Jack Wells stood up, smiled, and hugged old Wells; the two had been friends for many years.
"Hello, my name is Ke Ling."
Ke Ling took the initiative to greet Lao Wei. In his opinion, the man in front of him was the best prosthetic doctor in Night City.
“Victor Viktor, just call me Old Viktor, that’s what they all call me.”
Old Wei nodded to Ke Ling, then gestured for her to proceed.
"Come on, let me give you a full body check-up first. I rarely do business with modified bodies like yours."
Old Wei is very honest and didn't try to take on too much responsibility right away.
Unfortunately, he hadn't really performed prosthetic body installation surgery on people with such a high degree of physical modification, because such people generally didn't use prosthetic bodies.
Ke Ling didn't hesitate and lay down on the operating table. However, although it was an operating table, it didn't feel much different to Ke Ling than going to the dentist.
"Um"
The scan was completed quickly. Looking at the report on the control panel, Old Wei pondered for a moment, without speaking immediately.
"What's wrong? Old Wei, is there something wrong with my health?"
Ke Ling started asking questions she already knew the answer to, "What health problems do you have? These are serious problems!"
"Sorry, kid, I can't guarantee the effectiveness of installing a prosthetic body on you."
Old Wei frowned. There weren't many surgeries that he felt uncertain about, but there was one right in front of him.
"Really?! Old Wei, Ke Ling just installed a brain-computer interface; any roadside beauty salon can do that!"
Before Ke Ling could speak, Jack Wells, who was standing against the wall, was the first to be surprised.
To be honest, he considered many possibilities, but he never expected that Old Wei would say "I'm not sure".
"Ke Ling, your body has been modified to be completely different from that of a human."
Old Wei looked at Ke Ling with a strange expression, though it was hidden behind his sunglasses. That's where the sunglasses came in.
"I'm sorry, although I'm not a genetics expert, I can see that your genetic makeup and basic cellular structure are completely different from those of humans."
Old Wei realized that Ke Ling's background was probably not simple, because such a degree of physical modification was not something that could be accomplished by a novice.
"Old Wei, could you please explain yourself more clearly?!"
Jack Wells was completely confused. It was just a brain-computer interface, why was it involving genetics?
"Ahem, to put it this way, from a biological point of view, it's hard to say that Ke Ling now has any relation to the human species."
At this point, Old Wei seemed worried that the two people still didn't understand, so he paused before continuing:
"To put it bluntly, Ke Ling, you're not human."
Ke Ling: ""
That doesn't have to be so blunt! It sounds like an insult.
Please read my new book! It's really important! Thank you so much, dear readers!!
Chapter 21 Shocks Old Wei
"Don't worry about changing it, Lao Wei. I know my own body."
Ke Ling stopped Lao Wei from continuing. He felt that Jack Wells was looking at him as if he were an alien.
Although it wouldn't be wrong to say that he, as a transmigrator, came from another planet, other planets in other worlds are naturally included in the meaning of "extraterrestrial".
"Are you sure, child? Once you've had the knife done, it'll be too late to regret it."
Old Wei was very responsible; he confirmed with Ke Ling several times.
"Don't worry, Old Wei."
Ke Ling gave a thumbs up. Others may not be able to regret it, but he can.
Old Wei's lips twitched. There was nothing he could do; this was a first for him too. In the past, when he performed surgery, he was the one who reassured his clients. Good heavens, now it was the other way around.
"Okay, let's begin. First, let's give each other some anesthesia."
Seeing Ke Ling's unwavering insistence, Lao Wei didn't say anything more. He had already made everything clear that it was Ke Ling's own strong request.
"No, no need for anesthesia."
However, Ke Ling raised objections again in the very first step.
There's no other way. What if he can't control that piece of flesh after the anesthesia is administered?
The prerequisite for him to have a prosthetic body is that he can control that piece of flesh and blood, making it involuntarily heal the wound quickly.
"This"
Old Wei was completely dumbfounded; this was the first time he had ever seen someone request to undergo prosthetic surgery without anesthesia.
"Don't joke around, buddy."
Jack Wells was also speechless; Ke Ling's request was a bit unreasonable.
You said you wouldn't use anesthesia, but what will the prosthetic doctor do when you're in excruciating pain during the surgery?
"Trust me, I know my own body."
Ke Ling stuck to his old story, and he was at his wit's end. Some things just can't be explained; the more you explain, the more complicated things become.
"Well."
Old Wei thought about it for a while and finally nodded. If things got out of hand later, he could just hit Ke Ling again.
Picking up the syringe, Old Wei gave himself an injection. After all, he was operating entirely by hand and needed some medication to reduce fatigue and increase stability.
"I'm starting."
Old Wei gave a reminder, and then immediately took action, slicing down with a sharp scalpel.
Ke Ling remained expressionless and motionless; this level of pain was nothing to him.
From the moment he started to grit his teeth, pain became something that Ke Ling was bound to be a constant companion, and he had to get used to it.
"Sigh~"
Jack Wells gritted his teeth. To be honest, this was the first time he had ever seen someone have a brain-computer interface implanted without anesthesia.
"Don't you feel any pain? Or are you aliens incapable of feeling pain?"
Unable to hold it in any longer, Jack Wells finally voiced his question.
"Go to hell, I'm not an alien."
Ke Ling glared at Jack Wells and forced out a sentence through gritted teeth.
Asking if it hurts at this point is pointless; of course it hurts. Ke Ling isn't really devoid of the ability to feel pain.
If the regeneration were to occur immediately, the pain would likely be only momentary, but Ke Ling currently has to control her regeneration ability.
"I knew it couldn't be that it didn't hurt. Turns out you were just pretending to be an expert by not saying a word."
Hearing that Ke Ling could only manage to squeeze out words through gritted teeth, Jack Wells immediately laughed. So this guy was in pain too.
Ke Ling rolled her eyes and then closed them, too lazy to bother with this guy anymore.
Ke Ling felt Lao Wei's movements until Lao Wei gave him an injection, at which point he released the suppression of his regenerative power.
He felt a healing force penetrating his body, which clearly indicated that the surgery was nearing its end and that Old Wei was allowing his wounds to heal.
The small wound healed quickly, neatly wrapping around the brain-computer interface.
"How are you feeling? Is there anything bothering you?"
After the surgery, Lao Wei asked Ke Ling, "This kind of surgery, which is so basic nowadays, shouldn't take much time at all."
"Hmm? I don't feel anything."
To be honest, after having a brain-computer interface implanted, Ke Ling felt nothing except for the feeling of having a foreign object in his brain.
"Of course, since the chip hasn't been inserted yet, and you'll need to get a prosthetic eye, let's choose a model."
Old Wei's words made perfect sense; it's like having a monitor after you've installed a computer.
"Forehead"
Ke Ling paused. He had already asked Jack Wells, and the cost of installing a regular brain-computer interface was very low; his money was just enough.
However, he definitely couldn't afford to get another prosthetic eye, even the cheapest, most common kind.
"Go ahead and pretend, don't be shy with me, my alien friend."
Jack Wells, standing nearby, chuckled, clearly noticing Ke Ling's financial straits.
There was nothing he could do; he, who never took money from his family, would often show that expression. Even a hero can be brought down by a penny.
"Thanks, Jack. I'll pay you back. How about I let you do the first job for free?"
Ke Ling did not refuse Jack Wells's offer; he did not think he would be unable to earn money for a prosthetic eye.
“Look at what you’re saying, buddy, I’m not that kind of person.”
Jack Wells smiled and waved his hand. He certainly wouldn't let Ke Ling work for him for free. It wasn't a matter of how much money; it was a matter of principle.
"Jack is a good guy, he'll never let you down."
Old Wei interjected, speaking to Ke Ling.
“I know that he and Mrs. Wells have helped me a lot as an outsider.”
Ke Ling nodded, then chose the cheapest prosthetic eye, a brand he had never even heard of.
"My suggestion is to switch to this one. Buy the cheapest one and consider it a gift for your new friend."
Old Wei shook his head and didn't take the worst one. Instead, he replaced Ke Ling's outfit with a new one: the Crossroads Eye Type 1, which was considered a blank item by players.
"As expected of Old Wei, so generous. The Crossroads Division is a high-end product."
Jack Wells started praising it from the side, saying that the Astray Eye was indeed a high-end product, not some unwanted plain item.
"For your sake."
