Chapter 7 The Nobles Pay Homage to the Dragon Daughter
Chapter 7 The Nobles Pay Homage to the Dragon Daughter
There are only three days left until the White Walker army arrives at Dragonvale.
In the dense forests along the lower reaches of the Saint River, a search party of lizardmen is looking for traces of missing villagers.
Everyone guessed that it had probably been eaten by an anaconda. These terrifying jungle hunters have a strong sense of territory and are likely still roaming nearby.
Find it, kill it, cut it open, dig out the villagers' corpses before they could turn into snake droppings, and transport them back to the village in a small boat for burial—that's what everyone has been doing for so many years.
Several hours later, following the direction in which the bushes had fallen, the group finally found the anaconda.
The opponent was reduced to a skeleton.
The flesh on the skeleton had been completely removed, but there were no signs of scraping with sharp teeth. The hunters in the group examined it carefully and were surprised to find that the anaconda had actually been dissolved to death.
It was as if someone had taken the digestive juices from its stomach and spread them evenly all over its body.
Such a bizarre and strange way of dying made the search team somewhat uneasy. Some people suggested that since the anaconda had been killed, the victim inside its belly was probably not found. They suggested that they should give up the search and return to the village by the same route.
The shaman in the group rejected the suggestion, arguing that if something could kill the anaconda, they should at least find out what it was, otherwise it would pose a potential threat to the village.
The village chief strongly objected, arguing that it was already late and the jungle in the dark was a hundred times more dangerous than during the day. He suggested they return to the village for the night and come back early the next morning to continue the search.
As the two sides were arguing, strange cries suddenly rang out from the surrounding area.
It sounded like the piercing buzzing of countless cockroaches simultaneously vibrating their elytra.
------------
Ellina went out of the city to capture the White Walkers, while Raine took Dia to Lord Agor's mansion to pay a visit in the name of the Imperial human nobles.
Lord Agor of Dragon Valley City, a chubby lizardman, was currently looking through the business card that Renn had given him.
"The Fahel family?" he turned to the butler and asked, "Nobles of the Human Empire?"
“Yes.” The butler quickly found the information about the Fahr family in a large book. “The Fahr family, whose hereditary territory is Raven Castle in River Bend Province, is an ancient noble family with many descendants. The patriarch is Marquis Fahr.”
"The emblem and handwritten signature on the business card are exactly the same as those recorded in the book."
“Since it is a visit from a human nobleman, he should be given the rights befitting a nobleman as a guest.” Lord Agor quickly made a decision. “Give him a bowl of honey water and then welcome him in.”
The rights of a nobleman's guests meant that once the relationship between host and guest was established, neither party was allowed to harm the other, or they would be cursed by the gods.
This custom is widespread throughout the mainland, but the specific details vary. The lizard people's custom is that the host offers honey water to the guest; the guest drinking it signifies the establishment of a guest-guest relationship. Anyone who violates this relationship will be swallowed by the dragon god, their soul forever tormented by dragon flames.
At the entrance of the mansion, a servant brought over some honey water. Rein took the wooden bowl, sipped it, and then turned to hand it to Dia.
Dia had no idea what kind of etiquette this was, but she still followed suit and drank the rest of the honey water in one go.
The butler, who was secretly observing from the doorway, immediately determined that only Rein was an imperial nobleman, while Dia was clearly a commoner who lacked manners. According to custom, this bowl of honey water was to be shared by the host and guest, so the guest should not drink it all at once, but rather leave half a bowl.
As Raine and Dia entered the main hall of the mansion, Lord Agor, who had been informed by the steward in advance, greeted them with a warm smile.
He bypassed Dia, exchanged names and a few pleasantries with Renn, and then had a servant serve desserts and wine. Dia was already a little nervous, and after being ignored by Agor, she became even more reserved. She could only stand silently behind Renn, not daring to find a chair to sit on, and secretly swallowed her saliva as she stared at the pastries on the plate.
"Your Excellency Agor," after finishing his dessert, Renn finally stated his purpose, "I have come on behalf of the Faher family to introduce you to a distinguished person."
"Please speak," Agor said, gracefully gesturing with his hand.
“I would like to introduce this lady.” Renn gestured for Dia to come forward. “Dia Scarlett, daughter of the true dragon.”
"The daughter of a true dragon?" Agor was immediately amused, but quickly realized his lapse in composure. Fortunately, the lizardmen's expressions weren't easy to discern, so he pretended nothing had happened and explained to Renn:
“Your Excellency Fahre, if you have been deceived by some low-class prostitute or swindler, I can explain it to you here.”
"The Daughter of the True Dragon, in our Lizardmen's belief and legend, is a savior who only appears when the world is about to be destroyed—note, when the world is about to be destroyed."
“Every year, the shamanic group executes more than a dozen fraudsters who claim to be the daughters or sons of the true dragon. Their bodies are still hanging on the racks at the bottom of the Scale Temple. You can still see their dried and stinking corpses now.”
Agor stared at Dia with ill intent, who turned pale with fright, thinking to herself, "I never claimed to be the daughter of a dragon."
All that could be heard was Ryan speaking slowly and deliberately:
“I know this is incredible, Lord Agor. The Daughter of the True Dragon is a religious idol in the Lizardmen’s belief culture, so logically she should also be a Lizardman. How could a human be the Daughter of the True Dragon?”
"I'm sure you're curious about what happened. But that's the truth, and we were very surprised too."
Agor listened with a smile, thinking to himself, "Isn't this just nonsense?"
While rambling on is a traditional skill of nobles in idle chatter, your statement is utterly meaningless. At least tell me where the "evidence that she is the daughter of a dragon" is... Hmm, wait a minute!
Agor suddenly realized the key point: whether this human girl named Dia was actually the daughter of a true dragon was not important.
The important question is, in Dragon Valley City, who should have the final say on whether a woman is the daughter of a true dragon?
Having thought this through, Agor fully understood the other party's subtext, and his gaze toward Renn became complicated, half admiration and half fear.
He didn't hesitate for long, quickly rising from the armchair and kneeling before Dia, placing one hand on his chest as he said:
“I am Agor Salichye, and my family has ruled Dragon Valley City for generations. I now offer you my loyalty and respect, great daughter of the true dragon.”
Daiya was completely dumbfounded and at a loss for what to do.
She looked at Ryan for help, but Ryan just smiled and made a gesture of raising his hands.
"Please get up." Dia had no choice but to bite the bullet and go over to help Agor up.
Before she could even touch his arm, Agor sprang to his feet, brushed the dust off the hem of his clothes, and said with a serious expression:
"Daughter of the True Dragon, it is a great honor for us to have you grace Dragon Valley City with your presence. I will inform all the nobles in the city to come and pay their respects."
“Ah, this…” Dia stammered, but Renn interrupted her:
“That is only natural. Thank you for your trouble, Your Excellency Salicheye.”
“It is my honor, Lord Faher,” Agor grinned. “And thank you for bringing the Dragon Daughter to our side.”
