Chapter 183 The Capital Falls, the Mini Civil War Is No Longer Minimal
Chapter 183 The Capital Falls, the Mini Civil War Is No Longer Minimal (Bonus Chapter 1326)
Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, was also in a state of panic.
Inside the governor's mansion, the governor's phone was almost constantly ringing.
While he was desperately pleading with the federal government in Washington to send regular troops to quell the “armed rebellion”, he was also yelling at the military command lines within the state, trying to mobilize all available forces.
"Build a defensive line! We must build a defensive line outside the city! What do we need? Reinforcements? Where the hell are we going to get reinforcements?!" the governor roared into the phone, his voice hoarse with despair.
The actual situation was even worse than the governor's voice.
Mississippi is not a major military state, and its standing National Guard force is only the size of an infantry regiment.
For this raid, which was intended to be a "one-and-done" operation, Colonel Morris took almost all of the regiment's elite personnel and best equipment.
Today, only a few new recruits responsible for logistics and communications, and a small number of garrison troops responsible for daily guard duties and lacking combat experience remain in Jackson and its surrounding areas.
Adding the state police force, which seems numerous, they are already struggling to maintain order and suppress looting in the riot-ridden city. Organizing an effective field defense is simply a pipe dream.
“Governor, we have tried to set up roadblocks on the main highways in the north of the city, but we are severely understaffed, and many of the conscripted soldiers… their families are fleeing, and morale is extremely low!”
The frontline commander's report came through the phone, his voice almost choked with tears.
"Useless! All of you are useless!" The governor slammed down the phone in anger, his hands on the table, panting heavily.
Just as the governor was in a state of panic, even more devastating news arrived—the army of "Black Sherman" had completely ignored the other towns along the way and was heading straight for Jackson!
"They're here! They're coming for Jackson!"
Panic swept through the already crumbling city defense forces like a tsunami.
"Don't stop! If you see any concentrated troops or roadblocks, break through them! Overwhelm them with speed! Disrupt all their plans!"
Leo stood in the back of a captured military truck, which was equipped with a Hotchkiss heavy machine gun, waving and shouting to the long convoy behind him.
Under his orders, truck after truck, and even civilian cars "requisitioned" from the road, formed a chaotic yet incredibly fast motor convoy that sped along the highway into Jackson without any pause!
The swarming armed convoys turned this not-so-large capital city upside down.
When they encountered scattered state police roadblocks or National Guard squads attempting to assemble, the heavy machine guns on the vehicles spat out half-meter-long jets of fire, tearing the temporary roadblocks, fortifications, and personnel behind them to shreds.
If the resistance fighters used buildings as cover for firing, the soldiers on the vehicle would never get off; they would simply throw in a few hissing, white-smoking grenades through the windows.
When faced with tough nuts to crack—heavy machine guns and grenades—Leo's troops never lingered, continuing their advance without stopping, leaving these obstacles for the following detachments armed with mortars to "treat."
Fast, too fast!
This highly mobile and heavily armed "lightning" assault completely stunned the remaining National Guard and state police forces in the city!
Their communications were almost completely cut off, and they were utterly unable to mount any effective resistance against these black soldiers who seemed to have descended from the heavens like demons.
Hearing the deafening explosions and the ever-approaching roar of engines, the will of many defenders crumbled instantly.
"We can't hold on! Run!"
Someone shouted first, as if toppling the first domino.
Soldiers and police officers abandoned their weapons, some even hastily removing their conspicuous military or police uniforms, turning around and mingling with the fleeing civilians, desperately running in the opposite direction from the sound of gunfire and explosions.
The governor was also stunned by the increasingly close and intense explosions and gunfire.
“Hold on! We have to hold on!” He waved his arms, his face flushed, trying to make a final plea. “I won’t run! I’d rather die than run! Go! Organize all the KKK in the city! Give them weapons…” However, his loyal guard captain interrupted him, his face pale. “Governor! It’s no use! All the white people in the city are fleeing for their lives, nobody’s following orders!”
"Even...even many of the congressmen have already gotten into their cars and fled! Hurry and escape! If you don't escape now, it will really be too late! You can't become a prisoner of black people!"
"The...the councilors have all run away?" The governor froze on the spot, as if he had been doused with a bucket of ice water.
He stood there stunned for a few seconds, then tears finally streamed uncontrollably down his cheeks as he murmured, "How could... how could things have turned out like this?!"
He did not insist any further. Surrounded by guards, the top executive of Mississippi, like most of the fleeing soldiers and civilians, hastily fled from the other side of the city.
"Everyone in the police station has run away! The gates are wide open!"
"The state capitol building is undefended! Repeat, completely empty!"
"City Hall! We've taken over City Hall!"
As battle reports reached Leo's ears, even he found it hard to believe.
His initial plan was merely to take advantage of the momentum of victory to launch a bold armed show of force, to storm the outskirts of the state capital, and to create a greater psychological shock.
He never imagined that things would go so smoothly, almost like a child's play, that they would be on the verge of capturing a state capital!
Should we take over the capital?
This was completely unplanned and could even bring unforeseen and enormous political and military risks.
However, looking at the city that was almost within his grasp, Leo hesitated for less than a second.
Take it!
Or rather, with the war having progressed to this point, the relentless march of progress left him with no choice but to brake.
Occupying this place will be an unprecedented and iconic event that will shake the entire United States and even the world!
At the highest point of the city hall, a black flag was quickly raised—in such a hasty situation, where would they have any official flag? Leo had someone find a large piece of black cloth, cut it simply, and use it as the background color to symbolize their resistance and strength that originated from the darkness!
All of this was observed by the Sun's plane.
The pilot immediately flew over the news van that Jackson had followed, and relayed the shocking news back.
When Logan received the news, he was dumbfounded. "What did you say? Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, has basically fallen?!"
He grabbed the communicator and almost shouted as he confirmed with the people on the plane again.
The response was still affirmative, and the journalist on the plane added details about the mass exodus from the city and the control of key locations by Black soldiers.
Logan's face was filled with a bewildered expression that said, "This world is crazy."
Holy crap! How did all this happen?!
You're the capital of a state, not some public toilet you can come and go as you please! How could you just fall like that?
He took several deep breaths, sat back down at his post, and in a slow, heavy tone, announced this earth-shattering news to all the listeners still tuned in to the Voice of Freedom:
"Listeners, I now have a piece of news that may change the course of this country's history."
"According to the latest news repeatedly confirmed by our Sun News reconnaissance aircraft, Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, has fallen!"
"I must admit, I was wrong, terribly wrong!"
"This 'mini' civil war is anything but mini!"
