Chapter 3 You know nothing about the world
The next day, Logan, feeling refreshed, went to his unremarkable little newspaper office without any apparent change in his demeanor.
He had just greeted Richard when Donald burst through the door like a brown bear, panting heavily, his face flushed with excitement.
"Guess what I stumbled upon yesterday, guys?"
No one knew better than Logan, who slowly sat down behind his desk. "Have you seen a ghost?"
"Ha!" Donald scoffed dismissively, then poured out his extraordinary encounter from the previous night. "That was a god! I stumbled upon a true god hidden among mortals!"
"With a wave of his hand, he conjured up a pile of wine." His chest heaved violently as he gestured excitedly with his hands. "That's dark magic passed down for billions of years, meant to overthrow the dark god of this world."
Logan's brow twitched. "I never said that."
"God said that I am the chosen one favored by divine power, destined to defeat the Italians and unify the underworld!"
Logan's brow twitched again. It seemed, perhaps, that wasn't what I was saying either.
"Guys, cheer! The O'Connor family is about to soar to new heights!"
"..."
Logan and Richard were silent for a second, then burst into laughter.
Logan was alright; he was mentally prepared and just laughed heartily.
Richard was laughing so hard he was practically lying on the table, almost choking on his own laughter: "You? The chosen one? Tang, you must have drunk too much last night, and your brain must have been gnawed through by a sewer rat, otherwise you wouldn't be spouting such drunken nonsense."
"You know nothing!" Donald's face turned from red to green, then from green to a deep purplish-red. "I'm perfectly clear-headed!"
“That power…” He took a deep breath, as if drawing on the mysterious energy of the universe, “is an extraordinary ability that only a true god can master.”
"If you saw it with your own eyes, you would believe without hesitation that God exists in the world."
Logan had a sudden thought; he felt this was an opportunity to find out how accepting Americans were of his madness.
Logan stopped laughing and asked tentatively, "It sounds like you saw a magician perform magic?"
Richard wiped away the tears of laughter. "I think he's possessed, and quite severely."
"Absolutely not! Possessed!" Donald practically roared, spitting as he spoke. "That's just wine conjuring up out of thin air! Tell me, what kind of cult charlatan could do that!"
"Did you really conjure up wine?" Richard's attitude became a little more serious.
"Why would I lie to you!" Donal slammed his hand on the table. "It's 100% real, and it's still on sale!"
"I can have as many as I want from now on; with just this one change, I'll have them!"
"This is the O'Connor family's destiny! Destiny! Do you understand?!"
Richard and Logan looked at each other in bewilderment.
The former thought Donald's claims were incredibly far-fetched, but since they had alcohol to sell, they couldn't be lying, so... they had run into a very cunning conman.
The latter then realized, "Holy crap, you actually believed it all!"
He's just making things up based on the random plots of Hollywood movies he's seen, and you really don't have any doubts at all!
Where is historical materialism? Where is Marx?
Oh, I forgot this is America, a country with a strong religious atmosphere.
It is a country where evolution is denied in many places in the 21st century.
That seems reasonable.
In particular, Donald is not well-educated.
Well, even if "Han Solo" doesn't try his best to fool people, this guy will probably automatically associate it with gods and ghosts.
Since they were related, Logan decided to try and see if he could save the day. "Maybe it's some kind of high technology you don't understand? Like an African native seeing airplanes and cannons."
—Anyway, he simply held onto the rabbit family's simple materialistic view of cheat systems.
"The concept of destiny is even more absurd. If you read a lot of history, you'll know that charlatans from all over the world seem to be using this kind of nonsense to fool people."
Richard wholeheartedly agreed, “Tang, I’ve advised you before to read more books. Look at you, you’re so easily fooled by charlatans that your mind is completely muddled.”
Donald's forehead veins throbbed as he angrily shouted, "You know nothing about the real world!"
"..."
Logan felt that the sentence sounded strangely familiar.
That's it, this guy is beyond saving.
What could Logan do? Of course, he had to appease this guy. "Alright, alright, you understand this world. Come on, help me check if his novel is up to standard?"
"How would I know if I'll pass or not?" Donald retorted curtly, his anger still simmering.
Richard laughed again, "You're not well-educated. If you can understand this, most people can understand it too. I'll pass then."
Gan!
Donald was so angry that he turned around and was about to slam the door and leave.
“Just kidding, Don, it’s true, we need your help.” Logan suppressed a laugh and quickly called out to him.
They really need Donald's help.
Logan read Richard's previous erotic novels and discovered a major problem: a certain level of cultural literacy was required to understand their subtleties.
This is the enemy of popular fiction! So Logan's requirements for Richard were very simple: anyone who could read should be able to easily understand his novels.
Doesn't that require Donald to oversee the process?
Donald, out of respect for his younger cousin, stopped, glared at the smiling Richard, and angrily picked up the first draft in front of him.
The first draft wasn't long, and Donald finished reading it in no time.
"How is it?" Logan asked.
Donald thought for a moment and admitted, "I understand the story, but I don't understand the... weird games in it."
After listening, Richard immediately shrugged: "You can't blame me for that. I don't understand those weird... games either."
So, what exactly is the novel or the game?
Logan asked Richard to write a very meaningful erotic novel for the 21st century.
There's a bit of love involved, but a lot of action!
Because a girl I was dating at the time was really into this series, Logan was forced to read it as well, and its profound meaning left a deep impression on him.
What? You're saying it's just a melodramatic love story, with no substance whatsoever?
Tell me, have those weird and sadomasochistic games increased your knowledge and broadened your horizons?
Doesn't that have a profound meaning?
Richard, however, simply couldn't capture that kind of depth.
"Well, actually I don't know much about that either."
Logan gave the two of them a brief explanation of the relevant information.
From game items to gameplay...
"Stop, stop for a second." Logan wanted to continue introducing even more exciting moves, but Richard stopped him with a gesture. "Give me some time to process this."
Richard, who always considered himself to have a wealth of knowledge about lovemaking, felt like his brain was about to explode.
You call that "not knowing much"?
How can someone who knows so much further surpass my imagination?
Both he and Donald instinctively moved away from Logan.
"You... are all college students these days this adventurous?"
"Uh..." Most of Logan's strange knowledge actually comes from the original work.
Moreover, having lived in an era of information overload, one has at least seen the latest developments in some forward-thinking games, even if one hasn't personally experienced them.
But none of this could explain it. After a moment's thought, Logan decided to let American University's reputation continue to suffer.
"I don't have that kind of special hobby, but university is indeed a place full of knowledge. If you are willing, you can always learn a lot of strange and wonderful things."
Richard and Donald exchanged a glance, still deeply suspicious of Logan's quirks, but dared not think any further.
Thinking too much about it makes me feel like I could revive Logan's father from the ashes.
Logan, unaware that his image in their eyes had completely collapsed, continued to offer advice:
"I can only speak generally on this. If you want to write about the details, you really need to find some places that offer this kind of game and observe the scene in person."
Richard covered his face. "Watch it live? How can Chicago have such a perverted place?"
Logan chuckled, glancing only at Donald, "Really not?"
Donal hesitated for a moment, then honestly replied, "There should be some. I'll ask someone in the gang to help me find out."
Logan nodded in satisfaction.
I knew it was impossible not to have!
S&M didn't just suddenly appear in the 21st century; it has a long history. Chicago is a major international metropolis now, it would be a miracle if it didn't exist!
Logan also thoughtfully advised Donald, "Make sure to find a club with a male-female pairing theme, not a male-male pairing theme, as it's not good for Richard's mental and physical health."
Richard's face turned pale; he was almost fainting. "You even know anything about men's sex?"
“How rare!” Logan shrugged. “These will become more and more common in America in the future.”
"They might even become the mainstream group!"
"Stop! Stop talking!" Richard felt he was still too conservative and couldn't keep up with the depth of the young people's thinking.
He gritted his teeth and said, "If America becomes like this in the future, it would be better for the country to perish!"
Donald nodded silently.
Logan looked at the two of them with pity.
If you knew that a hundred years from now, there would be 97 genders in America, and that LGBTQ+ would be very popular, what would you think?
He felt that something Donald said earlier made a lot of sense.
You guys are lucky to know nothing about the real world.
Richard and Donald felt a chill run down their spines under Logan's gaze!
……
Logan is a psychopath; I knew that a long time ago.
