Chapter 72 Extinguishing the Storm
Chapter 72 Extinguishing the Storm
Han Shilong has successfully broken the record for the fastest lap time, taking the top spot!
Matteo is singing and dancing – this is exactly the scene he wanted to see, right? How could that baby-faced guy possibly win? Finally, we'll see that guy get his comeuppance. I wonder if that baby-faced guy is frantic right now? His expression under the helmet must be priceless.
It's a pity we can't see it. What a shame.
In fact, if Matteo had seen this, he would probably have been even more disappointed, because Lu Zhizhou's face showed no anxiety or wavering, no extra expression whatsoever. Instead, he was constantly communicating with Borrepeller, needing to grasp the track situation and find a window of opportunity to push for another flying lap.
Traffic jam.
On the less than five-kilometer track, nineteen race cars were crowded together, making it impossible to stretch their legs and even requiring patience to wait for the flying lap.
"Zhizhou, advance. A window appears, advance."
As Lu Zhizhou entered Turn 13, Borrepeller's voice came through the radio: "Keep calm, I've got it."
The vehicle was still in the curve, and Lu Zhizhou had already begun adjusting his braking point control, braking as late as possible to gain more speed out of the curve.
Finally, emerging from Turn 16, with a slight adjustment to the steering wheel and the accelerator floored, the red and black race car shot off like a streak of light, like an arrow released from a bow.
Brendel was analyzing and commenting on Han Shilong's brilliant lap when he caught a glimpse of that flash of light that propelled the speed to its limit in one go.
All that remained was a blurry halo.
Brendel's heart skipped a beat, but he quickly regained his composure. "Wait, let's take a look at Lu's lap first."
Straight road, S-curves with curves one and two, and long arc right curve three.
Lu Zhizhou's driving was light and smooth, with clear early braking and understeer. He relied on dynamic balance to control the rhythm in the corners, and his line was perfect. Although it was a mechanical collision and operation with the engine roaring continuously, it gave people the feeling of ballet shoes dancing softly and elegantly on a steel wire.
First timeout, purple! Fastest in the entire event!
A fraction more would be too much, a fraction less would be insufficient. The entire race car appeared stable and smooth, as if riding the wind. It passed through Turn 4 and then effortlessly drifted with the wind in the following series of corners. It slightly pressed against the curb but avoided any vibration. The car body made minimal corrections and precisely drew the apex line of the corner. It didn't even have time to breathe before it gracefully passed through Turn 9 with minimal slippage.
Sneaked into the night wind, moisten things silently.
That fleeting afterimage, trailing a long tail, enveloped the apex and the curve, gently brushing past, making one involuntarily hold their breath and follow that gleam as they plunged headlong into Turn 10.
Second timeout, purple! Still the fastest in the entire event!
A trickle of water instantly transforms into a torrential downpour; the coordination of the brakes and accelerator, the balance of the steering and the rear of the car, allow it to break through the raging waves.
Downhill combination bends 11 and 12, bend 13, slow S-curves 14 and 15, turbulent waters and storms—the tires' potential was pushed to its limit, yet the car used traction braking to hold the brakes and enter the bend. The rear of the car swayed at its limit, the tires gripped the reins until the last millisecond, and in a dazzling display of speed, there was no time to catch one's breath before the car sped out of bend 16.
The gently swaying car body stabilized with a full throttle, instantly pushing the speed to its limit, and roaring towards the finish line.
Boom boom, boom boom boom—
Full throttle acceleration, time seemed to stand still in the speed and passion, until the data on the display screen refreshed again, the moment transformed into an eternal stillness.
“1, Lu, 1:33.889.”
In the third time slot, I continued to refresh the purple score, achieving the fastest result in the entire event and successfully setting a new record!
The storm had only just begun to brew, but in a single turn, Lu Zhizhou had extinguished all the waves and gales, and order was restored from the chaos.
Everything was calm and peaceful.
Because it happened so fast, Matteo had no time to react and didn't know how to react. He stood there like a puppet, stunned.
"Pole position!"
Borrepeller clenched his fists, his heart pounding, and punched his thigh hard, but he was so startled that he almost jumped up. A surge of passion and boiling blood erupted, not just because of the lap time, but also because of the unexpected surprise Lu Zhizhou had brought in such a short time.
"Zhizhou! Pole position!"
After a brief outburst, Borrepeller regained his composure and repeated the good news to Lu Zhizhou once more.
Somewhat surprisingly, there was no response from Lu Zhizhou over the radio.
Lu Zhizhou was enjoying the exhilarating rush of adrenaline. Street racing had its thrills, but Formula racing, with its pursuit of speed and the ultimate human potential, offered a completely different experience.
A fierce wind swept in, carrying the golden sunlight, while waves of heat surged from all directions, enveloping him completely. He felt like Icarus, adorned with wings made of wax and feathers, soaring towards the sun, immersed in the joy of flight and the sun's brilliance, ecstatic and oblivious to everything else.
Until the sun melts the wings.
Magnificent. Heroic.
My heart pounded wildly, and I could almost hear the sound of my blood boiling in my ears. The sunlight falling on my body turned into streams of flame. The roar of the engine, the cheers of the crowd, and the raging wind were all shattered into streaks of light, transforming into a surging torrent that continued to rush forward.
Then, Lu Zhizhou's voice finally came through the radio—
"Baby, baby, baby, oh..."
Borrepeller was slightly taken aback, his face full of astonishment. He tried to control himself, but obviously, he failed. "Pfft, hahaha. Hahahaha."
Lu Zhizhou said, "Please, Pierre, show us something. Just pretend this is the audition for 'Britain's Got Talent'."
Borrepeller was almost about to start singing, almost, but he supported his head with his hands, looking utterly defeated.
Lu Zhizhou couldn't see Borrepeller's expression. "It's okay, I'll keep trying. The qualifying season isn't over yet, so let's keep an eye on it."
The smile in Borrepeller's eyes burst forth completely.
Not only Borrepeller, but Sky Sports was equally excited. Croft, his face flushed red as if he were drunk, stared wide-eyed at the screen.
"Wonderful!"
"Absolutely brilliant, a perfect lap!"
"Unbelievable! The ART team's rookie completed an incredible lap, setting the fastest time in all three time segments and breaking the previous record."
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is worth noting that we have just witnessed history. The fastest lap time in GP3 history at the Barcelona circuit was set by Kevin Kochows in 2013, at 1 minute 34.193 seconds. For five whole years, no one could surpass it until now, when it was finally broken."
"Lu not only set a new record for the fastest lap time on the track, but also broke the 1 minute 34 second barrier for the first time in history."
Exclamations of praise, endless chatter, and overwhelming joy filled the air. Croft was so overwhelmed with excitement that he lost all control, leaping up and clenching his fists with boundless passion, pushing the frenzy in the paddock to its peak!
One period of chaos ended, but another storm was brewing.
"1:33.899!"
"GP3 broke the 1 minute 34 second barrier for the first time in the history of the Barcelona circuit. The record was set by Lu Zhizhou, a rookie driver from the ART team, who was participating in his first official Formula racing race in his professional career."
