Chapter 2 Did we win?
Looking at the dark and dirty Chen Xiaomiao in front of him, Lu Yuan really couldn't match her with the little girl with curved eyebrows and eyes in the photo.

He pointed towards the bathroom: "Go wash up first, and we'll talk after you're clean."

Chen Xiaomiao immediately hugged herself tightly, wary: "Why do you want me to take a bath?"

"Why are you asking so many questions! There will be food after you take a shower."

"There's food? Great!"

Upon hearing that there was food, Chen Xiaomiao's initial wariness was instantly crushed by her appetite, and she nodded hastily.

Lu Yuan led her to the bathroom and turned on the shower.

The warm water sprayed out, startling Chen Xiaomiao so much that she let out a scream and jumped back, staring at the "iron pipe that sprayed water" as if facing a formidable enemy.

Lu Yuan patiently taught her how to turn on and off the hot and cold water, and then gave her a bottle of shower gel and shampoo.

"This stuff is scented soap, and this stuff is shampoo. Do you know how to use them?"

"Hey, why does the pancreas look like this..."

"Don't worry about what it looks like, just put it on your body and head, try it first!"

"oh oh……"

Chen Xiaomiao carefully squeezed out a little bit and applied it to her arm, rubbing it to create a lot of bubbles. She stared wide-eyed in amazement.

"Huh? This soap has so much foam, and it smells so good! It even smells like... wildflowers on the mountain."

Once he was sure she could figure it out herself, Lu Yuan stepped out and closed the frosted glass door behind him.

He then went to his mother's empty bedroom, found a loose-fitting sports short-sleeved shirt and shorts, and placed it by the bathroom door.

"Change into this after you shower, you smell too bad."

Through the door, the sound of rushing water and Chen Xiaomiao's occasional soft gasps of surprise as she was scalded by the hot water could be heard, mixed with her novelty and wonder at the "fragrant soap".

Lu Yuan shook his head, took out the black and white photo again, and traced the three words "Chen Xiaomiao" with his fingertip.

After a while, the sound of water stopped.

The frosted glass door was pulled open a crack, and a wet, pale arm reached out, groping and quickly pulling the pile of clothes by the door inside.

A few minutes later, the bathroom door was finally pushed open completely.

Lu Yuan subconsciously looked up.

The girl was wearing a gray tracksuit that was clearly a size too big, with the pant legs and cuffs rolled up several times. Her wet black hair clung haphazardly to her cheeks and neck, still dripping water.

After washing away the mud and grime from her face, a delicate and pretty face was revealed.

Although she was sallow due to malnutrition, thin with a pointed chin and little flesh on her cheeks, her eyebrows and eyes were almost identical to those of the twelve or thirteen-year-old girl in the photo, only she had lost her childishness.

What's most captivating are those eyes, with slightly upturned corners, like a startled little fox in a mountain stream, gazing at you with watery eyes, naturally exuding a timid yet alluring charm.

No wonder that scoundrel got lustful; he probably sensed something was up his mind...

In 1935, the 24th year of the Republic of China... she was probably thirteen years old when the photo was taken, and she is eighteen now, so the timeline matches up.

The last bit of doubt in Lu Yuan's heart vanished.

"Ding dong!"

The doorbell rang at just the right moment; the takeout had arrived.

"Come and eat."

Lu Yuan was worried that Chen Xiaomiao's stomach would be upset from being hungry for too long, so he only ordered congee and vegetarian buns.

When the food was placed on the table, Chen Xiaomiao's eyes widened, her throat bobbed, and she cautiously looked at Lu Yuan.

"Eat."

Lu Yuan nodded.

With permission granted, Chen Xiaomiao immediately rushed to the table, ignoring the heat, grabbed a steamed bun and stuffed it into her mouth.

Her cheeks were stuffed full, and she choked until her eyes rolled back, but she didn't want to stop. When she really couldn't swallow, she quickly gulped down a big mouthful of porridge to help her swallow.

No wonder, after all, she almost starved to death... Lu Yuan waited until she slowed down her wolfing down her food a little before casually asking, "You're wearing a Taoist robe, did you live in a Taoist temple before?"

"Uh-huh!"

With a steamed bun stuffed in her mouth, Chen Xiaomiao nodded indistinctly, "Our temple is called Qizhen Temple, and there are five of us."

Aside from my master and me, the other three were people who came to the temple to escape disaster and revenge because of the chaos of the times. My master took them in, but fearing they would cause trouble, he gave them the same name as me.

Lu Yuan asked again, "Where are they?"

Chen Xiaomiao slowed down her chewing and her eyes dimmed: "That year, when the Japanese invaded the Central Plains, the Taoist temple took in many wounded soldiers and villagers who had nowhere to go."

The three of them were so enraged by the atrocities committed by the Japanese that their eyes turned red with rage. They insisted on going down the mountain with the wounded soldiers to fight the Japanese. Later, someone sent a letter saying that Brother Gu and Sister Zhi had both died at the hands of the Japanese, and only Brother Shu had gone to the west..."

Lu Yuan continued, "And you, how did you end up among the disaster victims?"

"Six months ago, some bastard led the Japanese to our Taoist temple, saying that we were harboring wounded soldiers. My master led me to run away with the fleeing villagers, thinking of going to the west to find Brother Xiaoshu."

But the master is over ninety years old, he couldn't hold on on the way, he's starving... I'm the only one left..."

As Chen Xiaomiao spoke, she frantically stuffed steamed buns into her mouth, as if that would stop the surge of sadness.

"Condolences."

Lu Yuan sighed softly and said nothing more.

Chen Xiaomiao kept eating in silence until she swallowed the last bun, drank the porridge in the bowl clean, and even licked the bottom of the bowl clean.

She looked up at the clean table in front of Lu Yuan, her face flushed red, and she became uneasy.

"Excuse me, I've already eaten all the food... You are truly a great benefactor! May the patriarchs above grant you boundless blessings through your kindness..."

She clasped her hands together in a respectful gesture, recited a few auspicious Taoist sayings in a serious manner, and looked sincere yet slightly ingratiating.

"It's okay, I'm not hungry."

Lu Yuan waved his hand, looked at Chen Xiaomiao's clear yet slightly foxy eyes, took a deep breath, and his expression became serious.

"Now that you've eaten, I have something to tell you, so be prepared."

Chen Xiaomiao was intimidated by Lu Yuan's imposing manner, her heart jumped into her throat, her small hands nervously clutching her overly long sweatpants, and she nodded timidly.

“You…you say it.”

“It’s 2025 now. More than 80 years have passed since you fell into the well. This is not Yuzhou, but the capital, which was Beiping at that time.”

Lu Yuan tried to soften his tone: "Don't you Taoists have a story about Rotten Axe Handle? Your current experience is just like his."

"What?!"

Chen Xiaomiao's foxy eyes widened, her chopsticks fell to the table with a "clatter," her gaze was fixed, her mouth was slightly open, and her mind was blank.

It took a full ten minutes for her brain, which had been in a malfunction, to finally restart.

"I...he..."

She had a million questions she wanted to ask Lu Yuan, but after hesitating for a long time, she finally voiced the question that came to her mind.

"You say it's eighty years in the future? Then let me ask you, are all the Japanese devils dead? Did we win?"

Looking at the almost overflowing anticipation and fear in her eyes, Lu Yuan nodded heavily, his voice clear and firm.

"Won!"

Chen Xiaomiao's lips trembled, and her expression went from extreme tension to bewilderment, and then to unbelievable ecstasy.

next second.

"Whoa-!"

She began to wail and cry, her sobs heart-wrenching, her shoulders shaking violently.

"We won...we really won...Master's divination before he died wasn't wrong! He said we would definitely win! We would definitely win—!"

She cried and shouted, venting all the fear, grievances and despair from eighty years ago.
