General Ryan led him through the base to a facility hidden deep underground. Shen You immediately spotted the captured Superman.
Superman was now locked in a fortified room, strapped to an electric chair. His blue T-shirt was torn in several places, and he was covered in dirt. He sat there with his eyes closed and head tilted to one side, looking as if he were unconscious.
However, after activating Ultra Vision and scanning once, Shen You immediately laughed.
Da Chao is perfectly fine, he's not sick at all. He's just pretending to be unconscious.
Shen You quickly guessed what was going on.
Everyone says Superman is a brute, but a brute isn't a good cook. Superman probably already knew there was a group of people eyeing him all along, and deliberately took this opportunity to pretend to be outmatched so they would capture him, thus allowing him to meet the mastermind behind the scenes.
Shen You withdrew his gaze and stole a glance at General Ryan beside him. The old man, watching Superman strapped to the electric chair, was still unable to stop his lips from curving upwards in a wild smile, seemingly basking in the glory of having captured Superman, completely unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
"Why haven't you started the interrogation yet?" Shen You asked.
“We’re waiting for an expert,” General Ryan said. “It was that expert’s plan that helped us capture Superman. He’s on his way and should be here in twenty minutes.”
General Ryan then began issuing orders: "Don't stop the gas! Don't let this alien wake up! Ha, this guy doesn't seem so 'super' anymore."
Seeing his smug look, Shen You suddenly began to look forward to how he would react when he discovered that Da Chao's health bar was actually full and he was just pretending to be unconscious the whole time.
Superman clearly didn't need him to worry. In contrast, he was now more concerned about what Brainiac had said earlier.
They sneaked into the base's server room and had Pal conduct a thorough search of the entire server network. Unfortunately, they found no trace of Old Bu.
However, there were some unexpected discoveries.
There was a restricted area within the base, classified as "top secret," located on the fourth basement level. Its contents were inaccessible even from the main server. Only General Ryan had permission to enter that room.
This piqued Shen You's curiosity somewhat.
He silently slipped down and landed in the room that was designated as a restricted area, and then suddenly realized what was happening.
Alien objects.
This entire room contains traces of extraterrestrial objects collected from around the world over the long years.
Shen You was even surprised to find an exoskeleton-like suit of armor in the room.
However, a closer look reveals that it is not a traditional exoskeleton. Rather, it is a high-risk technology that requires a complete link between humans and machines, more like a RoboCop.
The equipment is named "Zero Armor".
A code name quickly came to Shen You's mind.
Metal Man.
Powered by a Kryptonite heart, he is one of Superman's greatest enemies. Superman has suffered many losses at his hands, and has even had a near-death experience.
A soldier named John Coburn became one with the "Zero Armor," transforming into the kryptonite-powered nightmare from the Superman story.
A quick scan revealed to Shen You that the Zero Armor's ability to fight Superman wasn't solely due to Kryptonite. The armor's design itself had many merits, and traces of alien technology of unknown origin could be seen within it.
With a thought, Shen You revealed the Time-Space Bracelet.
Just like the glasses that Sai Rabbit uses to transform are usually stored in his bracelet, the Time-Space Bracelet also comes with a subspace. Its capacity is limited and can't hold large items like airplanes or tanks, but it can easily hold small things.
With the bracelet's built-in subspace activated, he directly stuffed the entire suit of armor into the bracelet.
Unwittingly, they nipped a future mortal enemy in the bud for Superman and Supergirl.
Anyway, when General Ryan finds out that something is missing, the blame will fall on Waller, and it won't be his problem.
His gaze swept around again, and he was surprised to find a cabinet displaying sparkling green stones, which turned out to be kryptonite.
In the original story, after Krypton exploded, many Kryptonite fragments fell to Earth, which was the main source of Kryptonite that the villains used to fight Superman.
It seems that General Ryan's men also unearthed Kryptonite. They identified it as an alien element, but they may not yet know that it is a superhuman weapon, so they are just collecting it for research purposes.
After thinking for a moment, Shen You casually poured all the kryptonite in the cabinet into the bracelet space.
Stealing one thing is the same as stealing two, and Waller will still take the blame anyway, so why not take it?
Doing good deeds anonymously eliminates another deadly threat. To be fair, Shen You felt it wouldn't be unreasonable for the future Superman to kowtow to him.
Chapter 79 Interrogation Superman
Shen You was happily touching the equipment below when the "expert" that General Ryan had mentioned arrived.
No introduction was needed at all; that bald head, so shiny it was like a mirror, was practically the visitor's business card.
Lex Luthor, Superman's number one fan, has been both a supervillain and a superhero, and considers himself the smartest person on Earth.
“You’re late,” General Ryan said curtly.
"Sorry, there was a bit of traffic on the way, and I still have a lot of things to take care of. But don't worry, now that I'm here, everything will be taken care of properly."
Lex Luthor walked up to the one-way glass window where Superman was being held and squinted.
"So this is the 'Superman,' the invulnerable alien. Ha, I thought he would be taller."
A soldier came over to report: "Sir, the high-voltage electricity is completely useless! 100,000 volts of high-voltage electricity has absolutely no effect."
While sitting in the chair, seemingly unconscious, Da Chao's eyelids twitched almost imperceptibly.
I thought to myself, "Oh? So they were just electrocuting me?"
Oh no, I didn't even realize if it was too late for me to start acting now?
“Then let’s switch to 300,000 volts first,” Lex Luthor said calmly. “Let’s see how high his voltage tolerance is.”
The researcher sought General Ryan's approval with a wink, and only after the general nodded did he increase the voltage as instructed.
A powerful electric current, almost enough to scorch any ordinary living being, swept through Superman's body. With crackling sounds, the current surged like a raging torrent. Superman, who had been "unconscious" just a second ago, immediately awoke, his eyes wide, his expression contorted in pain as he groaned, "Ughhh!"
However, the defenses were still not breached.
The 300,000 volts of electricity only resulted in a spectacular "MISS" on Superman. It's quite a feat for Superman's convincing acting skills; he really did a convincing job.
To be honest, as a Kryptonian who grew up under the yellow sun, the concept of "pain" might be a bit distant for Superman. It's truly remarkable that he could act so realistically; this performance deserves an Oscar.
The researcher shut off the power. Da Chao also stopped groaning, tilting his head to one side with his neck lolling out, looking like he was about to be electrocuted.
However, no one knew that while Superman appeared to have his eyes closed, he was actually secretly scanning everyone with his X-ray vision.
First, he memorized the faces of everyone in the room, and then scanned the business cards in his pocket—if he had any.
Then there was the base's structure, its weaponry, and the pile of long guns and cannons pointed at him through the wall in the next room. But he knew those toys were useless to him.
The only thing in the entire base that he couldn't see through was a facility buried underground, where a large amount of lead blocked his X-ray vision.
“It looks like it’s working,” General Ryan said happily.
He was afraid that these aliens were truly invincible. Being able to withstand 300,000 volts of electricity is certainly incredible, but it at least shows that human weapons can inflict damage.
However, Leigh was clearly more suspicious. Superman's acting was so convincing that it seemed to have aroused some of his suspicions.
“No, we need to try increasing the voltage again,” said Lai Tu. “Let’s try 500,000 volts this time.”
Superman listened intently the entire time, afraid he might not realize the performance was too slow once the "voltage" was turned on. The moment Leon Lai spoke, Superman held his breath, opening his mouth to shout.
Unexpectedly, the outer door was suddenly pushed open, and a black man in a white coat barged in, shouting angrily, "Stop! All of you, stop!"
The researcher's hand was already touching the start button when he heard this, so he quickly withdrew it from the control panel. Da Chao almost cried out "Ughhh!" again, but realizing the situation had changed, he quickly swallowed the scream back down.
Da Chao thought to himself, "That was close! Luckily I reacted quickly. Otherwise, if I had yelled before the switch was even turned on, I would have given myself away."
“Dr. Irons.” Luther glanced at him.
Dr. Irons was furious: "Am I seeing things? You're using the electric chair to torture people? This is inhumane and cannot be tolerated anywhere!"
“Correction, Doctor, that’s not a ‘person,’ just an alien that happens to look human,” Luther said expressionlessly. “He has no human rights.”
"Fine, then I quit. At least I won't be your accomplice." Dr. Irons slammed the door shut in anger and left. "I resign!"
Da Chao sat in his chair and glanced at the furious doctor again, developing a rather favorable impression of him.
Superman was deeply moved when he saw that the doctor had given up his job for him. He almost couldn't resist the urge to crash through the wall and fly out to tell him that it was okay, that he hadn't even lost a drop of blood, and that it wasn't really torture.
“Alright, now let’s talk about the aliens,” Luther said.
Superman breathed a sigh of relief.
Finally, I don't have to act anymore.
"Where are you from?"
“I consider myself an Earthling.” Superman raised his head, feigning weakness.
"But you are not. You are an outsider, and most likely have ulterior motives."
“I have no ulterior motive. I just want to do what I can, to make a contribution or something,” Superman said, “like all the warriors in this room.”
"what."
Luther sneered.
"Let's be frank. We all know you're here for some reason, aliens. I don't know what it is yet, but I will find out."
“I really didn’t,” Superman said sincerely. “I just want to have a good talk. I’m not new here; I grew up on Earth. There’s nothing that can’t be understood through conversation.”
"Put away your arrogance. I know you're strong, and many weapons can't hurt you. But so what? You're still obediently tied to that chair, aren't you? You don't even have the right to stand and talk to me."
Superman thought for a moment, then snapped his hands free from the several shackles that bound him to the chair and stood up.
Luther: "?"
Soldiers: “?”
and many more.
Did he just stand up from the electric chair?
Luther was the first to react, immediately shouting, "Poison gas! Release the poison gas now! Before he comes out!"
“Don’t worry about Dr. Luther,” General Lane quickly regained his composure. “That room is a fortress; it can withstand even a direct rocket hit. He’s not that easy to deal with.”
Clam!!?"
Before the general could finish speaking, everyone stared wide-eyed as Superman walked straight out of his so-called "fortress-like wall."
Yes, that's right, he just walked out normally. Superman smashed through the interrogation room wall with his body and stood among the crowd.
"Alright." Superman looked around. "Now, should we be able to talk face-to-face?"
The researcher in front of the control panel had a mouth so big it could fit a pineapple.
