Chapter 8 Potions and Alchemists
Ma Li also put in his best effort.
However, the off-road vehicle did not encounter any attacks along the way.
In fact, what caused him the most trouble were the ubiquitous trees, which became increasingly dense as he went deeper.
Ma Li often finds himself unable to proceed while driving, so he has to reverse and change direction to continue driving.
Not only does it waste time, but it also requires taking a long detour.
If it weren't for the compass in his hand, he would probably have been completely disoriented long ago.
But in any case, after nearly four hours of driving, he still managed to drive out of the forest before dawn.
The good news didn't stop there; the unsettling shadow behind them had vanished without a trace, just as silently as it had appeared.
Ma Li could already see the field ridges and villages ahead, but they were not quite the same as he remembered.
Although there are roads here, they are not gray cement roads, but dirt roads trodden by people and livestock, with tire tracks and footprints everywhere.
There were no utility poles or agricultural tractors along the roadside, nor were there any red brick houses or villas painted with advertising slogans.
Instead, there are small wooden houses with thatched roofs, as well as sheep pens and cattle sheds enclosed by wooden fences, making the whole village look very primitive.
After the series of events last night, Ma Li was much calmer about the scene before him.
In fact, he had even considered worse scenarios.
For example, the chestnut-haired girl and her people all live in the trees, after all, elves...most of them love nature.
Moreover, he also managed to meet other people there, just as he had hoped.
They were two human men dressed as militiamen, one of whom looked quite old, and the other who was clearly just an adult with a youthful face. They had obviously noticed the SUV that was rapidly approaching.
The younger one turned and ran back into the village, presumably to warn others, while the older militiamen gripped their thick, pointed sticks tightly.
Not wanting to cause trouble, Ma Li stopped about thirty meters away and then opened the passenger door.
The chestnut-haired girl leaped down and ran over. After a brief exchange, she stood on tiptoe and waved her arms vigorously, signaling Ma Li to follow.
By the time the two men entered the village, many villagers had been woken from their sleep by the young militiamen, which even caused a small disturbance, but it was quickly quelled. The initial panic then turned into curiosity, and many people secretly tiptoed to peek in their direction.
However, the roar of the engine and the black smoke billowing from the exhaust pipe made them hesitant, and most people just watched from a distance without daring to approach.
The chestnut-haired girl jogged all the way to a small wooden house with cherry trees on the west side of the village. She pushed open the door but did not go in. Instead, she turned around and ran back to knock on the driver's car door.
Ma Li tucked the Type 92 pistol into his waistband and got out of the car.
He had barely put one foot on the ground when the chestnut-haired girl grabbed him again and dragged him impatiently into the house.
After spending a short time together, Ma Li had a general understanding of this "hitchhiker" he had met on the road. This guy was undoubtedly an impatient person who did everything in a hurry. He had amazing execution ability, but he was also inevitably a bit reckless.
After entering the room, the chestnut-haired girl simply took the longbow off her back, casually hung it on the wall, and then plunged under the bed, leaving only her buttocks sticking out.
She rummaged around inside for a while, and when she climbed out, she was carrying a rather old-looking deerskin bag. The chestnut-haired girl shook off the dust from the deerskin bag, opened it, and inside were two small glass bottles with slender necks and pointed bottoms wrapped in linen, with elegant and intricate silver patterns covering the sides.
Her careful movements revealed that the two small bottles were quite valuable; one contained a bright green liquid, while the other was rose red.
She put the small emerald green bottle back into the deerskin bag, then pulled the cork off the other bottle, and as if making some kind of decision, drank the rose-colored liquid inside in one gulp.
Then her body tilted and she fell straight onto the floor.
His eyes were closed, his face was pale, and he was curled up in pain.
Ma Li was also startled by her appearance, and couldn't understand why she would take poison to commit suicide after finally getting home safely.
However, now was clearly not the best time to find the answer. Ma Li quickly reviewed the first aid knowledge he had acquired in his mind and was preparing to induce vomiting.
But the next moment, the chestnut-haired girl did a sit-up and sat up from the ground.
"Uh, are you alright?"
Ma Li blurted it out subconsciously, not expecting a reply, but to his surprise, the chestnut-haired girl shook her head.
"I'm fine, just a slight magical backlash. Ordinary people experience some side effects when using magic potions, and it's said to be especially strong the first time..."
She stopped abruptly halfway through her sentence, then suddenly opened her eyes and looked at Ma Li, who was standing there dumbfounded.
The two stared at each other for a moment, then Ma Li hesitated and said, "You..."
"I did it! I did it!" The chestnut-haired girl leaped to her feet, showing no trace of her previous weakness. Even the freckles on either side of her nose were flushed with excitement. "I knew it! The animal communication potion would work!"
"Animal communication drug?"
"Aren't you an alchemist? Haven't you heard of the Animal Communication Potion? This kind of potion was created to allow people from different places to communicate freely!"
“Judging from the name, it’s clearly not for that purpose,” Ma Li said. “Also, why did you say I’m an alchemist?”
“It’s obvious that you possess a very powerful alchemical creation,” the chestnut-haired girl said enviously. “It even has a more beautiful voice than a bard.”
"Uh...you mean that SUV outside?"
“Off-road vehicle? Is that what it’s called?” The chestnut-haired girl thought for a moment. “Although I don’t understand it, those three words must have some special meaning for you.”
"No, that's just what everyone calls it in my hometown."
"........."
“Alright.” The chestnut-haired girl wiped her dirty little hands on her clothes a couple of times, then stretched them out in front of Mali. “I am Charles, a hunter from Whitewood Village, and also the vice-captain of the militia. Um… I was very grateful for your help in the canyon before.”
"I've been chased by those wretched goblins all day, and I can't shake them off. They even forced me into Blackrock Canyon, which is a forbidden land that even gods can't set foot in. Ah, thank goodness I met you, otherwise I would have been in big trouble. By the way, you don't look like you're from the continent of Revatres. Are you from the Western Continent or the Southern Islands?"
