
The captain attempted to organize the last line of defense: "All heavy firepower, concentrate! Aim for the head!"
The soldiers opened fire with all their might, but the giant monster only staggered slightly before letting out a deafening roar and charging toward the defensive line.
"Retreat! Everyone retreat immediately!" the squad leader ordered, but it was too late.
The giant monster leaped into the air and landed in the center of the defensive line, sending soldiers scattering in all directions. A tongue covered in sharp spikes shot out from the monster's mouth, wrapping around a soldier and swallowing him whole.
"Where are the reinforcements?!" a soldier shouted in despair, only to be struck by the monster's tail and his body was severed in two.
The defenses have completely collapsed.
The information was quickly relayed to PPDC headquarters.
"Intelligence confirmed! Kyoto is under a large-scale Kaiju invasion and is requesting emergency support!" the communications officer reported loudly.
The command center was in chaos.
"Deploy all available mechs immediately!" the commander ordered.
Due to a lack of funding, the Kyoto mecha base was closed several years ago. There are no combat units there, only logistics and intelligence personnel.
However, the incident happened suddenly, and nowadays, even with advanced transport aircraft, it would take at least two hours for the mechs at the Hong Kong base to reach Kyoto.
Worse still, images transmitted by reconnaissance helicopters showed that strange fish were still emerging from the sea and advancing inland towards Kyoto.
"Establish a second line of defense! Mobilize all reservists and veterans!" roared the Kyoto Self-Defense Force commander.
At the same time, traces of the strange fish were found in many places in Kyoto.
In a luxury apartment, a corporate executive had just finished a video conference and was heading to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Suddenly, the living room's floor-to-ceiling window shattered, and three small, strange fish leaped in.
The executive reacted quickly, grabbing a golf club from the corner and striking the nearest strange fish. The fish was sent flying, but two other fish pounced on him.
"Help!" His screams quickly came to an abrupt end.
Hundreds of customers were trapped inside a shopping mall not far away. Mall security guards attempted to organize a defense, using various tools and equipment within the mall to build makeshift roadblocks.
"Push those cabinets over here!" a security guard shouted.
The customers panicked; some tried to help, but most just screamed or cried in terror.
"They're coming in!" a girl suddenly screamed.
Dozens of strange fish surged into the shopping mall from the ventilation shafts and sewers, quickly attacking the nearest humans, and a bloody massacre began.
In the nightclub district, on the brightly lit streets, the intoxicated patrons were unaware of the impending danger. Strange fish silently emerged from the sewers and launched a sudden attack.
A thug was boasting to his companions about his "heroic deeds" when he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his ankle. He looked down and saw a strange fish biting his leg.
"Baka! What the hell is that?!" He drew the knife he carried with him and stabbed the strange fish fiercely.
The strange fish released its grip, but more of its companions had already surrounded it. The thug and his friends stood back to back, weapons in hand, ready to fight.
"You bastards! Come on, you stinking fish!" The thug leader brandished his steel pipe and swatted away a strange fish that lunged at him.
"Baka! I've been in this business for ten years, do you think I'm afraid of monsters like you?" another thug shouted, stabbing the eye of a strange fish with a knife.
"You bastard! Die!" the gang leader roared, repelling three strange fish in succession.
Their fight boosted morale, and several other drinkers nearby joined in, using bottles and stools to defend against the strange fish's attack.
However, they snapped back to reality when a gigantic fusion monster appeared at the end of the street.
"Damn it... what is that thing!?" The thug's voice became hoarse.
"I don't want to die... I don't want to die!" One of the thugs threw down his weapon and ran away.
"Baka! Don't run! There's still hope if we unite!" the gang leader shouted, but no one listened to him anymore.
The giant monster was upon them in a single stride, and the thug leader's eyes were filled with despair: "Baka!"
A commuter who had just finished get off work stood on the light rail platform, looking at the emergency alert on his phone with confusion.
"Kaiju invasion? Didn't they just invade Hong Kong a couple of days ago? What kind of prank is this?" he muttered to himself.
The next second, the platform glass shattered, and a strange fish lunged at him. He instinctively raised his briefcase to shield himself, and the fish's teeth sank into the leather.
He then swung his briefcase, slamming the strange fish to the ground, and then stepped on its head, crushing it until it stopped moving.
"Thank God..." he breathed a sigh of relief.
But when he looked up, his face turned deathly pale. Dozens of strange fish were rushing towards him from a distance.
Kyoto descended into chaos. The Self-Defense Forces' defenses were constantly being breached, and the strange fish rapidly infiltrated throughout the city via the sewers and rivers.
What's most disheartening is that these strange fish are constantly evolving and merging, becoming increasingly powerful.
Hong Kong has already launched an emergency aid plan, but they are still on their way.
Chapter 164 Powerful New Type of Monster
On the homeworld of the Pioneer Civilization, within a towering biomass-built spire, the Pioneer leaders gathered in the central rotunda, where projectors displayed footage of battles between Imperial Titans.
“Unbelievable, this mech is so powerful!” exclaimed a pioneering scientist.
His tentacles slid across the control panel, the image freezing on the moment when the Titan descended from the sky and a chainsaw severed the ridged tortoise shell.
“That’s no ordinary technology,” said a high-caste prophet. “Analysis shows that the energy conversion technology contained in that Titan far surpasses our understanding of that world.”
Another pioneer reached out a tentacle into the projection, magnifying the Titan's detailed close-up.
"We underestimated the creatures of that world; they had already mastered such advanced technology."
An unusual mood spread through the rotunda, and the pioneers were no longer as composed as before.
“We can’t wait any longer,” the leader decided. “We must take over that planet before humanity mass-produces these Titans.”
“Sending out even more powerful monsters is pointless,” one of the pioneers analyzed. “Even the strongest biological weapon capable of passing through the portal now is probably no match for that Titan. We need to change our strategy.”
The leader tapped the chair gently with its tentacles, lost in thought.
"Activate the parasitic program." After a moment, it made the decision.
Silence fell over the rotunda, and all the pioneers' luminous organs simultaneously turned a warning crimson.
"Are you sure you want to use that? It's the most dangerous biological weapon we've ever discovered," the science director couldn't help but question.
The leader's tentacles slammed against the control panel.
"It is precisely because of the danger that problems can be solved quickly. Can't you see that human technological advancements have already threatened our expansion plans!"
The science director no longer objected, but instead let out a low hiss.
"Activate the parasitic beast test subject." The leader issued the final order.
The biological experimental zone, buried deep beneath the Pioneer Planet, was instantly illuminated by a blinding biological light source.
Countless tiny organisms float in rows of transparent containers. They look like strange insects, but have complex nervous systems inside.
"They are perfect parasites, capable of invading the vast majority of organisms, controlling the host's behavior, and even urging the host's evolution and mutation."
The science director touched the control panel, and a small container rose out of the ground.
“We have added stronger adaptability and self-evolution mechanisms to them.”
Hours later, a large number of tiny parasites were transported to the Pacific Ocean through the wormhole. They spread rapidly and parasitized countless marine organisms.
Under the control of the pioneers, these strange fish swam together toward the Kyoto coastline.
...
On live television, a female reporter stands on a high point near the coast, reporting the situation with a serious expression.
"Breaking news! A large number of unknown creatures have suddenly appeared along the Kyoto coastline, preliminarily identified as possibly related to the Kaiju. An emergency evacuation order has been issued; all citizens are urged to..."
Halfway through her broadcast, the camera suddenly shook violently, and the reporter's expression changed from serious to horrified.
"what!!!"
A scream interrupted her, and the camera turned behind her, capturing a chilling scene—thousands of monstrous fish were devouring all living things, even merging together to form an even larger monster.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the situation is more critical than you think! These creatures seem to be able to..."
The camera shook violently again, followed by a scream from the photographer. The lens tilted upwards, and then a hideous maw bit the camera lens to pieces.
The live stream signal was interrupted.
Panic gripped the entire nation of Kyoto, with citizens glued to television and online broadcasts, desperately seeking updates on the situation in Kyoto. Major media outlets continuously reported on the disaster and the government's emergency measures, but the situation was unfolding far faster than anticipated.
Meanwhile, all the Chinese students in Kyoto were hiding inside the embassy.
