Chapter 131 Plot
Chapter 131 Plot
"You haven't eaten yet?"
When Lin Ze walked out of his room, deep in thought, the night outside the window was already a vast expanse of darkness, and the lights of every household on the street were lit up.
He looked at Kitagawa Ayane, who was lying on the sofa with her phone in her hand, and saw that the bento box on the table was still unopened. He asked her in surprise.
"I...I'm not that hungry yet." Kitagawa Ayane put her phone aside, her beautiful eyes fixed on Lin Ze.
She waited for a long time, and was naturally very happy to see the other person come out.
"Then let's heat it up in the microwave and eat it together."
Lin Ze picked up both bento boxes and prepared to go to the kitchen. He had eaten a full lunch and only now did he feel a little hungry, but it was already past seven o'clock in the evening.
A day passes so quickly, and he only managed to do a few things, yet more than ten hours have already slipped away.
This is why Lin Ze must work hard, because with the countdown, he is becoming increasingly sensitive to time.
If he simply enjoys dinner as usual, instead of rushing to catch up on things he's been putting off before doing anything else, he won't be able to lie down peacefully in bed until late at night, and even if he does lie down, he still won't be able to close his eyes.
Deep down, he felt there were so many things to do. While addressing his illness was the most pressing matter, his studies couldn't be neglected. Lin Ze had to pretend to be perfectly normal, mostly ignoring the fact that he was a patient. Otherwise, while striving for a bright future, he could easily feel lost and confused.
That kind of bewilderment comes from the feeling that everything is uncertain. How can one concentrate on learning medical knowledge and pursuing endless progress when life could be completely destroyed?
Fortunately, he was Lin Ze.
Often, the strong heart hidden in his chest made him believe in only one possibility: that he could cure his illness and that everything he did was meaningful.
He must be absolutely determined about this.
A short while later, in front of the coffee table.
Lin Ze and Kitagawa Ayane sat together for a meal, using the exact same posture.
The scene was quiet and warm.
The spoon was repeatedly fed into the mouth.
Lin Ze watched Kitagawa Ayane eat obediently and felt that her cheeks were much rosier than when he first met her. Because he had seen Kitagawa Ayane's initial state, he could obviously tell the difference.
The gleam in those eyes couldn't be faked.
I remember when we first met, Ayane Kitagawa was pale and haggard. She looked lifeless and showed no hope for life. She was clearly so fragile that she would lose all hope for life if she suffered another setback.
In just three months, the senior student's eyes regained their light.
Health is something so ordinary, yet it's something everyone dreams of.
Lin Ze felt a pang of emotion, and his tone softened considerably as he spoke: "I plan to go to the University of Tokyo tonight."
Kitagawa Ayane paused for a moment, then swallowed what she was chewing.
"Are we going later?"
"Yes, I have some questions I'd like to ask my senior. I just messaged her and we arranged to go to the medical school's lab later."
While Lin Ze was racking his brains searching for Professor Hammer's information in his bedroom, he still hadn't found a way to read the papers. However, he discovered another particularly important piece of information.
In the Alzheimer's targeted drug research led by Keito Hishida in previous years, a considerable number of foreign professors were invited to collaborate. Although they could not participate in the research, they at least provided relevant assistance.
This means that Dr. Shimazu Kazune, who was the first assistant, was likely aware of Professor Hammer. Of course, it would be even better if she were willing to provide internal research papers.
As an intern, Lin Ze had not participated in any large-scale research, but Shimazu Kazune was a rising star in the field of pharmacology, and her internal access must have been very high.
"Stay home for a while, I should be back soon." Lin Ze thought it would take more than an hour to cycle back and forth.
Kitagawa Ayane glanced at the bedroom, and the thought of staying at home without Lin Ze made her feel inexplicably uncomfortable.
So she asked, "Can I come along?"
Lin Ze paused in his action of holding the spoon, raised his eyes and said calmly, "You can't enter the lab because you're not even a medical student. I have no reason to take you there, and my senior sister would mind too."
"I don't want to go into the lab. I can take a walk around the school. Please let me go." Kitagawa Ayane's tone was more pleading.
However, this requirement made Lin Ze frown.
It's fine if she doesn't go into the lab; it's good to let Kitagawa-senpai have fun on her own at school.
However, the senior's behavior was a bit too clingy.
She's not Thumbelina, someone you can just toss around in your pocket and go anywhere. After all, she's a grown woman in her twenties.
It seems that Ayane Kitagawa's subjectivity has been further replaced.
Lin Ze suppressed his concerns and could only agree for the time being.
"Okay, we'll ride our bikes there after dinner."
Everything has its advantages and disadvantages, and the fact that the senior's dependence on him has become even greater is probably one of the disadvantages.
Lin Ze put the delicious grilled fish into his mouth and pondered as he chewed.
……
The temperature dropped even more noticeably at night, and Lin Ze had to wrap his coat tightly around himself while riding his bicycle. Kitagawa Ayane's hands would get cold from hugging him around the waist, so she kept them in his pocket the whole time. Because she was holding them so tightly, her hands were sweaty when she took them out of her pocket after arriving at school.
The campus of the University of Tokyo was sparsely populated, with only the occasional senior student or teacher passing by.
When Lin Ze arrived at the laboratory building where Shimazu Kazune was, he turned to Kitagawa Ayane and said, "I'll send you a message when I come out. Don't go too far."
“Okay, go ahead.” Kitagawa Ayane nodded, standing still.
If you said the two weren't a couple in a relationship, probably no one would believe it. It's no wonder that Miyagi Suzuo misunderstood, because their behavior was indeed too intimate.
She watched as Lin Ze walked into the teaching building and disappeared.
Kitagawa Ayane waited in place for a moment, then decided that since she was bored anyway, she might as well go to the equipment room for a while, which would probably be very quiet on such a night.
She has never been there at night.
Meanwhile, on Lin Ze's side...
He knocked on the lab door, opened it, and went inside with practiced ease. After habitually closing the door behind him, Lin Ze put on shoe covers.
The laboratory was filled with the humming of medical equipment, and everything looked so serious and tidy.
Hearing the sound, Shimazu Kazune, dressed in a white lab coat, didn't even look up, focusing intently on the objects under the microscope. She kept changing different petri dishes.
Whenever Lin Ze saw his senior sister doing research so seriously, he would feel from the bottom of his heart that a person's charm really comes from all aspects.
Compared to her superficial physical beauty, his senior sister's aura, overflowing with knowledge and displaying an air of erudition and wisdom, was far more pleasing to him. He stood to the side.
Lin Ze carefully pulled over a round stool, sat down backwards, and watched quietly without disturbing his senior sister's research, resting his cheek on his hand.
A moment later, Shimazu Kazune recorded the data and organized it.
She still wore her hair in a high ponytail and light gold half-rimmed glasses.
"what's up?"
Shimazu Kazune's voice, which was by no means enthusiastic, rang out. Without looking up at Lin Ze, she kept her head down writing data samples.
Last time she came, she treated Lin Ze very well, but this time her attitude changed drastically.
Lin Ze knew the reason, so he blinked and wasn't surprised.
He never comes to his senior sister when he doesn't need help. He doesn't even bother to send a message to check on her, let alone maintain a daily relationship. It's not that he lacks emotional intelligence; he just genuinely forgets.
Humans have an unavoidable weakness; he only thinks of his reliable senior sister in times like these, and over time, he can easily become unforgivable in her eyes.
"I've been thinking about how long it's been since I last visited my senior sister, and I miss her a bit. It's already so late, and she's still working hard on pharmacology. She truly deserves to be my idol," Lin Ze said with a smile and a gentle tone.
next second.
He saw Shimazu Kazune shudder, as if she had goosebumps all over her body.
"If you keep talking like that, I'm going to kick you out."
"Okay, I do have something to do."
"Then why bother with that pretense? I guessed it the moment you sent the message."
“It’s not hypocrisy; every word I said was a sincere compliment.”
"Really? You haven't been here for so long, I thought you had already found a place to belong in a place like the affiliated hospital, with other teachers and friends, and no longer needed to come to this deserted laboratory."
"Nobody cares... That's not a good way to describe it. After all, my senior is a pillar of the medical school at the University of Tokyo."
Lin Ze felt a tightness in his throat.
The pressure his senior sister put on him today was greater than ever before.
Logically speaking, the two had a very good relationship, and Lin Ze trusted Shimazu Kazune completely.
However, his senior sister was his first mentor on his medical journey, and his only guide at the time.
This led him to have a degree of respect and fear towards him.
"Heh." Shimazu Kazune raised her cheek, revealing a cold glint behind her glasses.
Clearly, they were very dissatisfied with his behavior of only appearing when there was trouble and disappearing when there was none.
Lin Ze, holding onto the table next to him, pulled the chair he was sitting on closer to his senior sister and cut straight to the point: "To be honest, senior sister, I do have some questions I'd like to ask you. You should know Professor Hammer of Yale University, right? He published an article about neurotransmitters five years ago and also participated in Master's research on targeted drugs for Alzheimer's disease."
“Professor Hammill? That name does sound familiar.” Shimazu Kazune frowned, a thoughtful look in her eyes.
"I'd like to see his earlier papers, or do you have his email address, senior?"
"what are you up to?"
“I have some questions about this recently, but unfortunately I don’t have the authority to access certain papers, so…” Lin Ze charmed Shimazu Kazune, his tone more ingratiating than he had ever been with Miyagi Suzuo or Kitagawa Ayane before: “Only my senior sister can help me.”
Shimazu-senpai gave him a knowing look, looking at him calmly without saying a word.
"In addition, Professor Hammier is currently leading research on a single-control large model, but it is not open to the public yet. I would like to know the progress."
However, after listening, Shimazu Kazune continued to do her own thing with her head down, seemingly uninterested.
"Viewing any professor-level confidential paper through the ASA Medical Research internal website will leave a record, and specific and credible materials must be provided when applying. It will only be opened after being reviewed by the administrator. It is not something that you can just look at whenever you want."
"So, can I apply for the same permissions as my senior?"
“Sure, but what reason can I give for applying?” Shimazu Kazune glanced at him, took off her gloves, rinsed and disinfected them, then put on another pair of gloves and picked up the scalpel on the tray: “My junior colleague is an intern at an affiliated hospital who is inexplicably interested in Professor Hammill’s classified thesis, so I’m applying for this. Do you think the administrator will approve this reason?”
"Of course you can't say that. Perhaps you could use it as a reference for project research materials?"
When Shimazu Kazune heard Lin Ze's question, she couldn't help but chuckle, covering her mouth and asking softly, "What projects do you have?"
“There are research projects related to behavioral logic, cognitive impairment, and brain memory,” Lin Ze shrugged.
"Really? When did our medical school approve it? How come I didn't know?"
"Personal project".
"So you're a self-taught medical researcher, junior brother. My apologies." Shimazu Kazune turned around and took a small white mouse out of the transparent animal enclosure, teasingly.
"This is very important to me, senior sister. If you can help me, I will definitely remember your kindness."
“Okay,” Shimazu Kazune nodded, then changed the subject, “as long as we get Master’s permission.”
"We can't let Master know, he won't agree."
Lin Ze shook his head.
His unauthorized treatment of Kitagawa Ayane was a serious violation of discipline, which is why it has been kept secret until now. Moreover, there is no good treatment available worldwide for this kind of mental disorder.
Lin Ze possesses this astonishing healing system, and there's no way he could let anyone doubt it.
Things come true in secret.
This is a secret that must be buried in my heart and never spoken.
Even when he came to find Shimazu Kazune, it was out of his trust in his senior sister.
"Then why not? Would a great professor stop a student who seeks knowledge? Or perhaps..." Shimazu Kazune's white mouse squeaked, sounding particularly jarring, and she said calmly, "You have other motives?"
She continued her questioning, her gaze sharp: "Don't tell me you still haven't given up on treating that so-called mental patient? You've even come to me for it. I warned you not to get involved in things that don't concern you, because ruining your future is a very ignorant act."
Lin Ze seemed to have anticipated his senior sister's attitude, which was half sharp and half disappointed.
He made no excuses.
The laboratory fell silent for a moment, and the atmosphere became somewhat oppressive.
