Character design is equally important.
Mashiro's character designs in the other three anime were all very well done, but when it came to her own, she just couldn't seem to get it right.
Looking at the self-portrait she had drawn in front of the mirror, Mashiro stopped writing, turned around, and asked:
"How about it?"
Ogasawara Rinko looked at it carefully and shook her head slightly:
"Indeed, self-portraits are much more difficult to paint than portraits."
Although the drawing is beautiful and the artistry is as perfect as ever, it is clearly not suitable in terms of spirit and temperament compared to the male and female protagonists of the other three animations.
To put it bluntly, in Mashiro's paintings of herself, her face is expressionless, but her eyes are full of color.
This is her now, not the her from two years ago.
The white box contains only supporting characters, which is fine; the subtle changes are hard to notice. But if the female lead is inside the pure white box, then it's not appropriate to leave it like this.
Or rather, Mashiro in the first episode and Mashiro in the last episode are in different states, but the way she draws her remains the same.
"It's still not quite right. These few images can be used for the character designs in the last episode, but the first episode doesn't have this kind of expression."
This was the fifth time it had been rejected, and Mashiro herself still couldn't figure out what the problem was.
Mashiro thought for a moment, placed the paintbrush on the table, and said softly:
"Isn't it the same? You draw it."
"Alright."
Knowing that she wasn't shirking her responsibilities and wouldn't get angry about it, Ogasawara Rinko didn't refuse and readily agreed.
I picked up a pen, sat down beside him, and started drawing character designs while watching Mashiro.
Admittedly, there is a big difference in the two people's drawing skills, but I have drawn many times in private and I feel that I am very good at drawing expressions.
A dozen minutes later, Ogasawara Rinko put down her pen, glanced at the time, and smiled helplessly.
"Sorry, I'm drawing a little slowly."
If it were Mashiro, this amount of work could be completed in about three minutes.
"It's ok."
Mashiro leaned closer and looked intently at the character design she had drawn.
On the canvas, there are four different white faces.
The top two are front views, and the bottom two are side views.
The left side of the face gives off a cool and aloof vibe, with a blank and confused look in the eyes, while the right side of the face gives off a gentle vibe, with exceptionally bright and attractive eyes.
The contrast between the two is striking; they have the same face, yet they give the impression of being twin sisters.
but--
"Is this me?"
“Not entirely.” Rinko Ogasawara glanced at Mashiro and said with a smile, “Art comes from reality, but it is not a direct copy.”
"Most of our Musashino animations are adaptations of live-action dramas, but adaptations are not drawn from photographs."
"Well... specifically in terms of visuals, sometimes we exaggerate appropriately."
"For example, the facial expressions are distorted and the shadows are obvious; many exaggerated expressions do not appear in reality."
"Real people's expressions are often very subtle, and many people have introverted personalities, but when it comes to animation, you can't have all the characters with blank expressions, can you?"
“You drew the character designs for the other three animations very well, but Pure White is a bit different. Perhaps in your own eyes, you are exactly the same as you were two years ago, without any change.”
"However, in everyone's eyes, Mashiro has changed a lot compared to two years ago, and there are still quite a few differences."
Have I changed a lot?
Mashiro fell into deep thought, as events from the past two years kept flashing through her mind.
The animation settings are not the same as reality, but there are also many similarities.
I'm a junior this year, a senior next year, and I'll get married the year after.
What did I look like in the paintings back then?
“I have photos of Masamune taken two years ago on my phone, which I can use as a reference.”
"Two years from now, on our wedding day, we have no reference points. What are your suggestions?"
Wow...! You said it so naturally. It's really heartbreaking for a single auntie like me who's over 30.
"Two years from now, Mashiro should be nineteen years old, right?"
"Ah."
Nineteen years old, what a young bride.
It hurts so much, my heart hurts so much!
"Mashiro must have been very happy back then."
"However, you may not be able to fully understand this feeling right now."
"If you're looking for advice, why not ask one of the newlyweds in our company who just got married this year?"
"By the way! Let's take this opportunity to ask couples who are deeply in love and those who have just started dating."
"Sure." Mashiro nodded gently. "Together?"
"Of course, let's try to get the pure white character design all done today," Ogasawara Rinko said with a smile.
Compared to Mashiro herself, the other characters don't have as much potential for growth, don't have several different changes, and have very distinct personalities, making them less difficult to draw.
……
"Based on our expectations, all four anime series this quarter will need to hire professional voice actors, and there will be plenty of opportunities and time. Now we're distributing the scripts. After you've chosen your roles, get back to practicing and try to land those roles."
In the second-floor lobby of Musashino, Karasuma Chitose received four scripts from Masamune, his heart filled with excitement.
coming!
I already knew that one series would feature Mashiro as the main character and the other would feature Azuki as the main character.
But the other two animations also need to hire voice actors, which is a pleasant surprise.
With four anime series, I should be able to snag a female lead role at least once. Even if the female lead isn't an option, the second or third female lead would do.
"President, hasn't this quarter just begun? Why are you starting voice actor auditions so early?"
"The selection process is still a long way off, it will take at least twenty or thirty days. The reason we gave you the script so early is simply because there are too many anime this quarter that need to hire voice actors, so we're giving you an adjustment period in advance. Also, we need to ask the voice actors outside the company that we have our eye on to reserve their schedules in advance."
"Thank you, we will prepare carefully."
Karasuma Chitose sat on the sofa and quickly flipped through the script he had just received.
Pure White, the female lead is Mashiro, the male lead is the company president himself, and the important supporting character is Nanami. There is no room for him to perform unless he betrays Nanami, but it is difficult for him to perform better than her. PASS!
Bakuman, the female protagonist is Azuki, the male protagonist is manga artist Mashiro Moritaka, eh... let's continue with PASS!
Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-, the female protagonist is Emilia, it's an isekai anime, and my acting skills are unlikely to surpass others, so I'm just an alternative.
Back to Seventeen, the female protagonist, Chizuru Hishiro, seems to have seen this person somewhere before.
Huh...? That's the name of the new person in the finance department upstairs, isn't it? Is that really her? She's the top choice!
If it really is her, many people will probably seek her advice later.
With her guidance and careful observation of her personality, and after imitating her for a few days, I should be able to act very well.
No! She's quite busy with work. If we book all her schedules and block everyone else's way, making her only guide us, wouldn't that secure the role?
Thinking of this, Karasuma Chitose could not contain his excitement and immediately rushed out of the hall and went straight upstairs.
"Your Majesty, where are you going?" Masamune asked instinctively.
"I'm going to find Chizuru Himeragi."
As soon as he finished speaking, Karasuma Chitose realized he had said too much and quickly quickened his pace.
These kinds of things are always first come, first served; if you're slow, you miss out.
Seeing that many of the newcomers looked hesitant, clearly not having the audacity to openly snatch the spotlight, Masamune couldn't help but smile and say:
"If you want to go up and find a proxy, then go ahead, don't worry too much."
"Hiya herself is too busy with work to voice her own characters, but she is also very interested in who will voice her."
"Thank you very much, President!"
Soon, only Shizuka Sakaki, Nanami Aoyama, and Miho Azuki remained in the hall.
Azuki didn't go because she has her own character of the same name to rely on, and she needs to devote all her energy to that, so she can't be distracted by anything else.
"Aren't you going? Shizuka, Nanami."
“I like the character Rem,” Nanami Aoyama said with a smile. “Let them have the seventeen-year-olds.”
“I’d like to try playing the role of the president himself in Pure White. If the competition is too fierce, Mashiro is also an option,” Shizuka Sakaki pondered.
"Alright."
Masamune nodded slightly, while unconsciously thinking:
Even though the casting requirements for her and Mashiro's roles were clearly stated, Chitose didn't seem to care at all. Was it because she didn't notice, or because she subconsciously felt that she couldn't compete with the others?
However, that makes sense; compared to others, she really doesn't have any advantages.
Unfortunately, with four anime series being produced simultaneously that season, along with manga work, neither Mashiro nor I had any free time to play the lead role.
Otherwise, you must play yourself; that would be even more interesting.
"It's quite difficult for a female supporting male role. Our voices are also quite different. With the previous roles in Revenge and Shirobako, I want to choose a voice actor with a similar voice for my own role this time."
"You can try the role of Mashiro. She has fewer lines and a lower voice, so it's hard to tell the difference when dubbing her."
"Understood, I'll try both of them then," Shizuka Sakaki said with a smile.
