Chapter 45 The Quarrelsome Siblings
Chapter 45 The Quarrelsome Siblings
Melissa let out a muffled groan, staggering back several steps before regaining her footing. Then she roared, "Again!"
Renee was awakened from her bed by the sounds of fighting outside. She was already used to this kind of scene; in fact, it had been happening every day for the past few months.
Moreover, he would spar with someone twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Even if he was exhausted after cutting down trees in the forest, he would still grab someone to fight and hone his martial arts skills.
Renee didn't know why she was so energetic.
In contrast, these past few months have been very dull for her, like being stuck in a quagmire.
Renee herself was a shepherdess, so she wasn't too bothered by rural life. However, she entered the magic academy to become an alchemist, escape poverty, and improve her family's life. Now, she feels that she is getting further and further away from that dream.
She also wanted to leave Baimu Village and return to the capital to continue her studies, but unfortunately her teacher had recently gone mad again.
If we're talking about who in this village still firmly believes that Mali will definitely come back, Charles is number one, and Levi is undoubtedly number two, and he can even compete with number one for second place.
When the three-month period had just ended, the old alchemist did waver, but he quickly hypnotized himself, firmly believing that this was a test from Master Mali for them.
Renee hadn't read Journey to the West, otherwise she probably would have thought that Levi was somewhat similar to the monk Xuanzang, who was determined to go to the Western Paradise to obtain the Buddhist scriptures.
The female student sighed and gently stroked the book "77 Common Beginner Potion Recipes and Brewing Methods" on the bedside table. She had almost worn the book out of print, and she could recite much of its contents by heart.
Unfortunately, she never had enough money to purchase those alchemical materials. If she could return to the academy, she might be able to borrow from the teaching supplies or pick up some scraps that other students didn't want.
However, staying in this small village would not earn them any money, nor would they be able to buy any alchemical materials.
The fighting outside had stopped at some point.
Melissa stormed back into the house, a clear footprint on her left buttock, her clothes and wool stockings stained with mud.
“I’ve had enough. I don’t want to stay here a second longer. Do you want to come with me? Will and I are planning to form our own adventure team. It would be even better if there was a mage in the team.”
The female student shrank back upon hearing this. "I'm not a mage, just an alchemy apprentice, and, and I have to follow my teacher..."
"Alright, then have a good time here." Melissa said, then started packing her luggage.
After a while, Will arrived. He looked hesitant and stood there for a while before speaking, "I think we should discuss forming an adventure team again."
"What do you mean?" Melissa stopped what she was doing.
"I remember you saying before that we are not suited to be adventurers."
"Ha, so you're planning to stay here and cut down trees for the rest of your life?" Melissa said. "Besides, do I need to remind you? The road is finished. Even if you want to cut down trees and dig soil again, you won't get paid. In fact, we haven't had any work for almost forty days. If we don't find something to do, we'll go hungry again once we run out of money. Do you want to go hungry?"
“I don’t want to,” Will muttered, shrinking back. “I know our finances aren’t great, and I’ve been trying to figure things out these days. In fact, Horton and I just found a job repairing fences.”
How much do you get paid for repairing the fence?
"Uh... that poor woman's husband died early, leaving her with only two children, and they didn't have much money."
“Oh, so you’re planning to work for her for free?” Melissa raised her voice. “You’d better have slept with her already, otherwise you’ll just look like a complete idiot, brother. A woman can easily sway you with a couple of tears and a tragic story.”
"Don't be so harsh, Melissa, that family really looks like they need help!"
"Meaningful?! For the past two months while you were bedridden with your broken arm, I was out early and back late every day, chopping trees and digging soil to earn money to support both of us. Everyone can call me mean-spirited, except you, Will, except you! Before you go and repair that poor widow's fence for free, think about what you've done for your mean-spirited sister."
“It wasn’t free,” Will argued in a low voice. “She promised us a small bag of flour and half a bucket of goat’s milk.”
“That little bit of stuff isn’t even enough to fill Horton’s teeth!” Melissa shouted.
Renee huddled in a corner of the room, listening to the siblings' argument. Feeling somewhat embarrassed, she could only try to hold her breath and pretend she didn't exist.
Fortunately, the commotion outside the door quickly drew everyone's attention.
Will and Melissa's argument stopped abruptly, and then the female student heard the half-elf girl's surprised voice.
"He's back! I knew he would come back!"
After saying that, she jumped down the small hill and ran towards the village entrance, her chestnut-brown short hair bobbing and dancing in the sunlight, with the adventurer brother and sister following closely behind.
Not only them, but everyone else in the village also came out of their houses.
Simply because they had never seen such a sight before.
The old alchemist, who had been sunbathing in the open space and looking rather drowsy, suddenly jumped up from his chair and laughed loudly, "I passed the test!"
He paused, then said decisively, "A train, it's definitely a train this time!"
The kobold nearby was grinding its teeth with a lamb leg bone when it saw something in the distance and was so startled that the bone fell out of its mouth.
Renee then peeked out, her mouth agape.
She saw a mobile steel fortress speeding towards her from afar, raising billowing dust that blotted out the sky.
Not intending to stay too long, Ma Li didn't drive to Xia Er's house like last time, but stopped directly at the village entrance.
He jumped out of the driver's seat and tossed the spicy strips and Oreos he had grabbed before leaving the house to the children who gathered around him.
Then he took off his sunglasses and looked at the familiar figure in front of him.
“Sorry I’m late,” Ma Li said, speaking in his still somewhat broken Common Mainland language. “I saw the road you built, well done.”
He wasn't just being polite, because the project was indeed done very well.
Not only were all the trees along the road cut down, but soil was also piled up at the bottom of the steep slope leading out of the canyon so that heavy trucks could easily drive down it.
It's important to know that Xia Er and his team didn't have any machinery; everything was done manually. It must have taken them a lot of time and effort to achieve this level of skill.
Mali's gaze fell on Will and Melissa again; to be honest, the siblings were still a bit unexpected to him.
Ma Li knew that he had been delayed for a while this time, mainly because there were too many things to prepare, and he accidentally went over the deadline.
Will and Melissa's financial situation is also very bad, so it wouldn't be surprising if they left Whitewood Village to find other jobs to earn money first. Mali even considered waiting until Eagle Beak City to find them.
But since everyone is here now, it saves him a lot of trouble.
