Hua Xin's sudden appearance that day didn't disrupt Luo Wei's normal life. For a while afterward, everything went as usual. He went to class as usual, and occasionally he would run into Sister Hua, who was also getting up early for work. The police station and No. 3 Middle School were in the same direction. After school, he would still wander around Green Vine City as Superman, flying around the entire city and randomly selecting a few lucky people to send to the police station with food and lodging. It was during this period of crackdown that the entire underground industry in Green Vine City was in turmoil.
In the past, Luo Wei really didn't want to become a superhero. Perhaps influenced by the bombing and Liu Beisan, he now takes time to go for a walk every day because he might be able to save a family or a life with just a few casual strolls.
During this time, he went to see Qingyi, who said that the South City District was more peaceful than ever before. This might be related to Liu Beisan's arrest, or it might be because the appearance of Superman made criminals afraid. Even the number of pickpockets on the street had decreased significantly. In previous years, entertainment venues in the South City District had a lot of theft cases, but there had been almost none recently because they knew that there was a person flying in the sky who could appear at any time.
What instills such fear in criminals is not only Luo Wei's formidable abilities, but also his brutal methods. He never hesitates to confront evil, and among his "fast, accurate, and ruthless" tactics, ruthlessness is paramount. Almost everyone he has apprehended never wants to be caught again, because he only ensures that the person is delivered alive to the police station; what happens to them afterward is anyone's guess.
Few people knew the name Superman at first, after all, Lowe was always quick and ruthless in his work, giving criminals no chance to react. It should be said that those criminals were not worth his attention. Every time he caught a criminal, it was like catching chicks, one in each hand. If they were more troublesome, they might take hostages, then he would use his super speed to bring them to the police station along with the hostages.
However, the residents of Green Vine City knew that this superhero who descended from the sky to fight criminals was the mysterious figure in the previous Old Town bombing. Later, Lowe inadvertently mentioned his Superman code name to several victims. This code name spread from one person to ten, ten to a hundred, and gradually throughout the city. Now everyone knows that the figure flying at high speed in the sky is not just a bird, but could also be Superman.
The word "Superman" gradually appeared on the front page of major newspapers and became a topic of conversation for many people after dinner. After all, Superman was the first true superhero in Green Vine City, unlike Blue Robe who only belonged to the south of the city. The former's scope of justice extended to the entire Green Vine City.
At the same time, most people are aware that Superman's incredible efficiency stems from his immense power. His super speed, ability to fly at will, and unparalleled strength—any one of these abilities alone would be enough to make an ordinary person a superhero. Now that all these abilities are concentrated in one person, some are beginning to worry about the potential harm that could result if such a powerful individual were to lose control.
"Hello, Captain Liang Zhongping, I'm a reporter from the Evening News. I'd like to ask you some questions. Is this a convenient time for you?"
"Hurry up and tell me, I need to hurry."
"Is Superman an official member of the government?"
"Does the authorities have any information about Superman's identity, or have they spoken with him?"
"Uh, sorry, that's confidential, I refuse to answer. However, I can assure you that Superman won't do anything out of line."
"Captain Liang, is your guarantee on behalf of the official authorities or your personal opinion?"
"Individual." The tone was impatient.
"So Superman actually poses a potential threat. When I came here, I interviewed some people who had been arrested by him, and they all thought Superman's methods were too brutal."
"Are you trying to trick me?! Get out of here, or you'll be obstructing official business."
"Alright, alright, viewers, Captain Liang seems to be in a bad mood. We'll go interview some residents of Green Vine City to see what they think of Superman."
“Superman? It’s a good thing for Green Vine City that someone is upholding justice. Those parasites should be uprooted.”
"He is a superhero!"
"It's hard to say. Superman is actually an uncontrollable entity. He is very powerful, but if he gets out of control, he can be more dangerous than a criminal."
"I don't want to talk about this; Superman might be listening nearby."
On the television screen, after Liang Zhongping chased away the evening newspaper reporter, he interviewed about a dozen passersby. The interviewees gave different accounts and took several different stances.
Luo Wei sat on the sofa, watching the content being played on the television.
"It's unbelievable that anyone would think there's something wrong with Superman. I think his existence is clearly a good thing for Green Vine City!"
Beside him, Wang Zikai was playing Tetris. Upon hearing the interview, he raised his head indignantly.
"China has over a billion people, and Green Vine City alone has more than 20 million. It's normal for everyone to have different opinions. It would be abnormal if everyone thought the same way."
Luo Wei didn't care too much about other people's opinions. If he really cared, he wouldn't have chosen to go out and fight criminals during this period, exposing himself to the public eye.
"That's true, Lao Luo, you're becoming more and more mature in your speech."
Wang Zikai patted his good friend on the shoulder.
"That's nonsense."
Luo Wei touched his nose and asked, "Are you sure you're okay? I remember you seemed to have inhaled a lot of smoke. Why were you discharged so soon? Shouldn't you have been observed for a while longer?"
"What the hell? I'm already better. If I hadn't left the hospital sooner or later, those Western doctors would have ripped me off. Hospital stays are so expensive, I stayed for half a month."
Wang Zikai complained.
"Oh, so that's how hospitals are these days."
Luo Wei said candidly, then muttered, "Unbeknownst to us, it's already been half a month since the bombing, and Superman has been in the public eye for half a month as well."
"What are you mumbling about?"
Wang Zikai continued, "Let's go out and have some fun tonight. Your parents aren't back yet, it would be a waste not to go out and have some fun."
"Where?"
Luo Wei stretched and slumped on the sofa, asking.
"I heard there's a haunted house in the suburbs that's really popular lately, with people going there every day. I'm thinking of going with Lao Chen and the others to check it out. Do you want to come?"
Wang Zikai said.
"I'd better not go. If there are too many people in a haunted house, is it still a haunted house? Besides, I need to write something tonight. Let's go next time."
Luo Wei shook his head. A group of people going to a haunted house is less exciting than him catching criminals. When many people go to a haunted house, is it the ghosts scaring people or people catching ghosts?
"Forget it, I heard there are ghosts haunting that place, and rumors say several people disappeared there. It's too exciting."
Wang Zikai muttered the second half of his sentence, and Luo Wei, who was next to him, didn't listen carefully. He was thinking about where to go for a stroll that night.
Chapter 21: I Don't Need Pendants
As night fell, Luo Wei made an excuse to stay home and write, and did not go to the haunted house with Wang Zikai. In fact, he planned to change into his combat uniform and continue to stroll around the city. His crackdown efforts had indeed reduced crime significantly, but some people were still willing to take risks, otherwise there would not be any daily gains.
Tonight was just like any other night. Not long after he went out, he caught a group of thugs who were trying to break into a convenience store. They were a bunch of good-for-nothing delinquents, the youngest being seventeen and the oldest no more than twenty. There are quite a few people like this in the Guangnan area, some of whom even steal the batteries from electric bikes.
Many people lock their cars in front of their homes, and when they go out the next day, the car is still there, but when they try to ride it, they find that the battery has been stolen. Although a battery only costs about a hundred yuan and can be sold for a few dozen yuan, battery theft is a common occurrence. There are even gangs that specialize in stealing batteries for a living. Their targets are usually multiple communities. They take the stolen batteries out to sell in one night, and then these thugs will stop for a while, during which time they go to entertainment venues to spend money. After they run out of money, they come back to continue their old ways.
The authorities are having a major headache about this. They make arrests every day, but unfortunately, there are too many of them, and they are a group of repeat offenders. They keep arresting them, but they can't catch them all.
"Be honest with me."
Under the moonlight, Luo Wei, carrying two people in each hand, landed in the backyard of the police station. He looked up at the building and saw that several rooms on the second and third floors were still lit, indicating that there were still people on night duty. He put down the four terrified thieves in his hands, turned around to leave, but heard footsteps coming from the corner behind him.
"Stop, don't move."
A clear, magnetic female voice called out to her, accompanied by the sound of a gun being cocked.
Luo Wei recognized the voice and turned his head to see Hua Xin emerging from the dimly lit corner under the moonlight. However, he asked with a puzzled look, "Who are you? What can I do for you?"
"Criminal Investigation Division, Hua Xin."
Seeing that he hadn't left, Hua Xin put down the gun in her hand, tucked it into her belt, and said with a smile, "Superman, I've been investigating you for so long, and I'm finally lucky enough to meet you in person."
“If you squat here every night, one day you will get what you deserve.”
Luo Wei smiled. In fact, he had noticed that Hua Xin had been lurking in the corner all this time, but he always walked away quickly, giving her no chance to react.
"So you knew I was here all along. I thought you were hiding it well."
Hua Xin blushed slightly with embarrassment, but her expression immediately softened. She said, "We rarely see each other, why don't we go inside and talk?"
As she spoke, she pointed her slender, white finger to the police station entrance.
"If it's about joining a guild or organization, you can ask Captain Liang. I've already told him I won't join any organization; I prefer to work alone."
Luo Wei didn't go in, nor did he bother. Going in would only lead to discussions about joining the organization, which would be of no use to him. He might as well take advantage of the darkness and grab a few more people.
"An individual's strength can never match that of a group. A ship sailing alone on the ocean is easily capsized by the waves. But whether you join an organization or not is your business; I'm here for something else."
And so it came.
Hua Xin frowned, her eyes, as clear as a lake, looking at the thugs on the ground pretending to be unconscious. She raised her long, slender, white leg and kicked one of them. "Stop playing dead, get up now!"
"Never mind, let's go inside and talk."
Luo Wei raised an eyebrow as he looked at the groaning thugs on the ground.
"Hey, Xiao Hua, you didn't tell me Superman was here too. If I had known, I would have brought that box of famous Chinese tea that Director Zhu gave me. It's really good tea. Should I go back and get it now?"
On the second floor, there is a separate office.
Liang Zhongping, holding a thermos, had just pushed open the door and saw Luo Wei in his dark blue battle suit when his smile froze. He turned to leave.
"Uncle Liang, be serious."
Hua Xin frowned and said unhappily.
"Alright, let's skip the tea and get down to business."
Liang Zhongping looked at Luo Wei again and said with a smile, "It seems like we haven't seen each other since we met about half a month ago in Liu Beisan's case."
"Actually, it's not really like that, I see you every day."
Luo Wei sat down on the sofa and started fiddling with the golden toad tea pet on the table.
"How could I forget? You've been sending a lot of criminals to us every day lately, and the bureau's performance has skyrocketed. Director Zhu has been thinking of rewarding you, but you haven't shown up, so we haven't had the chance."
Liang Zhongping didn't sit on the sofa, but pulled up a stool and sat opposite him. He rubbed his hands together somewhat awkwardly in front of him. After all, the Superman in front of him often carried out justice, but those two brutal and bloody executions were still vivid in his mind.
"Uncle Liang, let's stop with the nonsense."
Hua Xin appeared calm and natural; it was her first time meeting Superman.
"Okay, Superman, actually we called you here today because there's something quite important that might affect your future reputation and superhero career."
As Liang Zhongping spoke, he started brewing tea and continued, "I don't know if you saw today's news, but it was the evening paper's interview with passersby. Everyone had a different opinion about you."
"Looked."
Luo Wei understood why the two had come to him.
"So what do you think? After all, this matter has had a significant impact on you."
Liang Zhongping asked, and Hua Xin, sitting on the chair to his left, also looked at Luo Wei.
"Captain Liang, if a criminal questions your ability and thinks you can't catch the real culprit, would you still take on the case?"
Luo Wei didn't answer, but instead asked a question.
"Of course I will continue to investigate the case. What do I care about the criminals?"
Liang Zhongping returned.
"That's my answer too. What the people think is none of my business. I'm not arresting people for profit, it's just out of interest. And I haven't harmed any innocent people, so why should I care about what others think?"
Lowe's answer surprised the two men, and they didn't know how to respond for a moment. He continued, "Does Batman care about what the citizens of Gotham think? Maybe he used to, but now he's grown up and matured. He knows that what he's doing is right, and that's enough for him. What does the opinion of the people of Gotham have to do with him?"
"I understand what you mean, but we officials need to consider an uncertainty."
Hua Xin sorted out her thoughts and replied.
"Actually, what you care about isn't what the citizens of Green Vine City think of me, but whether I pose a potential threat, right?"
Luo Wei had already seen through their intentions and directly exposed them.
